O

ctober has been full of tricks and treats - and it's not even Halloween! This year's Burn the Witch IV art show, recently came under attack by some rather “mysterious forces” in the community.

Upon receiving the news of the vandalism you'll read about on pg. 7, I was truly shocked. In all my years as a musician in the community and as a fan of local art, this has never happened to my knowledge. This town loves noisy street corner Prop. 8 protests and things of that nature, but an art show? I've been privileged to know the ladies behind the annual Burn The Witch Art show since it's inception. Over the years we've developed a great relationship as colleagues and supporters of each other's work. Last year they graced the cover of Bakotopia, and this year they're back stronger than ever!

In the wake of all the damage and pain caused to everyone involved, we should all rally around the artists in this year's Burn The Witch IV. Please make plans to attend the show's opening on Oct. 17 and closing on Oct. 31 to show your love and support. Embrace the elements of change... Thanks to all of this week's contributors and advertisers!

Idol Letdowns During meet n' greets - sometimes being a band's biggest fan isn't enough to deter a rock star ego. By Miranda Whitworth, Bakotopia.com contributor t's amazing how a first meeting can forever influence your opinion of a person. The old saying, you never get a second chance to make a first impression is more true than we realize. Take my first meeting with Francis as an example. It was 4 years ago and I was just a lowly news reporter at Clear Channel. I had seen Francis around the building and decided to introduce myself while we were taking a break. I said “Hi, I'm Miranda Whitworth. What's your name?” At that point Francis, dressed as if he had just returned from a drum circle, introduced himself as Dr. David Banner (you know, from The Hulk). This was in front of five people who knew his true identity, yet insisted he was not an employee of KRAB, but in fact a respected member of the medical community. In my head I promised myself I would never speak to that man again. Fast forward four years I am now contractually obligated to talk to him, but things could be worse. I share this story because it's important to know that a fleeting moment between two people, whether it is between friends or an artist and a fan, can have quite an impact. I have been extremely lucky to introduce many KRAB listeners to musicians and song writers they adore and for the most part those experiences have been great. 3 Doors Down came to

I

Bakersfield two years ago and Francis and I had the opportunity to conduct a listener “meet and greet” with the band. The guys were extremely nice and bent over backwards to please their fans. They even invited us back to their dressing room, offered an interview and refreshments! I have to admit before we met the band Francis and I would occasionally bag on their music but from that point on we have thought very fondly of 3 Doors Down and will never say anything bad about them. The same can be said about bands like Flyleaf, Taking Back Sunday, Panic at the Disco and Rey Fresco. All were very accommodating and wanted to make sure the listeners and the staff at KRAB connected with them on a brief yet personal level. Unfortunately, the same is not so true for one of Bakersfield's biggest hometown acts - KORN. When KORN made their way to Bakersfield with the Family Values Tour in '07, we were excited to see them and so were the fans. But KORN didn't seem that excited to see us. Ok, I'm sure playing in your hometown can be exhausting - but between a less than friendly road manager and very key members of the band missing for the listener “meet and greet” we were left feeling a little bit slighted. I know that when it

comes to spending time with a national act you have to leave your expectations at the door, especially if you are a DJ. However, fans deserve a little more heart, especially if they are tried and true and from your own stomping grounds. The question now is can a band redeem itself? Jared Leto and 30 Seconds to Mars are on the brink of making good to their fans. While I love the music of 30 Seconds to Mars several self serious and rather rude interviews conducted with front man Jared Leto made me rethink my taste for the group. Leto did not hide his enormous ego during a '06 interview with Blender magazine in which he suggested he could never give up life in Hollywood because no other musician turned actor has accomplished his level of crossover success. I could name a few starting with Frank Sinatra and ending with Jack Black, but who is counting? Now Leto and Mars have a chance to make things right. After a long hiatus due to film scheduling and strife between band members they are finally releasing a new album. As a show of “thanks” for listeners patience, their new album art will include 2,000 pictures of their loyal fans. Will it be enough? I will wait until I shake Leto's hand in Bakersfield before I reevaluate my opinion. Stay up to date with all of the KRAB jocks at: www.KRAB.com. Listen for Matt from Bakotopia on the KRAB Morning Show every issue drop date. Next Appearance: Oct. 29 in the 9 a.m. hour!

