n response to the recent series of sexual assaults in east Bakersfield, the Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault is providing the following important safety tips with the community. While the events are alarming, there are preventative steps you can take to decrease the likelihood of becoming a victim:
• Pay attention to your surroundings as you are coming and going from work, home and your daily activities. • We tend to be most vulnerable in our homes, because we have let our guard down. Stay alert! • If you see someone or something that does not look right, call 911 • Keep your doors locked. If you have

Groups seeking healthcare mentors BY PATRICIA MARQUEZ Community contributor
K
ern Economic Development Corporation-Alliance of Medical Professionals is looking for mentors from the healthcare field to help us prepare local high school students to join the industry's workforce. The commitment requires just one hour per month, but truly makes an impact on the students. After years of working closely with professionals in the healthcare field, we have learned that Kern County faces significant challenges in finding and hiring local talent. The nonprofit Kern Economic Development Foundation is taking strides to remedy that issue by preparing local kids to fill local positions. The alliance pairs small groups of high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with mentors from the healthcare industry who offers them guidance in areas such as being a successful student, preparing for college, and workplace soft skills, all the while interjecting their “real world” experiences to foster healthcare interest and strong relationships with the students. Mentoring sessions last just one hour per month at the Health Careers
Y O U R
Academy in East High School. A mentor orientation is provided in late August to prepare for the school year, and once the school year begins participants have a thorough mentoring curriculum to follow at each monthly session. No past experience with mentoring is needed, nor are background checks. It’s easy, it’s fun, and it really helps the kids become better students, better community members, and better future professionals to hire into certain fields. Consider becoming a mentor or encourage someone you know to participate. We are happy to have any professional from the industry interested in volunteering including clinicians, researchers, administration, support staff, nonprofits and others. Call 862-5156 or email marquezp@kedc.com if you are interested in becoming a mentor or would like more information on the program. Your participation could contribute to a stronger healthcare workforce and a stronger economy in the near future.
