he Second annual RJ’s Winter Golf Classic, benefiting the Kern Secret Witness Program, will be Saturday, Nov. 14 at 8 a.m. at The Links at Riverlakes, 5201 Riverlakes Drive. Shotgun start will be at 9 a.m. The Kern Secret Witness Program was formed as a public benefit, nonprofit corporation in 1982. It is a collaborative effort between law enforcement and the community to involve the public in the criminal justice system by removing the fear of reprisal for assisting law enforcement. This is guaranteed by insuring that those who provide information will never be identified by the secret witness program. The proceeds of the RJ’s Winter Golf Classic all go directly to the Kern Secret Witness Program. The money raised by the RJ’s Winter Golf Classic
will supply the reward money available for those who provide information that leads to the arrest and conviction of suspected persons. This program is administered by the Secret Witness Board of Directors and all funding for the program comes from public donations. The California Highway Patrol, Bakersfield Police Department and the Kern County Sheriff’s Department support the Kern Secret Witness program and recognize it as a valuable tool to help solve crimes and apprehend wanted persons. Call 587-4729 for more information on registration, sponsorship opportunities, raffle prizes and contests, the barbecue at RJ’s following the tournament or to make a donation to the Secret Witness Program. Entry deadline is Nov. 2. For the 24 Hour Anonymous Hotline, call 322-4040 or go to: www.kernsecretwitness.com.

What are YOU thankful for? Get that perfect fall photo BY BARBARA BUTLER Community contributor

all is upon us and a wonderful, easy way to create a fall photo is to visit your local grocery store. Most of our stores carry fresh, inexpensive flowers, as well as miniature pumpkins, Indian corn, candy corn and gourds. All perfect fall photo props! You can shoot outside in the shade or inside next to a north facing window. Go in for a nice tight shot, so that a lot of background is not visible. Try different angles and heights. Don’t be afraid to shoot at the same level as the arrangement. Just realize more background will show. An easy fix is to use push pins and put a piece of material or even a piece of scrapbooking paper on the wall behind the arrangement. Even though the Bakersfield area is not known for its fall color, don’t let that stop you. Our local streets and mountains offer wonderful photo opportunities. Gosford Road, between White Lane and Stockdale Highway, the Old Stockdale area and the Oleander area instantly come to mind, as well as the Kern Canyon, Lake Isabella, Glennville and Tehachapi. So grab your camera, and have some fun. No matter what physical limitations you may have, there is a style of photography for you! — Barbara Butler is the owner of FireCreek Photography and a member of Kern Photography Association.
