Furry friends help ‘Mutts’ advocate turn life around BY HILLARY HAENES Community contributor
A
fter a near-death experience battling end-stage liver disease, Zach Skow fought hard to recover. With the help of furry, four-legged friends, Zach turned his life around for good. At 33, Zach is the executive director of Marley's Mutts Dog Rescue — a nonprofit organization in Tehachapi that saves dogs that have been abandoned, lost, neglected, discarded or abused. Without care, these dogs would otherwise be euthanized if taken to an animal shelter. “I am just trying to inherently help the community to not have strays euthanized,” Zach said. He is striving to shift the paradigm in Kern County so pet owners consider their dogs as part of the family, instead of as property. Looking at Zach now, you never would have guessed that five years
ago his complexion was yellowed and bruised, and his stomach severely swollen. He was too sick for a liver transplant and was fighting for his life, trying to defeat alcoholism that began in his teenage years. “I wanted to kill myself,” he said. “(But) I knew the difference between right and wrong, and I knew how to love people.” Ultimately, this progressive illness shifted, and Zach’s health started to improve. He was lifted from this dark place and felt lucky to be alive, he said. During his recovery, Zach’s doctors recommended exercise, and he started a routine that included waking up at 5 a.m. each morning to walk with his dad’s adopted dogs — Marley, a Rottweiler-pit bull mix, and Tug, a Labrador mix. He would then go back to bed, get up to walk the dogs again, sleep and eat. Eventually, Zach became stronger, please turn to ZACH / PAGE 2

Medina teamed with PBA member Marty Deh, of San Jose. Although they struggled after the first game, Medina said they “never lost confidence in each other,” and went on to win this event, which drew 58 doubles teams from the western region. Other Bakersfield bowlers who competed were Zack Newman, Kiel Jordan and Damon LaBlue.

one of us actually want to eat a meal with the intentions of overeating, but sometimes, it’s hard not to. We eat if everyone else is eating. We see a commercial on TV about pizza, so we get hungry. We eat when we’re alone, upset or in a good mood. Alwyn Cosgrove wrote in “The New Rules of Lifting” that “if mindless emotions leads to an energy surplus, it seems logical that stopping to think before you eat is the path to an Fitness columnist energy deficit.” Any diet or eating plan that gives you a firm set of rules with a list of do’s and dont’s should help you manage your calories. The rules still have to make sense, and they still have to
allow enough food to avoid the kind of intense hunger that will derail any diet. Most important, though, they have to leave you with enough energy to do your workouts and function at your job. I like to tell my female clients who want to lose body fat to eliminate 250 calories per day from their diet. Males should eliminate 400. Zach has also partnered with Bakersfield’s Homeless Center, The Mission at Kern County, local rotary clubs and schools. To celebrate five years being sober, Zach trained for the Chicago Marathon which was held on Oct. 13. Even though he isn’t a runner, Zach chose to tackle this challenge to encourage others that they can do anything they set their mind to. He took it a step further by fundraising for Miracle Mutts — a program that combines dog rescue and rehabilitation with drug and alcohol addiction recovery with The Mission at Kern County. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 physically and mentally, and the short walks turned into three-mile runs. Only six months into sobriety, Zach founded Marley’s Mutts in May 2009 with motivation from his dad. Since then, Marley’s Mutts has rescued about 700 dogs with the help of the Tehachapi Veterinary Hospital that let Zach board dogs for free, and gave him discounts on treatments. Zach turned to dogs because they didn’t judge him, he said, and he saw that they needed saving, too. “It’s all about giving back to the dogs,” he said. “They helped save me.” Zach enjoys his new lifestyle because, not only does he get to be outside with the dogs, but he’s socializing with people. "I used to be afraid of that. I always thought I needed alcohol or drugs to be around people." Clearly, Zach doesn’t have a problem interacting with strangers anymore. He was interviewed for The Oprah Magazine, has appeared on
