EDITOR’S NOTE
Thinking outside la caja n case you’ve been living under a rock, we’re still in the thick of a recession. Granted, the experts have determined that we’re likely through the worst of the storm. And although that is certainly a welcomed forecast for employers, business owners and all the worker bees out there, it’s still a tough economy to weather. At least for the time being. Still, with this issue of MÁS Magazine — our annual Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce issue and chamber member directory — we thought it a perfect time to take stock of the Latino business scene. How are we faring? What are
I
we doing to re-invent ourselves as we wade this? And does la cultura play a role in avoiding at least some of the downfall? Thanks to the help of KCHCC Chairman Joe Jimenez and other chamber members who are also business people, MÁS discovered there is indeed some good news to share. ¡Fantástico! Wendy Armijo, for instance, of Armijo & Lopez Advertising has experienced firsthand the tightening of belts among her clients and would-be clients. Marketing and advertising budgets among local businesses — make that, all businesses — have been chopped. OK, well then what, she thought.
By thinking outside la caja (the box) that is said to be key for business survival right now, Armijo & Lopez took another approach up with a client. Instead of not spending money to make money, spend it differently, i.e. a campaign for the local franchise of Little Caesar’s Pizza to step up markeing to Hispanics. And voila! Pizza sales went up and more dough — literally — for all! So it’s not so much that everyone needs to sit inside and wait for the sun to appear. By the looks of things, it’s safe to come out. Just bring an umbrella and some creativity ...

Huerta golf tournament to benefit youths he Fifth annual Dolores Huerta Foundation Golf Tournament will take place Oct. 9 at the Sycamore Canyon golf course in Arvin. The mission of the DHF is to inspire and motivate people to organize sustainable communities to attain social justice. The proceeds from this year’s event go toward the DHF Youth Leadership Program. The Youth Leadership Program has been instrumental in organizing numerous community events that continue Huerta’s legacy of training and educating the leaders of tomorrow. Their accomplishments include organizing a community resource fair, youth forums, food and clothing giveaways, Christmas toy drives, and numerous communi-

Letting youth take the lead with these projects gives them a sense of ownership in their community and provides them with skills that will benefit them as they pursue an education and a career. Perhaps the most popular part of the program amongst the kids is the camping trips DHF offers, which allow members of the Youth Leadership Program to learn about environmental stewardship, obtain leadership training and plan for future community projects. Past tournaments have included celebrities such as Eva Longoria, George Lopez
and Lupe Ontiveros. This year’s tournament features a hole-inone car giveaway sponsored by Family Motors and a number of other contests and prizes. “The golf tournament is a great way to help the youth in our community and have fun at the same time,” said Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers, president of the Huerta foundation and the namesake of the tournament. California dreamin’ — or nightmare? Editor’s note: The following article by California State Sen. Dean Florez (DShafter) was originally posted on The Huffington Post’s Web site Sept. 2. By Dean Florez Special to MÁS
SHAFTER — The summer harvest is a strange time to be contemplating the death of the California Dream. I leave the State Capitol, its endless budget battles, and drive 300 miles south through the gut of California — to this small farm town where I grew up and still live. I see the dreamers everywhere. They are bent over in the fields with curved blades Florez and buckets in hand, picking grapes and yodeling ranchera music beneath the 110-degree sun. In a month’s time, like some mythical bird, they have plucked clean more than 60 million boxes worth of Crimsons and Flames and Superiors from the vineyards of the San Joaquin Valley. At shift’s end, when they finally remove their ball caps and bandanas, I see the indigenous faces of rural Mexico. These are the Triqui and others Indians, who have come to California fleeing a new dust bowl. They share much with John Steinbeck’s Joads, as Mark Arax tells us in his book, “West of the West.” Only these Okies are brown. A single mother has crossed the border by foot and then raft and is now picking bell peppers outside Lamont, a town that has gone from all white to all brown in 30 years’ time. Before she earns a dime, she must pay off a $1,200 debt to the coyote, the trafficker of humanity who helped smuggle her over. “Why did you come?” Arax asks her. “For the future of my children,” she replies. Then she begins to cry because she has left them behind with her mother in their village in the Oaxacan highlands. In her journey, I hear the voice of my grandmother, Stella Florez, who arrived in this valley in the summer of 1927 and didn’t stop picking its grapes and cotton and potatoes and onions until 1968. I’d like to think there was something wishful in her decision to quit that year — the year of Cesar Chavez’s first hunger strike for La Causa.

