Pistachio shells bloom into cute flower broach

I

stumbled upon this amazing find when I was checking out pistachio pictures on Google for a presentation I’ve been working on. At first I was like, “how does this have anything to do with pistachios?” Then, I took a closer look and was amazed that this entire flower was made out of pistachio shells! How cool — not to mention resourceful! I love me some pistachios and always thought it seemed like a waste to just throw the shells away. Pistachios have this really cool shape and hard texture ... but I, of course, am not creative enough to think of something like this. So I clicked on the photo to find Rebecca Douglas of ReLoved Designs’ cute little blog. She is one crafty chick — and what makes her cooler is that everything she makes has been

recycled! From the pistachio broaches (that I bought three of ) to her jewelry made from buttons and bottle caps, this is a girl after my own heart. Yay for environmentally chic! I was so excited when I got my broaches in the mail, especially since EVERYTHING had been recycled! Seriously, the broaches CANDICE came in these cute little boxes crafted from cereal boxes, ROGERS Columnist it was filled with shredded paper, undoubtedly from her own home. She even included a cute little handwritten note from a nutrition facts cut-out.

So please, go check out, and patronize this chicky — she’s pretty creative! And, if you want a pistachio broach tutorial, check out her blog at: www.reloveddesigns.com. Candice Rogers aka “The Old Lady At Heart” works in the agriculture industry as a Field Services Representative in Grower Relations in the Ag industry and in her off hours she devotes time to preserving the past and adding her own personal flare to traditional arts once attributed to a more simple generation. She enjoys blogging and showing others how fun these traditional arts can be. Her goal is to encourage others to slow down and get back to the basics — while learning from her own mistakes and laughing with her along the way. Her blog — which is intended for the 21 and over crowd is at: www.theoldladyatheart.blogspot.com.

andice Rogers is a frequent blogger and columnist for The Bakersfield Voice. She appreciates the past and a more simple way of living one’s life. Rogers’ blogs and columns contain tips on everything from how to make homemade cheese — to how to teach yourself how to crochet in just a few simple steps. When she isn’t busy creating, Rogers is a Field Services Representative in Grower Relations in the local agriculture industry. This is what she has to say about herself: “My name is Candice and I am the bravest scaredy-cat you will ever meet. If it seems feasible, I will try it; but, if there is the slightest doubt that I may fail, I won’t even attempt the task. I have a really competitive Candice Rogers nature and must be the best at everything I try — which is why I choose my tasks accordingly. Mix that with a perfectionist gene I inherited from my dad and it’s a pretty deadly combination. Always trying to come out on top, I’ve tried everything from modeling to rock climbing. My passion is trying new things that seem out of the ordinary. I’ve always loved the outdoors and have a deep respect for the world around me — which is why I have a deep appreciation for the past and people who lived and farmed off of their own land for survival. “Live simply” is a motto taken for granted in this day of the iPad and fast food. To me, “simple” means better, slower, wholesome, and more fulfilling — which is why my latest quest has been learning to live more simply,

one task at a time. Whether it be canning my own tomato sauce, learning to sew and crochet, or overcoming a brown thumb through trial and error, I wanted to show others of my generation how rewarding and fun these activities could be. I started a blog seven months ago documenting my journey of trying to do things like they were meant to be experienced: “ ... from my own soil, with love and pride.” Even though the subject matter seems quite serious, I can promise my blog is anything but. I am still a normal twenty-something, who enjoys a good drink, or two — particularly dark beer. I can’t help but insert my foot in my mouth at times, and never, ever takes myself seriously. I think this is what makes my blog PHOTO PROVIDED most real and fun for me to write. My advice to anyone wanting to start blogging: Write as if nobody will be reading it but you. If you start catering to certain audiences, that’s when your writing goes from entertaining, to blah. Check out my blog — www.theoldladyatheart.blogspot.com — and don’t be afraid to start living simply.” — Would you like to become a community contributor? School supplies collected for the needy BY KELSEY HENG Community contributor

A

s Bakersfield schools prepare to open their doors for another year of learning, most parents are shopping for back-to-school bargains using a school-issued supply list as their guide. But this year, Bakersfield kids are thinking beyond their own backpacks and buying supplies for kids they have never met. Bakersfield residents are stocking up on items for Operation Christmas Child — a massive year-round project of international Christian relief and evangelism organization Samaritan's Purse—where participants fill shoe boxes with school supplies, toys, necessity items and letters of encouragement for kids overseas. “We believe this is a great testimony of the caring hearts of the people of Kern County for children around the world living in desperate need,” said Lisa Lockman, Bakersfield Area Coordinator for Operation Christmas Child. The Bakersfield area contributed more than 10,400 gift-filled shoeboxes to the Operation Christmas Child Project during National Collection Week in November 2010, more than a 50 percent increase from the number collected last year. Of the broad category of items placed in the shoeboxes, school supplies are one of the most critical. Individuals, families, churches and businesses can stock up on school supplies for less during back-to-school sales around town, often finding items such as crayons, packs of pens or, glue sticks or colored pencils at greatly reduced prices. “Our goal this year is to collect 12,400 gift-filled shoeboxes,” said Lockman. “So these sales enable participants to pack even more shoeboxes to help us meet this goal.” Lockman explains that, “as the Volunteer Area Coordinators for Operation Christmas Child, we have heard from many individuals, who are able to pack more boxes because of the great savings on back-to-school items such as pencils, pens, glue sticks, crayons and colored

