Get your stories, photos and blogs into the printed ‘Voice’ BY GENE GARAYGORDOBIL Voice Managing Editor

Have a great story to tell? How about a nice photo of your kids you’d like to share? Or maybe you have a blog that you think is interesting or inspiring. Well, we’d like to get it into The Bakersfield Voice, our citizen journalism newspaper distributed to more than 75,000 households each week. It’s easy to do, just go to our Web site: www.bakersfieldvoice.com, create a FREE profile and begin posting your stories, photos and blogs today. If you are not sure about grammar or

punctuation, don’t worry. We’ll help you by editing it before putting it in the newspaper. So, how do you get it into print? Well, the best thing to do is post early and often. The Bakersfield Voice prints on Thursdays and is distributed on Sundays to some Bakersfield households, along with scores of racks at local businesses. The best way to get something into print is to post a couple of weeks before you’d like for it to get into print. And although we can’t guarantee that your stories or photos will get into The Voice, you can increase your odds by getting your postings done by the following deadlines:

Issue Run dates Posting deadline to The Voice Web site Aug. 30 - Sept. 5 Items must be posted before Weds., Aug. 19 Sept. 6 - 12 Items must be posted before Weds., Aug. 26 Sept. 13 - 19 Items must be posted before Weds., Sept. 2 Sept. 20 - 26 Items must be posted before Weds., Sept. 9 Sept. 27 - Oct. 3 Items must be posted before Weds., Sept. 16 Oct. 4 - 10 Items must be posted before Weds., Sept. 23 Oct. 11 - 17 Items must be posted before Weds., Sept. 30 Oct. 18 - 24 Items must be posted before Weds., Oct. 7 Oct. 25 - 31 Items must be posted before Weds., Oct. 14 Nov. 1 - 7 Items must be posted before Weds., Oct. 21 If you’d like to advertise, please contact The Voice Sales Manager, Jaime De Los Santos, at 716-8632.

First Book-Bakersfield, local Advisory Board of First Book, is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books. First Book-Bakersfield formed in 2001 and has distributed more than 14,000 books to 3,200 prekindergarten through second grade Kern County students. The group is accepting applications for a fall book distribution to eligible pre-kindergarten through second-grade classes in Kern County. Applications will be available Aug. 20 through Sept. 18. Applications are available electronically from Teresa Twisselman by email: tetwisselman@kern.org Or at KGET-Ch.17, 2120 L St. and the Kern County Library (Beale branch) Completed applications must be received by Sept. 18 at: First Book-Bakersfield P.O. Legacy presents: One Girl’s Passion ... Another Girl’s Pain. Join us for a full, fun day that includes topics on, “How to Live a Life of Purity,” “What is Purity?” “Purity in the Heart and Mind” and “Purity in Friendships.” Other topics include: “The Importance of Family and Friends,” “How to be a True Friend” and “Living a Legacy.” This event will take place Saturday, Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Calvary Chapel Westbrook, 6501 Schirra Court. This is in honor of my daughter, Danielle Gould, who left behind an amazing legacy worth sharing, in hopes that it will encourage ladies to live a life of purity and to think about the legacy that we will one day leave behind when we die. We will also enjoy a fun fashion show and a time of meeting others during our luncheon. Cost is $10. For more information, please call Sherrill at 3976000.

About the cover Local grandmother,Teresa McFarland, aka. GmaT, invited her grandchildren to join “Camp Grandma” this summer. McFarland and her young “campers” spent time parading around Bakersfield hot spots. Your photo could be on our next cover! Photos and stories for the Aug. 30 issue must be posted by Wednesday, Aug. 19 at 5 p.m.

Danielle Gould, Sherrill Gould’s daughter, died in a tragic automobile accident in 2004. Gould started the “One Girl’s Passion ... Another Girl’s Pain” events to honor her daughter’s memory.

Troop 407 Girl Scouts recently went to Camp 101, learning the basic camp skills up in the Sierras at Camp-El-O-Win. Some others went horseback riding at Maryann’s Country Farm in Rosedale and learned to care for horses — washing, feeding, brushing, cleaning, walking, training, commands, actually riding them and more! They had a blast!. Also nut/candy sales begin in September to October. Call Troop 407’s leader for more details at 833-8749.

Paw Print City: When the light comes on There’s something all but magical that happens when a dog “gets it,” no matter what the “it” might be. Recently we gained the use of a swimming pool. Darby has seen pools on many occasions, but has never been up close and personal with one that’s in use. Other than trying to avoid falling in, he hadn’t found any real benefit to the giant puddle in the ground. The first couple of times we went swimming, Darby would wander around the pool, head slightly tilted. While I doubt he was pondering our fitness as pet parents, he seemed decidedly confused about why in the world people would choose to climb into such a puddle and seem happy about doing so. After nearly daily visits to the pool, somewhere near the one-week mark Darby was pacing around the edge, following us as we wandered our way from one end to the other. The summer’s 100plus degree days made the concrete around the pool far from comfortable, so

we began splashing some water over the edge of the pool to try and get the ground to something slightly below foot-sizzling. Darby, seeing water fly through the air, albeit all of six inches off the ground, whipped around Pet columnist like a shot. He has always been singularly crazy about water that comes from a hose or a sprinkler head — so crazy that if you actually want to get some watering done in anything approaching a timely manner it’s best to leave him inside. He scurried to the edge of the pool and hunched there so intensely you’d have thought we were dangling steaks from the end of our fin-

VICKY THRASHER

gers. Darby was quickly rewarded with another splash and a chorus of “yeas” and “go Darby” as he raced around trying to catch the water coming at him from different angles. In that moment, it was obvious he “got it” — “it”, in this case, being the fun that can be had poolside. If you’re attentive to your dog, whether they’re learning to shake hands, lie down on command, or the finer points of chasing splashing water, you can almost see the switch flip on behind their eyes when they’ve figured out what you want, and why it’s good for them to give it to you. Dogs live for those moments, and dog owners should, too. They represent the coming together of two different species, with two different communication styles, into a single, agreed-upon understanding that benefits both parties. What could be better? Summertime fun at ‘Camp Grandma’ BY TERESA MCFARLAND, AKA “GMAT” Community contributor

What do you get when you mix a backyard covered in Bakersfield dirt, a slide and a swing set, five crazy cousins and add a water hose? Marvelous MUD! The kick-off event of “Camp Grandma” was a mud puddle for a mud-pie maker’s paradise — which included painting each other with the slippery slime! Five of my grandchildren — ages 3 to 9 — enjoyed four days together with lots of fun activities. Besides making mud castles — complete with mud moats — we visited Murray Family Farms, Dr. Mike McMahan’s Dental office, Dewar’s Ice Cream on California Avenue, Jastro Spray Park, Tanglewood Farms Miniature Horse Ranch, Pioneer Village at the Kern County Museum and the McMurtrey Aquatics Center. When we weren’t gallivanting all over town, we had s’mores to make, plenty of swinging to do, chickens to feed (and catch), crafts to paint, stories to read, songs to sing, Bible verses to learn, and time enough to write and draw all about it as well. The Grand Finale was a luau to celebrate GmaT’s birthday. The wellrested and grateful parents came to collect their happy, although somewhat dirty, children and took them home. Whew! What a week! Now I need a massage, a mani and pedi — and a NAP!