Grapes are set out in the sun to turn into raisins in Arvin. Soon after, the big grape farmers of Delano found themselves signing their first contracts with Chavez’s United Farm Workers union. Si Se Puede (“Yes, it can be done”) became something more than a chant. Even as my grandmother made her children follow her into the fields to learn the dignity of hard work, she understood that education was the surest way out. Back in the 1960s, for a Mexican family living in a Mexican colony in the middle of California, the dream was a high school education. Her four children all graduated from Shafter High. My father, Ray, worked 35 years of his life at a plant in Bakersfield that made Styrofoam. His older brother, Robert, after returning from the war in Vietnam, worked at a cement plant in Riverside, unearthing the gravel that became Los Angeles’ sprawl. Grandma Stella was bedridden when I earned my bachelor’s degree from UCLA in 1987, the first of her grandchildren to graduate from a university. She insisted we film the ceremony in which I gave the graduation speech as the school’s first Latino student body president, and she must have shown that video to every nurse on the second floor of Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield as she lay dying. This summer, I find myself wondering what my grandmother would make of this new California: 38 million residents strong; $26 billion dollars in the hole; deep cuts to education and social service programs; the spectacle of big growers and poor farm-
workers, forever antagonists, marching arm-in-arm in a protest for more federal water, led not by a Cesar Chavez but by a comedian named Paul Rodriquez. My grandmother had a wicked sense of humor and could smell a rat from a mile away. As a young woman who had worked side by side with the cotton picking machine until it became good enough to replace her, she knew that no job in the fields was forever. She had seen enough booms and busts in the Golden State to know, too, that neither one lasted. In high and low times, frugality was a bottom line that should never be trifled with. Here in the big valley, the ceaseless reinvention that is California continues. On the east side, farmers are pulling out 10,000 acres of nectarines, peaches and plums — not because of drought or federal water going to fish, but because there is simply too much stone fruit to make a buck. On the west side, the big farmers have planted so many acres of almonds, pistachios and pomegranates — hearthealthy snacking, anti-oxidant drinking — that a new glut surely is in the making. One thing hasn’t changed. Over the next few weeks, the Mexican farm hands will walk into the fields at sunrise, pick 2 million-plus tons of Thompson seedless grapes and lay them down in the vineyard rows to bake into raisins. We remain the raisin capital of the world. — Dean Florez, D-Shafter, is the majority leader of the California State Senate.

Keeping score on our local youth, adult

New Web site will allow coaches, parents & players to share scores highlights and standings — From the blog of Olivia Garcia, vice resident of content for The Bakersfield Californian and its subsidiary, Mercado Nuevo, the publishing company of MÁS Magazine: he fall season arrives in a matter of days, but I am always reminded of it much sooner when my boys begin practicing for tackle football. Of course, I have plenty of friends and relatives who are feeling the same fall sports euphoria as their kids gear up for football, volleyball, soccer or they, themselves, play in an adult sports league. There’s a strong, loyal following behind many community youth and adult sports leagues in town. And I am hoping a newly created Bakersfield Web site will help support that following by allowing local sports teams, coaches, parents and players to share their accomplishments - scores, standings, highlights and more - with each other. The Web site: www.mybakersfieldsports.com is being sponsored by Mercado Nuevo and operated by Community Sports Desk, a national sports software and service company headquartered in Kenosha, Wis. We are one of about 50 newspapers nationally that has partnered with Community Sports Desk. There is no cost to join, just a desire to promote your athlete or league in a positive way. Advertising will support the site. The hope is to spotlight our local adult and youth athletes through the web site, with a possibility of running many of these contributions in other Mercado publications, such as MÁS Magazine or The Bakersfield Voice,