While attending CSUB, she served as an Associated Students Inc. board member representing the School of Business and Public Administration. She plans to remain in Kern County in order to build a career with the county or city, and/or the health care industry. She aspires to return to CSUB to get her master’s in business administration following a few years of work experience. She credits her mother for encouraging her to always be the best she can be and her husband for always supporting her dreams.

O

n September 8 at Seven Oaks Country Club, the prestigious John Brock Community Service Award will be presented to Susan C. Hersberger, Public Affairs Director of Aera Energy LLC. Included in this event is the award of four John Brock Scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each to highly deserving students in the School of Business and Public Administration at California State University, Bakersfield. Scholarships are funded from the event’s proceeds through CSUB’s John Brock Endowment. BPA Dean, Dr. John Emery states, “Four recipients have been identified whose academic achievements qualify them for this finanSusan Hersberger cial award. These students have demonstrated not only academic achievement, but the leadership and community service for which the John Brock Scholarships were established. Their future success in private and public sectors will be important to Bakersfield and Kern County.”

This year’s recipients are: Alexander Anfoso — a junior in management and finance, a working family man and father of two children who began his college career while serving in the military where he completed nine years of service before being honorably discharged in 2008. During summer breaks in high school, Alexander learned the value of hard work while working in the agricultural fields of Kern County. After high school, he learned the principles of leadership, discipline, and mental toughness while honorably serving his country in the United States Air Force. Alexander currently works for the Employment Development Department through the Veteran’s Work Study program, where he assists and advises primarily lowincome members of the community with job searching and career assistance services. Upon completing his bachelor’s degree, Alexander plans to enroll in the MBA program at CSUB, and to apply his educational, business, and leadership experience to benefit the communities of Kern County. Shanda N. Delgado — a senior in business administration who is married to a local law enforcement officer. After graduating high school as a valedictorian, she has continued to work very hard to maintain her solid G.P.A. while aspiring to graduate early.

Cameron Holder — a senior majoring in business finance. He is a single parent who also works full time. He began his college educaPHOTO PROVIDED tion at Bakersfield College, where he had a 3.7 G.P.A and graduated with cum laude honors with an associate of arts degree in economics. While at CSUB, his experience has been an excellent one. It has been a place where he has grown and developed as an individual. He has been proficient in all his courses. His six-year-old daughter has been his inspiration and motivation to find success in life. After graduating, he plans to take his skills to an investment company. He also wants to pursue his education with a MBA degree. One of his primary goals is to become an entrepreneur. Joshua Robles — a senior majoring in business administration with a concentration in accounting. While working full time, he graduated from Bakersfield College as a first-generation college student, and his desire to seek personal growth has led him to experience academic success. Since transferring to CSUB, Joshua has earned a place on the Dean’s List every quarter, and he was recently inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society, which recognizes only the top 10 percent of business students. In addition, he has volunteered at the Community Action Partnership of Kern Food Bank and will reach the one gallon donation mark at the Houchin Community Blood Bank this year. Joshua plans to obtain a C.P.A. license and continue working in the Bakersfield area after graduation. Tickets to the event are $150 per person or $1,200 per table until Aug. 26 and can be purchased from the CSUB School of Business and Public Administration by calling 654-2157. For more information about the John Brock Award Dinner, call Keith Brice at 322-4241.

pencils. This is music to our ears.” This shoe box packing effort, requiring months of organization and preparation, will reach some 8.5 million kids who are suffering because of natural disaster, disease, war, terrorism, famine and poverty. For many of these children, the shoe box will be the first gift they have ever received. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has hand-delivered shoe box gifts to more than 86 million hurting children in some 130 countries. Step-by-step shoe box packing instructions are available at: www.samaritanspurse.org/occ. For more information on how to participate in Operation Christmas Child, call: 714-432-7030 or visit: www.samaritanspurse.org/occ. National Collection Week for gift-filled shoe boxes is Nov. 14-21; however, shoe box gifts are collected all year at the Samaritan’s Purse headquarters in Boone, N.C.
