Foster youth overcomes adversity, prepares for CSUB
R
ayna Dillard does so much — and dreams of so much more! She’s a student, great-granddaughter, actress, police explorer, author, and foster child. She just turned 18 and is officially on her own living in a dormitory room at California State University, Bakersfield participating in the Summer Bridge program. The Criminal Justice major just graduated weeks ago from Ridgeview High School and says: “In 10 years, I see myself being a cop — hopefully, an internet cop.” Rayna recently met her junior high English teacher Amy Luther and me to update us on her life when she explained that she’d love to track down pedophiles on the Internet — which she thinks would utilize her skills in law enforcement, web design, acting, and writing. Rayna participated in the police explorers program during high school and plans to continue until she’s 21. The Information Technology Academy became a part of her life in high school. She also felt right at home at RHS under the guidance of Drama Department Chair Jennifer Resolme and even performed in a Bakersfield Music Theatre production. And, she’s authored a fanta-
sy book. This is one amazing young woman! The young writer has worked on “Fallen Angel” since her junior high days. “It’s fantasy but it incorporates all my friends at the time and includes incidents that occurred to me or my friends,” Rayana said. As she and Miss Luther glanced Education columnist through the proof, Rayna explained that she’s taking an English class now through Summer Bridge and hopes to take a creative writing class soon. The author of some 50 short stories says she hopes to get a job in the Walter Stiern Library — her favorite place to be — shelving books. Pretty much a life-long foster child, Rayna’s great-grandmother fought to get custody of the 10-month-old and raised her until Rayna’s move to a dorm at CSUB. She says she plans to remain in the dorms through her four years at the school — as

he Alzheimer’s Association invites Bakersfield and Kern County residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the first-ever Bakersfield Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The Park at River Walk will be the site of the Walk on Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. “There has never been a greater need for the citizens of Bakersfield to join in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by participating in Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” said Carol Hatton, the CEO and president of Continuum Senior Care in Bakersfield and co-organizer of the Bakersfield Walk. “Funds raised will provide free care and support services to the Kern County residents living with Alzheimer’s, while also contributing to advancing critically needed research.” The Walk is the first step in the Alzheimer’s Association’s plans to open an office to serve the residents of Kern County. Today, approximately 10,000 Kern
County residents — and their families — suffer with Alzheimer’s. Without a breakthrough in research, that number is expected to jump to almost 21,000 residents by 2030. Until a treatment or cure is found, the Alzheimer’s Association offers free support services to families, including care consultations, support groups and education for families and professionals. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk; it’s an experience for people living in Kern County to learn about Alzheimer’s disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities, the latest in Alzheimer’s research and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. In addition to the Walk, participants will enjoy entertainment, friend-
ship and lunch. Start or join a team today at alz.org/walk. About the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s: The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Since 1989, the Alzheimer’s Association mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk®; now the Alzheimer’s Association is continuing to lead the way with Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s – the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. About the Alzheimer's Association: The Alzheimer’s Association is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research. Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
