Living through the loss of a loving husband, dad BY HILLARY HAENES Community contributor
T
his November will mark the 10-year anniversary of Dave Schrader’s loss to pancreatic cancer. He left behind Anna, his wife of 13 years, who had to find the strength to raise their two children, Lindsay and Patrick. “You spend your whole life protecting your children, and this was the one thing I couldn’t protect them from. They were my saving grace. I knew I had to move on because of them,” said Anna Schrader, 50. “It’s very difficult for me knowing that my children had to experience the pain of losing such a loving father.” To get through this emotional state, Anna had a wonderful support system of family and friends. She spent most time with her kids, ages 10 and 7, at the time of Dave’s passing. They would all cuddle in bed, doing silly things for laughs, like talking in Irish accents. “I really clung to the kids. That’s what got me through it. Now I count my blessings and am thankful for what I have. I was blessed to have a great husband. I always wanted to make Dave proud and do right by our children,” she said. Anna also relied on the power of

prayer, often going to church to pray for strength to help guide her in raising her kids solo. “Even after my father passed away, she kept going,” Lindsey, 20, said about her mom’s drive to live her life. “She went to work … she’s a strong woman.” When Lindsay turned 14, she fully understood her family’s circumstances and grew angry, she said. She was never angry with her mom, but took her aggression out on her. Within a few years, Lindsay matured and realized her mom was right, that it was not time to focus on Dave’s death, but on the future. “My mom has taught me to not dwell in the past, to try new things and to be fabulous,” she said. “I didn’t want to be known as the girl that lost her dad — I wanted to be known as the girl who came out on the other side.” Now, Lindsey and Anna have grown closer and are each other’s best friends. These two bubbly blondes enjoy spinning and shopping, or just getting coffee from Starbucks while running errands together. Local youth director receives ‘Kohl’s Cares’ scholarship BY JACKIE KACALA Community contributor
T
he Kohl’s Department Stores’ Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program honors nearly 200 deserving volunteers with $1,000 scholarships toward higher education. Sharila Stewart, 17, from Bakersfield was chosen from more than 35,000 nominees nationwide for making a positive impact in her community. Sharila serves as the youth director for the Social Empowerment and Educational Development program, assisting Stewart inner city African American high school students on educational curriculum and test preparation to help them graduate and get into college. Sharila will qualify for the chance to receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships for higher education. In total this year, Kohl’s will recognize young
volunteers with more than $400,000 in scholarships and prizes. Rechima Dean, the person who nominated Sharila for the Kohl’s Scholarship said, “Sharila Stewart has been a key, invaluable leader of the Social Empowerment and Educational Development program. SEED is a community outreach program dedicated to increasing the number of inner city African Americans at four-year universities. She became involved in the program in April 2012 and continues to participate. “Sharila is the youth director of the program and has never failed to go above and beyond her responsibilities. She spent the entire summer of 2012 working with the program full time, often seven days a week. She would come in at 8 each morning and assist with preparing for the day; often, she would not leave until 10 or 12 that night. She prepared each laptop for use and served as the maintenance worker for the technology. the fall to study psychology. As a thirdgrade teacher, Anna’s nurturing personality just wants her daughter to be an independent woman, to go to school and have her own career. “I wanted to be close to my children. It’s been my first priority to have a close relationship with them,” said Anna. “With Lindsay, I totally admire her love of life and the fact that she has always been calming to me. She has a zest for life … and inspires me to be the best that I can be.” Her son, Patrick, 17, has inspired his mom to have more fun and be adventurous, which is why over the last couple
of years, Anna has taken a liking to half marathons and 5Ks, spin class and cycling. She completed a halfcentury in March and is training for a full-century ride (100 miles) in August in honor of Dave. “I’m trying to be an inspiration to my children, to move forward and have a positive attitude,” said Anna. “That’s what this year is all about — moving forward for Dave and his family. The first hour, athletes completed a dynamic, sport-oriented warm-up, and then moved to speed, agility, plyometric and power training. The training was done at Truxtun Park. During the second hour, they went inside and did their core

recording their scores. It was wonderful to see how patient she was with the SEED students, many of which have very poor math skills and do not know basic multiplication or division. Due largely to her unwavering confidence in them and steady support, all of the students in the program have improved in mathematics by leaps and bounds and are on track to being at grade level. She created the program’s website, and dedicated many hours to providing useful links for homework help and university information. I am so thankful that she is the youth director of the SEED program. Without her assistance, intelligence, and selflessness, I do not know what I would have done. She has helped nearly 50 students become more confident in their abilities and stronger students who are ready to achieve. It is clear that she loves giving back to her community.

The group, ranging from ages 13 to 20 years old, performed deadlifts, front squats, pull-ups, single leg squats, cable chops, slideboard exercises and medicine ball work. This culminated with an increase in vertical jump as high as 3 inches and agility test times that dropped an average of 20 percent. Congratulations to these ath-

Additionally, Kaiyan volunteered at the 2012 Volkslauf event with San Joaquin Community Hospital. • Michelle Packer, 17, started Teens for Our Troops in 2010 to encourage, support, and show appreciation for our local troops fighting in combat zones around the world, as well as for veterans
of wars past and families of deployed soldiers. She has spearheaded several events and schoolwide collections consisting of over 1,500 personal care items, 700 new socks, and 5,000 used books/ and DVDs. Winners are chosen based on initiative, leadership, generosity and project benefits and outcome. Each regional-level winner qualifies for one of Kohl’s 10 national scholarships, which will be announced this summer. National winners will each receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf. In total, Kohl’s will recognize more than 2,300 young volunteers with more than $400,000 in scholarships and prizes.
