irl Scouts of Central California South is proud to announce the 2013 honorees of the “Women Inspiring Girls” award. They are Joan Dezember, philanthropist; Betty Finch, Kern County’s first female homicide detective and gourd artist; and Cynthia Pollard, president and CEO of the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce. This 5th annual awards luncheon recognizes dynamic women who have made a positive impact on their community, and this year’s honorees are role models in the fields of community service, law enforcement and business. They will be honored at a Dr. Seuss-inspired event on Oct. 4, at 11:30 a.m., at Valley Baptist Church, 4800 Fruitvale Ave. The honorees will join 27 other women from Kern and Fresno counties who have been recognized in the past five years with this prestigious Girl Scouts award. The funds raised from the luncheon support the Girl Scouts Connect program, which provides Girl Scouting opportunities to underserved, at-risk girls to help them realize their full potential. Today, about 80 percent of women executives and business owners are former Girl Scouts, as well as twothirds of women serving in U.S. Congress. It is the goal of Girl Scouts of Central California South to ensure all girls have the opportunity to discover, connect, and take action in their communities by learning leadership, decision-making and practical life skills. Meet the three honorees here: Joan Dezember has a heart for those in need of assistance, which is why she has been a longtime volunteer in the community of Kern County. She is an active board member of Garden Pathways, Flood Ministries, and the CSUB Foundation, a founding member of the Kern Community Foundation, a member of the Junior League of Bakersfield, and a member of PEO International, an educational-based program. “God has given us a gift of love, and we are to share that with others. Encouragement and enrichment is something that everyone needs and

when you can give that to another person, you have given them the most wonderful gift,” Dezember said. Dezember, a former Girl Scout, represents for young girls the epitome of ethical behavior and commitment to the enrichment of the lives of women and men around her. Betty Finch was the first women assigned to patrol in Ridgecrest, as well as the first women bailiff, homicide detective and SWAT hostage Joan Dezember negotiator in Kern County. She attended the FBI National Academy and was the department suspect sketch and skill reconstruction artist. Her artistic skills and passion for science led her to develop knifeBetty Finch fork and spoon sunflowers, grow giant pumpkins, and manipulate gourds to create awardwinning sculptures. Finch’s love for travel and adventure took her to scuba-dive the Great Barrier Reef, win a heptathlon Cynthia Pollard gold medal at the International Police Olympics in Australia, explore a remote jungle in Liberia, research chimpanzees in Africa, meet the world’s foremost molded gourd expert in China, and dance with a North Korean dignitary in China. After overcoming the life of a battered wife for five years, being homeless for two years, and putting herself through Bakersfield College as a waitress, Finch is an example of what a girl can do with strength and ambition. Excess weight: There are no quick fixes for losing it

I

think most experts would agree that, in general, people should consume less and move more. That being said, some strategies preached by many popular weight loss programs are, well, incorrect. Most calorie-restricted diets operate under “the more weight you lose each week, the better” premise. The big problem I see here is there is no distinction made as to whether you lose appreciable amounts of fat or muscle. Just dieting to lose “weight” can turn you into a skinny “fat” girl. This is where diets go wrong. Most popular diet institutions don’t take into consideration what your body composition is. They are just putting you on a scale — and taking your money to their bank. In other words, no distinction is made as to whether

you lose appreciable amounts of fat or muscle. Unfortunately, just cutting calories in the absence of resistance training tends to result in the condition where you also wind up losing a considerable amount of muscle mass — and that is not good. Not only does conventional dietFitness columnist ing just make you a smaller version of yourself — for example, going from 180 pounds and 30 percent body fat, down to 160 pounds but remaining at please turn to WEIGHT LOSS / PAGE 2