Evil Dead The Musical makes its Bako run at The Spotlight thru October. By Jen Raven, Bakotopia.com contributor or the first time in almost seventeen years that I've known him, my husband was more excited to see a live stage show than I was. From the moment we heard 'Evil Dead the Musical' was coming to town, Todd was planning to attend. Todd has been an Evil Dead fan from the start. Myself; not so much. Horror movies have never been my thing. But I have to admit; after tonight, I'm definitely a fan of the musical; especially our own Spotlight Theatre's version. The script; funny! The actors; talented! The makeup; scary! The effects; gross! And the set itself was as entertaining and energetic as any of the singing, dancing 'deadites' in the cast, offering one inventive surprise after another (I won't spoil it by going into detail!). This show is rowdy, randy, and fast-paced. When five college students set out for a weekend in the woods, they accidentally unleash an Army of Darkness. The stage is soon covered with capering Canderian Demons, and the audience (in the first three rows, anyway) is soon covered with goo and gore (special ponchos are available for purchase before the show). Seating farther back is safely outside of the "splatter zone" but the effects are just as enjoyable from afar!

Above: A scene from Evil Dead The Musical at The Spotlight. Overall this production totally rocked, and not just in a totally 80's way (even if that is when the series first came out). It was obvious that everyone involved worked really hard, to pull out a brilliant show. I have to give kudos to the director, Jarred Clowes. Such a complex production might have crumbled under less skillful leadership; but this show came together like a deliciously gooey, if gorey, s'more. I could fill pages with high praise for the cast, and the crew. This show is an excellent example of what can happen when talented people work together toward a common goal. Bravo, all around. 'Evil Dead the Musical' has something for everyone, excepting small children: Parents, leave the kids at home! This sexy, highenergy romp has plenty of adult content, strong language, and some very convincing horror makeup effects, courtesy of Jennifer Sorkin. All in all, this was a thoroughly enjoyable night out, and worth every penny. Movie Screening Mission Let's get our own screening of 'Paranormal Activity' in Bakersfield for Halloween. By Cesareo Garasa, Bakotopia.com contributor ake one part "Blair Witch Project" one part "The Entity" and, what the heck, another part "The Exorcist" and you have the new underground movie phenomenon known as "Paranormal Activity". Filmed for $11,000 in the director's own home, this little film that could was originally released in 2007 where Dreamworks studios bought it with the plans of a rem-make. After screening it at Steven Spielberg's house where it, reportedly, scared him so bad he couldn't be left alone in the room (this is the same guy that made "Poltergeist" and "JAWS", the audience went nuts for it. It was decided to leave it as is and redo the ending (for the better - according to the director) and let Paramount do the releasing. It was recently screened last month at

T

Texas' Fantastic Film festival where the critics and audience were ecstatic about it, receiving it as one of "the scariest movies ever made" almost unanimously. The story is this: a couple think there's something haunting their house. The boyfriend gets a video camera and films as they sleep. It's filmed in a cinema verite style ala Blair Withc and Cloverfield but the bedroom scenes are filmed with the camera mounted in one spot and recording the ridiculously creepy stuff that happens. Little by little it goes from creepy to bugnuts terrifying! Instead of the usual way of distributing movies, Paramount is doing an online petition where the cities that demand it the most will get the movie. Every showing it's had since opening in 13 cities on September 25 (and 10 cities the week after), have been sold out quickly!

So, come on Bakersfield! Let's do this! How cool would it be to have an intense communal event where everyone is enjoying the movie and reacting in the same way: consistently on edge and, whenever the lights go out in the bedroom onscreen, going "Oh crap, here we go again"! After the movie is over, everyone will have a group "WTF"? moment. I have a feeling no one will be sleeping soundly after watching this film. Follow these instructions… Go to the film's official website: www.paranormalmovie.com Press the 'DEMAND IT' button. Last time I checked, we we're #40 as of October 2nd (YEAH!) but Fresno's #27. FRESNO?! C'mon! Don't let "Shelbyville" get it first, spread the word. Let's get in on the zeitgeist and give ourselves one HELL of a Halloween present. If you don't do this, may you have some paranormal activity of your own! Mwahaha!

