Plush hippos donated to young burn patients COURTESY OF SAN JOAQUIN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL ippos have given Lili Marsh plenty of smiles over the years. As she donated about 100 of her stuffed hippos from her collection — which she started in college — Marsh hoped they would provide even more smiles for some of the younger patients at The Grossman Burn Center at San Joaquin Community Hospital. Hospital officials seemed confident that the menagerie would be successful in bringing happiness to those in need of some good cheer. “When you are a child and you are in the hospital, I think you always appreciate stuffed animals, and they bond with them as they live with them day in and day out in the burn unit,”

said Karen Garner, director of critical care services at the hospital. In fact, children make up a good portion of the patients seen at the burn center, Garner said. “Almost 50 percent of our admissions are children, and their age range is 6 months to 19 years,” she said. “People ask me sometimes at what age they outgrow stuffed animals and the gift is no longer meaningful, but the answer is never!” Marsh began collecting stuffed hippos because people just kept giving them to her. The whole thing started when she displayed a single pink hippo in her dorm room and it was assumed hippos were her “thing.” Actually, that wasn’t the case, Marsh please turn to HIPPOS / PAGE 2

Fit exercise into your lifestyle — your body will thank you

Y

ou can’t burn calories by complaining — well, I am assuming we burn some by yapping about wanting to exercise, but I’ve never seen a “fit body” develop from it. We are all busy. I like to tell my clients that somebody busier than they are is finding the time to work out right now! Kids, jobs, hobbies — you name it, we have things that must be done. But, you have to make exercise a priority, and it does take work on your part. For example, if you have an appointment that can be postponed until after the window of time for exercise for you that day, then delay or move your appointment. If you have company over, tell them you’ll be back in an hour. They won’t miss you. If you have a chance to walk — yes, even in the summer — do it! If

you golf, don’t take the cart. The calories you burn by extra activity will credit you in a fit way. Your body will do what your brain thinks, so think positive thoughts and your body will thank you. hippos, although that first one (the pink-hued hippo who is now a little worse for wear) is the most special. No, he was not part of the donation — Marsh said she could never part with him. But the other 100 or so plush hippos will find good homes and will surely bring those smiles.

Local Girl Scouts host ‘service project day’ BY JORDAN KING Community contributor

G

ood deeds are done every day, but Bakersfield Girl Scouts recently made an entire day of them. On July 27, Girl Scouts from Girl Scouts of Central California South, Service Unit 626, hosted a “service project day.” The day consisted of seven different community service projects including a community clean-up, canned food drive, making cards for veterans, senior citizens and sick children, making happy socks for Bakersfield SPCA cats, placemats for the hungry, and desserts for the homeless. About Girl Scouts of Central California South We serve more than 10,000 girls and 3,000 adult volunteers in Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera and Tulare counties, including 5,000 deserving girls through its Girl Scouts Connect Program. Girl Scouts aim to give every girl access to life-changing experiences that enable them to reach their full potential, through programs that teach practical life skills and leadership.