the 30 percent body fat — it also leads to a condition where you end up with a significantly slowed metabolic rate because you lost muscle in the process of dieting only, and not adding resistance training to keep the muscle which acts like a fat-burning furnace in your body. According to Grame Thomas, an expert nutritionist from London, Ontario, who specializes in the field of sports and nutrition, females seem to use their body weight as the primary determinant of body image. Men, on the other hand, while dealing with their own overweight issues, don’t seem to have that same, “I’ve got to be this weight or I won’t be happy.” Oh, the magical number. In fact, in a truly fascinating bit of gender psychology, body weight is one of those things that females obsess about constantly, and most men, while conscious of their weight, do not obsess about it like woman do. Research shows that women increasingly identify with a tiny, lesscurvy body shape as ideal, whereas men continue to find thicker, curvier women far more appealing. Is it fair to conclude then that: “thinness at all costs” arises from how females judge each other — and not from any pressures placed on females by men? So, if the weak, waif look isn’t something men find particularly appealing, it makes you wonder why women have decided skinny fatness is a look they should strive for. Of course, they don’t see it as striving for skinny fatness. Rather, they just see it trying to reach their “ideal body weight.” Are you following these three costly mistakes? • An over-reliance on low-intensity physical activities. • Wrong exercise selection when you do resistance training. • Eating too many highly processed “diet foods.” If you have been engaging in any of the above to lose precious amounts of muscle mass, and performing ample amounts of cardiovascular exercise to make sure that muscle mass never returns, you may be doing more harm than good. As a personal fitness trainer in Kern County for more than 30 years, I am asked these two questions on a daily basis: • How long will it take me to lose

“X” amount of pounds? • Will I get bulky if I lift weights? I do not know when you will reach your ideal weight and will not get bulky when weight training. Remember this: When you step on a scale, the number you see is the total body weigh. It does not take into consideration these seven important components of body composition: • water • fat • muscle • basal metabolic rate (BMR) • the relationship between your height and weight (BMI) • visceral fat • and subcutaneous fat

Please note that while two individuals may have identical BMI’s, one can be fit, have a healthy body fat, have excellent bone density and ampule muscle mass, while the other guy can be flabby, out-of-shape and ready to have a heart attack. Unfortunately, when you base your decisions solely on the scale, it is very difficult to determine whether you are becoming more like the fit guy or the chubby dude. If you continue to “aerobicise” yourself to the other side of America, then you will be yo-yoing all the way back, metabolically speaking, to your previous weight. In my studio, my students perform high intensity interval training, resistance training, core, agility and balance work. However, anything and everything can be modified. There are no cookie-cutter routines. I also offer a body scan to measure the seven components of body composition. According to one of my favorite websites, hasfit.com, you won’t be successful at getting fit until you get over the idea of “fast.” Stop looking for the quick fixes, stop wasting your time on pills and fad diets. Eat clean, exercise and have patience — you’ll get there. Trust this process, and you will get there! Questions? Comments? Visit bodybyginarolow.com.

Congressman takes ‘small business challenge’ BY MICHELLE ORROCK Community contributor

he National Federation of Independent Business continued its “Small Business Challenge” campaign recently as House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, experienced a day in the life of a small business owner in his home district. McCarthy joined Ray Ice, president of Kern Door, to participate in all aspects of small business ownership before heading to a constituent’s home to assist with a maintenance repair. “The Small Business Challenge events provide our members with an opportunity to show their legislators how burdensome layers of red tape from Washington are harming their businesses,” said Dan Danner, CEO of the federation. “America’s small businesses want to know that their elected representatives are hearing their voices and are fighting for policies that will positively impact their work and quality of life.” The federation’s nationwide campaign kicked off recently and will con-

The challenge events will allow members of U.S. Congress to experience firsthand the daily challenges involved with owning a small business, from daily operational and production tasks, to managerial responsibilities. “Small business owners in California aren’t able to grow or hire new employees due to new rules and regulations that are continuously being imposed on them by the federal government,” said John Kabateck, executive director for the federation’s California office. “We applaud Congressman McCarthy for taking the Small Business Challenge and for his tireless efforts to improve conditions for California’s job creators.” Said McCarthy: “Our local small businesses are the engine of our economy. As a former small business owner, I know the daily struggles that come from the burdens of taxes and regulations. We need to continue to work to simplify the lives of our small businesses so they can grow, expand and thrive.”
