Bakersfield Chamber President/CEO stepping down COURTESY OF THE GREATER BAKERSFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ebbie Moreno, President/CEO of The Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce announced recently that she will soon be retiring from her position as head of the 1300-plus member business organization to devote more time to family and friends. In addition she plans to remain close to the Chamber and non profit community, facilitating board retreats, assisting through leadership transitions, and providing business training, all in a consultant capacity. Moreno has been with the Chamber for the past 22 years, serving first as Vice President of Operations before being offered the position of President/CEO eight years ago, in 2004. The Bakersfield Chamber is one of the largest and most well respected local Chambers of Commerce in the state. The Chamber is considered one of strongest in the legislative arena in both the State of California and nationally, with Moreno serving in leadership rolls in both. She has served representing the interests of business with government with the California Chamber of Commerce, including serving

two years as a member of the California Chamber Board of Directors, where she represented all local Chambers in California on that board. In addition she has represented the Chamber and business community on the US Chamber of Commerce Com-

mittee of 100 since 2004. The Committee is made up of CEO's from both local and state chambers that the US Chamber considers the most active and engaged in public policy on behalf of business and our economy. Moreno also served multiple leader-

ship roles in professional development in the Chamber industry on state and national boards and serving in our community on numerous non profit and business boards. The Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce is a private, membership based business association whose core objective is to create and maintain a strong local economy through promoting our community, providing business education and networking opportunities, representing the interests of business with government and engaging in economic development and political action. “We want to thank Debbie for her many years of service to our Chamber and the Chamber industry,” stated Chairman of the Board Tim Terrio, of Terrio Therapy & Fitness. “And while the board has regretfully accepted her decision to retire, we understand and applaud this opportunity for Debbie to move into the next phase of her life.” The Chamber Executive Board has put together a selection committee to begin the process of selecting a new President/CEO. Moreno will remain in her position over the next few months, through completion of that process.

No family ever pays St. Jude for the care their child receives and, for every child treated here, thousands more have been saved worldwide through St. Jude discoveries. The hospital has played a pivotal role in pushing U.S. pediatric cancer survival rates from 20 to 80 percent overall, and is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted to children. It is also a leader in the research and treatment of blood disorders and infectious diseases in children. St. Jude was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, who believed that no child should die in the dawn of life. e are happy to announced that this year’s Ed Rivera, Sr. scholarship recipients are: Logan Lirette, Julissa Aaron, Brianne Bertolaccini and Mary Ellen ChowAntone. Each year fundraisers and other activities are held to help outstanding students who wish to continue higher education. The students must have earned a 3.5 GPA or better and have donated several hours of community service to area agencies, churches, and participated in extra-curricular activities such as

Campus Organizations and Mock Trials. The ladies auxiliary restarted this program in honor of Ed Rivera, Sr. a few years ago and have helped several students further their education of higher learning. Our committee, under the leadership of Madam President Ruth Mora 2011-12, was very proud to present each student with a check in the amount of $974. We could not have done this without the support of our Monday Night Football, DinnerDance/Silent Auction and Taco Tuesday events and, most especially, the support of our Bakersfield community.