Art Imitates Life In Bakersfield Did Burn The Witch IV stir up Salem-like hysteria among the townspeople before its art show opening? By Matt Munoz, Bakotopia Editor ocally-produced Bakersfield art show, Burn The Witch, featured in this issue of Bakotopia recently came under attack prior to its Oct. 17 opening. The following is a short recap of the unpleasant incident. The Incident: After preparing artwork displays for the upcoming Burn The Witch IV art show at the new Metro Special Events, 2801 F St., the week of October 1, BTWIV show curator Nyoka Jameson returned on Saturday, October 3, to find that some of the art show's pieces had been moved and vandalized. Shocked by what she found, she immediately contacted BPD to file a report and phone calls were made. Some of the show's expensive pieces were found damaged, placed in the restroom facility, and in some cases - gone missing. The Damage: According to the BPD police report filed by Jameson, total damage was estimated at over 2,600.00. Some of the pieces included small, coffin shaped

sculpture boxes made of wood, an 11"x14" framed piece, and a 6 foot sculpture. After being contacted, the artists were upset and angered. The following are portions of reactions by some of the artists whose art was involved in the attack. Artist Micky Piercy ("The Crucifixion of Mother Earth") "I knew my piece would be controversial. That was my intention. To me, the subject in question is the violation of our Earth ... But, I want people to understand what I meant by the title, "The Crucifixion of Mother Earth" is meant to be a parallel ... Christ was killed by his own people. Our Earth ... she's being killed, by her own people; we continue to pollute, knowing the damage we're doing ... and that's what I was trying to say. I never meant to be blasphemous or disrespectful of the Christian faith in any way. I was raised Pentecostal; I was raised in the church. And while I don't consider myself to be a 'Christian' I do have a profound respect for other people's religious beliefs. The title of this show totally fits; that's what they're trying to do, here; they're trying to burn

ntroduction ... As yet another amazing incarnation of c Burn the Witch draws near, I find myself W not only reminiscing on years past, but also t looking to the future. c If this empowering movement is to surs vive, we will continue to need new blood, each year. And, while it’s true that I continue a to slog through the trenches of our local arts b t scene, it’s important to remember that I’m s not alone. That’s especially crucial in this year; the fluctuating economy has been tough on the arts, everywhere. It would be easy to get discouraged, if not for the company I’m keeping. As it turns out, I’m in some pretty good company. I’d like to climb out of the trenches for a moment, and highlight four, among the many, who’ve worked hard to help create Burn the Witch IV. So much more than just pretty faces; the models in this year’s Above: Becky Osterdock promotional photos are strong, educated, and talented women. They, and others like h them, are the reason I continue to work for a t better arts community in Bakersfield; and I t am honored to stand beside them, as part of G this year’s Burn the Witch. Nyoka is enthusiastic about taking on the of challenge of creating this year’s Burn the elf Witch, though she does admit, “It turned out also to be a lot more work than I’d realized! But it’s all been worth it, and I want to continue to keep al arts this event alive. So, while I plan on serving as curator at least through BTW V, I do intend, someday, to hand it off to the next curator, just as Raven handed it over to me.” Nyoka would like to thank all the BTW artists and fans who volunteered their time to help bring this show to life, especially Robyn, Becky, and Destiny, who stayed until 4 a.m. with her, to complete the hang! sion to a Master’s program. This is Becky’s first year to be a part of Burn the Witch, but she did get to see the exhibit last year: “I was really impressed with the floor-to-ceiling artwork. Just walking through the gallery inspired me to paint.” Becky’s latest oils-on-canvas series of masks will be on display at this year’s exhibit; “I’ve just finished some paintings that I’ve been working on for nearly two years. They will finally be unveiled at Burn the Witch IV.” Becky works with ceramics, as well, and she is skilled with pastels; she’s participated in Via Arte for three years; this will be her fourth. In last year’s Via Arte, she won first place for original artwork; the year before she won third place for a reproduction. Becky is good friends with fellow artists Nyoka, Destiny, and Robyn, so she really enjoyed working on the promotions for this year’s event. “The photo shoots were so much fun! And I’m honored to be a representative for Burn the Witch, in Bakotopia magazine. I’m so proud to be doing something in support of the women artists in our city.” Becky also adds that she’s excited for all the free classes BECA offers the men and women artists in our community; “It’s so important to continue educating ourselves on what's happening with contemporary art, today. The classes and field trips to galleries, inside and outside of Bakersfield, will be so valuable for our local emerging artists.”