our citizen journalism product, or on The Bakersfield Californian’s community sports page. The Voice is published weekly and delivered to approximately 70,000 homes in the west side of town. In addition, there are a number of Voice rack locations, and it is also delivered to some elementary schools. Meanwhile, The Californian currently runs a community sports page on Tuesdays. On that page, we run announcements of upcoming team or league tryouts, registration information, results, calendar events and/or team and individual accomplishments from the community. The local sports information posted on MyBakersfieldSports.com will mainly come from coaches or team representatives. That brings me to my next point. Currently, we are looking for coaches, leagues, sports groups, parents or players who would like to participate in My Bakersfield Sports. The site is designed for a variety of sports. Community Sports Desk, along with some of our help, will host meetings to train interested groups and individuals on how to submit stories, photos, stats and more. Those interested are being asked to call Marisol Sorto at 661-716-8640 to be added to the community participant list. You can also e-mail her at: msorto@bakersfield.com and indicate “My Bakersfield Sports” in the subject line. Whether you are part of an adult track group, a youth soccer league or a community rec group, this site could be a great way to share your team’s information. October 4, 2009

Open for business! Despite tough economic times, Latino-owned operations find safe niche — thanks to customer service, cultural loyalty & ‘thinking outside la caja’
By Matt Muñoz MÁS staff
o coincide with the theme of our annual Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (KCHCC) issue, we’d like to share some useful insight on the current state of local Latino business. And in a struggling economy, it’s nice to finally offer up some good news! According to various news reports from around the nation, Latino-owned businesses seem to be feeling the least of the economy’s pressure — and local Latino businesses seem to be following this welcomed trend. Could it be our buying power? Cultural loyalty to our favorite establishment? Or maybe we appreciate good customer service? It could be a combination of those elements and more, experts contend. California in particular is in the middle of a serious economic crisis, while some states are pushing toward further growth. Here in Kern County, the local Latino business community is certainly not immune

from the tough economy, along with the many ripple effects that result from such conditions. But the outlook is positive. KCHCC Chairman Joe Jimenez, who by day works as director of marketing at Chain Cohn Stiles Group Law in Bakersfield, has seen the direct results of our struggling economy here in Bakersfield. Elaborating on what most Latino-American businesses presently face, he offers up some encouraging words in the mix. “The outlook for local Latino businesses is the same for most small businesses up and down the state ... tough, but worth fighting for!” he said. “Dimin-
ishing lines of credit and tighter financial procedures, particularly with loans, are making it tough for small businesses to survive in today’s economy.” The Salt Lake Tribune recently published a story on Tenochitlan Super Market, a Latino family-owned chain of stores, similar to Pro’s Ranch Markets so familiar to Kern County residents. In the article, the Campos family, who opened their first store in 1998, have grown to five stores total across the state and plan on moving into even bigger markets. The owners pride themselves on the catering to the ever-growing Latino population, offering bi-lingual
service on request. Now in 2009, they’re getting ready to expand again, despite the recession. As surprising as one might think, the Campos’ story is just one of a many examples of Latino entrepreneurship currently on the rise in a variety of industries. With that in mind, it perhaps it’s ludicrous to think California has been hit as hard as it is, considering our state businesses cater to the largest Latin population in the nation. Need an example? Look no further than the city of Bakersfield. With a population of more than 333,000 residents, 32 percent of that total comprised of Latinos, it should be no sur-

