‘Mindfulness’ is a required test-taking skill

I

n this age where standardized tests determine so much, teaching test-taking skills is increasingly important. We could practically fill libraries with the many approaches on how to be a better test taker but, for simplicity, I bring it down to one word: mindful-

ness. When taking any test, stop and be aware — in the moment — of what you’re doing: no rushing, and no anticipating the next question, the next reading passage, or the next equation. Just be right in the test-mode. Now granted, I’m a huge advocate of process of elimination, marking the text, and pre-reading questions — but all those approaches require mindfulness. If anything, I find myself on hyperspace when working on a test. I find the answer and move on — not the best practice if the task was to find Education columnist

PEGGY DEWANE-POPE

THE BEST answer. Because of my own weakness I always tell my students, “Speed is not an indication of intelligence so TAKE YOUR TIME!” My own son took the high school exit exam years ago and was one of the last students to finish. I talked to the counselor proctoring, or watching over students, and she told me in a rather surprised tone, “I looked it over when he was finished and it looked like he did a great job.” Yup, he’s one of those mindful people who makes sure he is thorough and gets everything done to the best of his ability. When it comes down to it, I can sit around and complain about the focus of one test given annually determining a child’s success, a teacher’s success, and a school’s success but the fact is, that’s the nature of our culture right now. So, I embrace the challenge of working hard to make sure our students do their best possible work — and that requires mindfulness. Peggy Dewane-Pope is a teacher at Stonecreek Junior High School which experienced tremendous growth in the California Standards Test this year.

Congrats to Triple Play for a well-played tournament

T

riple Play was originally organized in 1999 by head coach/manager Darrin Dickey, and consisted of 8-year-old boys (including son, Josh Dickey) who continued to play together until they began high school baseball. Those 8-year-old boys are now 19 and 20 years old playing baseball in college — with one player being drafted into the major leagues. Head coach Darrin Dickey recently put together a new Triple Play team for his 8-year-old son, Kaleb. The new team began practicing together about four months ago. They have played in three 10-and-under tournaments and are currently playing in a 12-and-under local club league. As you can imagine, they’ve gotten beat most of the time playing against much older kids. Recently, Triple Play traveled to Ventura and played in a 9-and-under tournament. They finally got a chance to see what it was like to play against boys their own age. The team went undefeated the first day sending them straight to the, championship game. Their two wins on the Saturday before was enough to send them home with smiles on their faces — so you can imagine the excitement in their hearts when they received Championship trophies after run-ruling the Ventura Batbusters 14-4 in four innings. Congratulations to Triple Play for a well-played tournament. May this be the beginning of many more victories!