Destiny Pledger (BTW IV newcomer) Age: 27 AA in Psychology from Bakersfield College, working on her BA in Psychology from CSUB. This is Destiny’s first year with Burn the Witch. She was encouraged to join our movement by Robyn Lace; “Robyn had seen some of my work, and commented on how it was good, and it ought to be shown. But, aside from having some of my student artwork on display at Bakersfield College, I’ve never actually been part of an arts exhibit; I’d never considered my masks and costumes to be ‘art’ before talking to Robyn and Nyoka ... I just enjoyed creating new costumes as a hobby. Working with other women artists has helped me to form a different opinion, about what I do.” Destiny is a skillful costumer, and also creates some pretty amazing leatherwork masks. “All my dresses for the show are made from my own patBurn the Witch IV ~ terns. Scariest story ever? Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” continues to stun new generations of readers By Greg Goodsell, Bakotopia contributor hen Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery” was first published in The New Yorker back in 1948, it created a bang wallop. Furthermore, when it is read by adolescents today - even after being assailed by the most extreme imagery the mass media can dish out to them - it still creates quite the horror. A perennial staple of Southern California high Shirley Jackson schools, few things are quite as satisfying as seeing supposed jaded teenagers looking up after reading the story with stunned expressions on their faces. “The Lottery” does have antecedents in literature. Set in an unspecified American town, the story calls to mind the small-communities-with-a-large-secret-to-hide as penned in the works of Nathaniel Hawthorne and H. P. Lovecraft. Nothing “supernatural” whatsoever occurs in the story, which only adds to its power. The plotting is methodical and bone-dry. Members of a small town gather in the main square for the annual lottery, and the ritual is played out with a routine precision.

W

When “The Lottery” was first published, Jackson and The New Yorker received tons of hate mail. Many condemned the story, about a barbarous custom to be “sadistic, violent and modern.” Since the horror genre relies heavily on shock and transgression, these accusations can be viewed as a back-handed compliment to the story’s power. “The Lottery” has a local connection as well. In 1969, a short film version of the story for Encyclopedia Brittanica was filmed on location in the city of Taft. Viewable at YouTube.com, the classic short was reportedly one of the most indemand short films in public schools in the 16mm era. Author Shirley Jackson, America's preeminent female author of horror fiction is perhaps best known for her 1959 novel “The Haunting of Hill House” which was adapted for film twice, with varying degrees of success. Jackson, who passed away in 1965 at the age of 48, was a singular and remarkable woman. Owning a voluminous collection of books on witchcraft and black magic, not a single supernatural element was to ever waft into any of her stories. Even “Hill House,” a traditional ghost

story, can be explained away as the imaginings of a neurotic heroine. Her small New England town that figures in “The Lottery” may have been shaped by the fact that she lived most of her life in rural New Hampshire, her husband and four children the only educated intellectuals in a community of hard scrabble farmers. Jackson has since been lauded as the one author most attuned with America’s cold war anxieties, addressing the fears of a nation confronted with the harsh realities of the atom bomb and the concentration camp. Whatever the case, Jackson was acutely aware of the petty jealousies and isolations of the American mindset. In a debt of gratitude to the creator of the first truly modern horror story, Stephen King dedicated his novel “Firestarter” thusly: “In memory of Shirley Jackson, who never needed to raise her voice.” If you haven’t read Jackson’s short story, do so immediately. Resisting pat and glib interpretation, “The Lottery” continues to shock and horrify readers more than 50 years later. The story’s overriding message to this writer, it would appear to be that evil is the most potent when served in the guise of unthinking tradition. Back To Smoke You Out! Herb aficionados rejoice - Cypress Hill's biggest party returns Oct. 23-24. By DJ Mikey, Bakotopia.com contributor ack in '98, legendary hip-hop group Cypress Hill introduced the wildly successful “Smoke Out” - a celebration of music and the marijuana culture. After a six year absence, the festival is back for a mind blowing experience you won't forget or leave you a little fuzzy. The two day festival kicks off Friday, October 23rd and runs through Saturday, October 24th at the San Manuel Amphitheater in San Bernardino, Ca.

B

“We've pulled out all the stops for this year's festival. It's going to be the comiccon of cannabis”!, said promoter Chang Weisburg of Guerilla Union. This year's festival is bigger than ever. Performances include a crossover bongload of acts like: Slipknot, Deftones, Cypress Hill, Method Man & Redman, Bad Brains, Penny wise and much more. But it's the reunions that are getting everyone buzzing. Rap groups - Goodie Mob and the Geto Boys are back together with all original members set to hit the stage. Also a very special performance by Sublime will be on hand, minus late lead-vocalist Bradley Nowell who passed away in '96. Filling in for Nowell is new lead singer, “Rome”, who looks to keep the Sublime blunt burning brightly. In addition to music, a medical marijuana

expo will also take place to help expand showgoers knowledge about the multi-million dollar hemp industry. Expert discussion panels, Smoke Out glass art showcases, a vendor village and even massive munchie gardens will be at your disposal and don't forget about 4:20 movie night (Friday only) showcasing “How High” and Cheech & Chong's “Nice Dreams”. Did I forget to mention that Cheech & Chong will be your hosts? Bring your Visine, your appetite, and some earplugs - it's gonna be a long weekend in the desert!