Kuka’s unique gift items that are hard to find and showcase la cultura. prise where local commerce (Latino and non-Latino) should re-focus — if they haven’t already. Jimenez goes onto stress the value of small, multi-service businesses in our community. “Individual entrepreneurship is on the rise. We are seeing an increase in individual ownership in the fields of insurance, real estate, financial investments, business services and marketing,” he said. Wendy Armijo of Armijo and Lopez advertising understands the importance of modifying marketing strategies, and going to “where the money is.” “I started my ad business to cater to Latino businesses,” said Armijo, who began her first advertising firm (Milan Advertising) in 1999, then joined forces with her current partner, Herman Lopez in 2002. “But now, many big businesses are cutting about 50 percent of their Latino marketing budgets. Yet, they’re still buying houses and cars.” Armijo bases much of her strategies on past experiences, and community “reality.” “Latinos are not your typical
stock market person, with money tied up in various ways,” she explained. “But the money is out there, depending on the service you provide.” One such success story is her agency’s relationship with the Little Caesar’s pizza chain, which experienced a huge rise in business after a new strategy was launched. “Little Caesar’s volume increased since last year,” she said of the immediate response to the pizza chain’s Latino marketing campaign that equaled out to a lot of “dough.” Literally. On another positive note, the business of fitness seems to be on the rise with dancing as a catalyst for better living. Angela Medina of Bakersfield has been conducting local “Zumba” fitness classes for the past year and a half at various locations all by herself. Catching one of the many Web infomercials with bodies dancing in motion, and offering weight loss in the process, Medina was immediately hooked on the product. “Watching the video inspired me to try it and get trained to become an instructor,” she said.
“I attended classes with a Zumba educator specialist in Santa Barbara for two days back in December 2007.” Zumba is an aerobic fitness program created by Colombian immigrant Beto Perez. After arriving in Miami 1999, he soon began marketing his salsa-fied, cumbia, merengue dance/fitness philosophy around the world. Now it’s gaining popularity in Bakersfield, and providing a new business opportunity for Medina. “This is for people who hate exercise, but love to dance and move,” she explained of her classes she teaches Monday through Saturday. “Our classes are very diverse, and Latinos especially will benefit from the results.” She said the results include, but are not limited to, energy — something Medina herself appreciates as a co-owner of Quiznos Sub Shop on Olive Drive. Along with her husband Hector, Angela keeps business moving, step by step. “My Zumba classes make people happy, and it helps keep me happy to help everyone at the shop, (Quiznos),”she said. Both-
Armijo and Medina’s stories offer just a couple examples of successful Latino business, some more traditional than others. After all, Latinos are not limited to restaurants — it’s best to “think out of the box.” But before you jump into the business arena, KCHCC Chairman Joe Jimenez offers some sound advice: “Do your homework before engaging into your new business. Research to ensure you have a demographic to target. Create a solid marketing plan and stick to it. Take advantage of social media (it’s cheap) and provide an honest and fair product and/or service to your customers,” he said. “And lastly, put something away for that ‘rainy day’ because many will attest it will be needed some day, perhaps sooner than you think.” Sources: U.S. Census study Salt Lake City Tribune On the Web: www.kernhispanicchamber.org www.armijoandlopez.com www.zumbafitnesswithangela .com October 4, 2009

WORKING Boron’s Domingo’s restaurant & its owner certainly have the
‘right stuff!’ By Dianne Hardisty Special to MÁS
BORON — n a hot summer day, you can hear the leaves crackling on the trees in Boron. It’s not just because the triple-digit heat shrivels up nearly everything it touches. It’s because little else is moving on the often deserted streets of this eastern Kern County community. But the town comes alive at 27075 Twenty Mule Team Road, the site of Domingo’s, a popular Mexican restaurant and watering hole for today’s “Right Stuff” aviation pioneers and space explorers. Inside you find Domingo Gutierrez greeting, teasing and doting over guests who may have driven for hundreds of miles to savor Domingo’s tacos, fajitas and enchiladas. But they aren’t coming just for the food. They are coming to enjoy Domingo — the restaurant and the man. Opening for lunch and closing long after dinner time, the booths and tables at Domingo’s regularly are filled by pilots and astronauts, military brass and enlisted personnel, and lots of Edwards Air Force Base families. The restaurant’s walls are lined with evidence of Edwards’ affection for Domingo’s and the restaurateur’s love of the military. Gutierrez has been likened to the legendary Pancho Barnes, whose “Happy Bottom Riding Club” was a hangout for early aviation pioneers who flew over the area. It now is a

