Shannon Grove honors Bob Otto as district’s Veteran of the Year BY KRISTINA BROWN Community contributor

ssemblywoman Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) has honored Bob Otto as the 2012 Veteran of the Year for the 32nd Assembly District. Lieutenant Otto, a Korean War Veteran and cancer survivor, served 20 years with the Air Force and 30 years as a teacher in Bakersfield, the last 26 years at East Bakersfield High School. “Mr. Otto has embodied patriotism and dedication to our country throughout his entire life. He continues to inspire these qualities in others and I am proud to honor him today in this special celebration,” said Assemblywoman Shannon Grove. Bob Otto enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 and served as a basic flight and instrument instructor until 1946. He then earned a Bachelor’s Degree in U.S. History from Whittier College while serving in the Air Force Reserves. With the outbreak of the Korean War, Mr. Otto was recalled into combat duty and completed 56 missions before returning to teach in Bakersfield in 1951. Active in the

local community, he volunteers as a Rifle Club safety instructor, is a life member of the VFW and related veterans organizations, and plays the trumpet at veterans’ funeral services as a member of the Associated Veterans of Kern County. Mr. Otto is currently working on a Master’s Degree in Education from California State University, Fresno. He is 90 years old and he and his wife celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last year. The couple resides in Bakersfield. Assemblywoman Grove and Bob Otto were joined by other veterans and elected officials from throughout the state for the fifth annual Veteran of the Year Recognition Luncheon that took place recently. Lawmakers praised the veterans for serving our nation by remembering a quote by President Abraham Lincoln: “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.”

or the second straight year, a group of children took on the heat, in order to take a stand against MS. They held a “Stand Against MS” to benefit their Walk MS team, “No MSn Around,” on Friday, July 20 at the Rite Aid located at 11200 Olive Dr. (near Jewetta Ave. in northwest Bakersfield). The children, who are between the ages of seven and 13, sold lemonade and Kool-Aid in front of the Rite Aid store. All of the proceeds will benefit Bakersfield's Walk MS, which raises money for programs and services to help the thousands of people affected by multiple sclerosis (MS) in Kern County, along with cutting-edge research worldwide. Last year, the team raised over $2,000 total, $400 from the lemonade stand. “I don't know anyone with MS,” explained 13-year-old McKenna Tessandori, “but my mom has always taught me how important it is to give, instead of take. That’s why I’m part of this team, and that’s why I’m raising money.” Walk MS will be held Saturday, October 27 at Yokuts Park. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Southern California & Nevada Chapter is currently looking for people who would like to be part of the fundraiser, whether it be as a walker, planning committee member, or volunteer. 1,200 walkers are expected to take the 1.5- or 3-mile stroll along the Kern River Bike Path this fall. Halloween-themed fun will be placed along the route and at the finish line back at Yokuts Park, where participants and volunteers will be treated with lunch by Santa Barbara Pizza & Chicken, RJs Bar & Grill, and Rubio’s. The festival area will also have live entertainment, an opportunity drawing with great prizes, a kids block, Star Wars troopers, costume contest and other awards, plus all the excitement that comes from supporting the generous spirit of Bakersfield's community. Anyone interested in registering or receiving more information can go online to: www.WalkToEndMS.org, or call: 321-9512 ext. 66401. About multiple sclerosis: • Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS,

an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. • Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The advancement, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer toward a world free of MS. • Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. • MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S. and 2.1 million worldwide. About the National Multiple Sclerosis Society • The National MS Society helps each person address the challenges of living with MS through our 50-state network of chapters. • Through our home office and 50state network of chapters, we fund more MS research, provide more services to people with MS, offer more professional education and further more advocacy efforts than any other MS organization in the world. • The Society is dedicated to achieving a world free of MS. We are people who want to do something about MS now. Join the movement at www.nationalMSsociety.org.
