Do less cardio, more weights

B

elieve it or not, if your trying to lose body fat and you’re not seeing results as fast as you would like, it may be because you’re doing too much cardio. Yes, that’s right. According to Sheer Balance Magazine, it’s far better to do high intensity cardio, coupled with short rest periods for 20 minutes, rather than the mundane “steady state” cardio that so many of us are used to. It’s so 1980s! You know, you get on a aerobic machine, stay there for an hour, believe the lie the Fitness columnist machine spits out regarding calories burned, and voila, you think you’ve done the best you can toward your fat and weight loss goal. But the truth is, you haven’t. If you’re not training for a race, marathon or triathlon, then there is no need to spend hours upon hours doing boring cardio. That’s good news, right?

GINA ROLOW

Y O U R

It’s much more effective to do tabata, or any other high intensity exercise, for 20 to 25 minutes. Then hit the weights for your large muscle groups — then small ones — for the remaining duration of your hour-long workout. Besides, all that wear and tear takes its toll on the joints. While there are numerous benefits to doing aerobic exercise, strength training provides some benefits that cardio cannot, including increased muscular and bone strength, lean body mass and an energy boost (called metabolic post burn) that sometimes can last up to 48 hours. So do both, but focus most of your workout time on the resistance training, and see the transformation of your body that will really take place! More information, visit bodybyginarolow.com. Gina Rolow, owner of Body by Gina, is a personal trainer. Body by Gina has a new location at 4000 Fruitvale Ave., Suite 10. Rolow conducts one-on-one private sessions, semi-private sessions and boot camps. She also teaches fitness at Cal State Bakersfield and has a combined 30 years in the fitness industry. PG&E summer jobs program empowers Highland High student COURTESY OF GREATER BAKERSFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

M

eet Kendall Black! He is the future of the U.S. Army and soon-to-be alumni of the PG&E Boys & Girls Clubs summer jobs program. A senior at Highland High School, Black was assigned to the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce this summer. The teen said he made a decision to start working and gain experience, but what he didn’t know were the things he would accomplish, and the empowerment he would receive. “I would easily participate in this internship program again,” Black said. “I really enjoy the people I work with at the chamber, their support and encouragement, and I am excited about my future.” During his time with the chamber, he helped plan the chamber’s annual fundraiser “Chamber Palooza.” “His renewed enthusiasm throughout the planning process brought energy to the event and a new perspective,” said Pauline Bartlett, project manager. “We could not imagine him not being there. He was extremely helpful.”

“This program provides the future workforce more than just a job. It develops soft skills that most youth don’t develop in school,” chamber president and CEO Cindy Pollard said. “Kendall showed dependability, time management skills, a positive work ethic and was a team player throughout his internship.” At the end of his senior year, Black will begin his U.S. Army training in Fort Benning, Ga. After his service, Black plans to return home to BakersBlack field where he will enroll at Cal State Bakersfield and pursue a degree and career in criminal justice.