His small restaurant has become the watering hole for today's space and aviation pioneers at Edwards AFB. tradition for shuttle astronauts to dine at Domingo’s just hours after landing at Edwards. Gutierrez, who holds the title of honorary commander of the Air Force Flight Test Center, greets the space travelers with “Boron water” — shots from his $150-a-bottle tequila. But Domingo’s is not exclusively a military haunt. Customers also work at the nearby borax mine and at the solar energy plant, six miles to the
east. Some call Boron their home. Others live in Lancaster, Palmdale, California City, Barstow and, yes, as far away as Bakersfield. The restaurant is listed on so many tourist and industry guides that it is common to find among the guests people from foreign countries. From Domingo’s 1,600square-foot, stucco-smeared building, the restaurant does a nearly $1 million a year business. The story of Domingo’s
success is a mixture of hard work, love and the grace of God. Oh yeah, and throw in some prayers to end a curse. At 47 years of age, Domingo Gutierrez stands a straight six feet one inch tall. His daily attire is a pressed shirt, dress trousers and a fashionable tie. Some might think Gutierrez is a bit overdressed for the hardscramble, desert mining town. But he explains his customers deserve his respect, good food
and clean service. It’s a formula that has worked at Domingo’s for two decades. Gutierrez’s customers are loyal and so is the team he assembled to serve them. Many of the waiters, cooks and dish washers have worked at Domingo’s for years. “You surround yourself with good people, treat them well and you will succeed,” he explains. It is a philosophy that has evolved as he has traveled his own difficult road to Boron. Fourteen years old and carrying his cousin’s “green card,” Gutierrez crossed into the United States with his brother. After living in Los Angeles for a short time, the pair moved to Lancaster, where his brother was hired to be a busboy in a Mexican restaurant. When Gutierrez was old enough to get a work permit in 1977, he hired on to wash dishes. Soon he became a busboy, then a waiter. A few years later, he was the manager of a Lancaster restaurant, supervising 38 employees. He opened a restaurant with a brother in Palmdale, but the arrangement soured and his brother bought him out. With the money from the sale, Gutierrez slid behind the wheel of his car and headed to Bakersfield. That was in 1988. “I prayed to God very hard,” Gutierrez recalls. As he passed through Boron, he picked up a copy of the Boron Enterprise. He read that a building on Twenty Mule Team Road was for sale. It was the fallout of yet another failed restaurant at that location. By now Gutierrez had become a U.S. citizen. He had 11 years of experience in the restaurant business. “I knew I would do well,” he recalls. Plunking down his buyout money for the building, he set about fixing it up and advertising for business. He spread the word to Edwards Air Force Base, the borax mine, around town and around other towns. And people came. On his first day, he did $1,100 in business. “There’s never been a dull moment since,” says Gutierrez, claiming running his restaurant is as much a hobby as it is a

livelihood. In that first month, he sold $40,000 in meals. “God has blessed me,” he says, smiling as he looks around Domingo’s dining room, waving at familiar faces. Indeed God has. And Gutierrez made sure of that. Before he opened for business, he invited a Catholic priest from his hometown in central Mexico to bless the building. “People said it had a curse.” Gutierrez and the priest prayed away the curse. For a short time, Gutierrez
parlayed his success to other cities. He opened a second restaurant in Tehachapi in 1990 and a third restaurant in Hesperia in 1991. But soon he realized he was spreading himself too thin. He sold those businesses to focus on Boron. “If you are going to do a job, do it right, or don’t do it,” he says. Most days you will find Gutierrez arriving at his restaurant in the morning and staying until evening. His trip home for a midday break is no big deal. He lives with his wife, Stacy,
and their three children, Domingo, 14, Victoria, 11, and Emilio, 9, in a large house across from the restaurant on Twenty Mule Team Road. Railroad tracks run in back of his yard. Rather than finding the clatter of cars and honking of horns an annoyance, it seems to be just another Boron peculiarity that Gutierrez has embraced in both his restaurant and his heart. Along a ledge that hugs the ceiling of Domingo’s dining room runs a G-gauge model railroad track. The engine pulls miniature cars, including one hauling borax and another hauling a space shuttle. The cars are gifts from friends and customers, switched out regularly for variety and to clean away the grease from the fajitas that sizzle on the tables below. Gutierrez clearly loves it all — the variety of his customers; the eclectic blend of military, mining and desert memorabilia that litters the restaurant’s walls; and his life in Boron. “It’s a good life here,” he says, pointing out that a person can easily drive to Las Vegas, Southern California, or the coast from Boron. Gutierrez has a bright yellow Hummer to make those trips. “It’s a good place to raise kids. It doesn’t have a lot of traffic.” Gutierrez is Boron’s honorary mayor. It’s a title bestowed in recognition of his fundraising for the community’s chamber of commerce. In addition to the restaurant, he also owns several rental homes and the car wash in Boron. “Anywhere you go, you can be positive or negative,” says Gutierrez, explaining his fondness for Boron. “It’s what you create.” He worries that children today will not have the same appreciation. “They don’t know what it’s like to have an empty stomach, to watch their parents farming from sun up to sun down. I knew there were opportunities in the United States, but I knew you had to work hard and earn them. “Nothing is perfect. But where there is a will, there is a way.” October 4, 2009

