KCHCC awards scholarships to 13 local students COURTESY OF KERN COUNTY HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE he Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Business Education Foundation, the nonprofit arm of the Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce that is dedicated to educational and business development, recognized 13 local students in a scholarship award ceremony on Thursday, July 19, at the Bakersfield Marriott. The foundation provided scholarships to more than a dozen Kern County deserving students from Arvin, Delano, Shafter, Wasco, Lamont and Bakersfield. “The purpose of the Foundation is to provide financial assistance to students furthering their education in business or related fields,” said Jay Tamsi, CEO/President of the Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “We reviewed an array of scholarship applications from students who have contributed to the Hispanic community as well as other nonprofits and community organizations. Looking at the scholarship honorees, we feel that an investment in these students is an investment in Kern County.” Tamsi said while a few of them will be headed off to schools out of the area, a common theme raised among the recipients is that all want to give back and contribute to Kern County, even if it means returning home, wearing the hat of a doctor, engineer or public safety employee. The theme of the scholarship event was “Investing in Tomorrow’s Future.” The evening kicked off with a reception and music. Alzheimer’s Association offers free workshop BY BARBARA LANZ-MATEO Community contributor

Local nurseries help solve the mystery of safe, effective weed killers

I

f weeds are taking over your lawn and garden, spray weed killers before 7 a.m. and use a spreader-sticker with your product. A spreader-sticker is a special kind of material you can add to your spray mixture. The spreader-sticker acts like a “glue” to help increase the adhesion of weed killers to plant surfaces — and will help the weed killer absorb better without evaporating right away. Also make sure the root area of your lawn or plants is damp when you spray the killers which will result in less damage to what you want to keep. You can bring in samples of the weeds to Robby's Nursery and get specific importation on what and how to use. Weed killers can be tricky — you do not want to over use them so come by for extra help! This week’s gardening tip is from Kathy Robinson of Robby’s Nursery. Do YOU have a gardening tip you’d like to share with our readers? Post your gardening tips and photos of your garden on our web site at: www.bakersfieldvoice.com

he Alzheimer's Association in collaboration with Kaiser Permanente will present The Savvy Caregiver workshop, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, August 25 and 26, at the Kaiser Education Center, in Bakersfield. Developed by clinicians and educators, this free workshop presents ideas from many disciplines and sources and is a unique approach to family caregiver education. Caregivers will learn about Alzheimer's and other related dementia; the toll of caregiving; managing daily and life behaviors; caring for yourself while caring for someone else; decision making; communication strategies; and more. The two-day free workshop goes through many details and scenarios that caregivers face. Caregiving is a complex job and entails many tasks. The basic premise of Savvy Caregiver training is that family caregivers need help and training for the work

they do every day. The principal task of the family caregiver is to manage day-to-day life, and the workshop provides attendees with professionallevel skills to do just that. The Kaiser Permanente Education Center is located at 3501 Stockdale Hwy., in the Second Floor Conference Room. For more information or to make a reservation to attend, contact Donna Beal at the Alzheimer’s Association Kern County Regional office at: 9123053 or email her at: dbeal@alz.org. The Alzheimer's Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research. Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support for all affected, and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Our vision is a world without Alzheimer’s. The California Central Chapter serves Kern, San Luis Obispo, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. alz.orgkohlskids.com.