chamber events and ultimately help continue business services and networking opportunities for the KCHCC membership. Not only does Wells Fargo Bank support the chamber through financial contributions, but they also provide volunteers for various events throughout the year. Bonales currently serves as the treasurer for KCHCC. For the last five years, he has been instrumental in the success of the chamber, taking on leadership positions on the executive board. It is companies such as Wells Fargo Bank who support the chamber in order for KCHCC to provide business services, quality events, and networking opportunities. This allows the membership to grow and provide services to Hispanic businesses in the community. Our gratitude and appreciation goes to Wells Fargo Bank.

n a marketplace once dominated by vanilla and chocolate, the flavor team at Nestlé has answered an increasing demand for more exotic flavors with the launch of its new Nestlé Delicias line of paletas (frozen fruit bars) and helados (creamy frozen dessert). Originally developed for the Hispanic market, the unique flavors are being discovered by a growing segment of nonHispanic consumers looking for an innovative snacking experience. Lusciously creamy and refreshing with intense flavors and chunks of real fruit, Nestlé Delicias will delight taste buds as the temperature soars. Nestlé Delicias paletas offer a delicious alternative to the typical fruit bar and are available in a variety of tantalizing flavors. Satisfy your wanderlust with tropical flavors like Mango and Coconut, or discover the sweet/tart taste of Tamarind. Flavors also include: Pineapple, Strawberry, Strawberries & Cream, and Vanilla. In addition to a single snack size, select flavors are also available in multi-packs for the entire family to enjoy. Are you craving something creamier and scoopable? The Nestlé Delicias line also features quart-size helados, frozen dairy dessert in indulgent, Latin-inspired flavors. The tempting offering includes Mango, Coconut, Strawberries & Cream, Vanilla and two additional traditional Hispanic dessert flavors: Tres Leches (3 Milks Cake) and Arroz con Leche (Rice Pudding). “Generations of Americans have grown up with iconic ice cream treats from Nestlé,” said John Harrison, Official Taster for Nestlé Delicias. “The new Nestlé Delicias line of exotic flavors will tempt ice cream lovers of all ages who are hungry for something a little bit different.” The Nestlé Delicias brand is currently available in select markets nationwide. Letter from the chairman Dear Members and Friends, really big THANK YOU goes out to Jessica White at Edward Jones for stepping up and hosting our September Mixer with such a short notice, due to a last minute cancellation. Jessica and her staff did a wonderful job, and we really couldn’t have asked for any better hospitality than what she provided ... thank you, Jessica! In this edition of MÁS, you will find our current membership list. Peruse through the list and take advantage of the opportunity to contact a company or two and inquire about utilizing their services. Everyone needs a little help every now and then, so show your support to your fellow member sand give them a call today, as they may be in need of your services as well. TEE IT UP! On Friday, Oct. 23, the chamber will be hosting a golf tournament at Sundale Country Club with a shotgun start at noon. This will be a great day of fun with lots of networking and sponsorship opportunities to market your company. Be an “exclusive hole sponsor,” and showcase your goods and services to everyone on your hole. There are only 10 holes available for “exclusivity,” so don’t hesitate on this one! And if you just want to come out and have a good time, there are plenty of spots for that, too For more information about the golf tournament, call the chamber office today at 633-5495. Until next month ...
