Simple, effective ‘RULES’ help you decide what to eat
W
hy has eating become so complicated? What seems like a no brainer (broccoli vs. Twinkie) has most of us asking doctors, nutritionists, the government (food pyramids) — and even the media — for guidance and advice on what to eat, how much to eat and even when to eat it! I am definitely no expert in this field but I came across a book titled “FOOD RULES” that keeps it short and simple for me — and I hope it helps my readers too. According to the author, Michael Pollan, here are some simple but effective tips when deciding what’s right, wrong or in-between: 1. Avoid food products containing ingredients a third-grader cannot pronounce (monosodium glutamate.) 2. It’s not really food if it arrived through your car window (high fat, high sodium.) 3. Don’t eat breakfast cereals that change the color of your milk (Fruit Loops, Cocoa Puffs.) 4. Don’t ingest foods made in
places where everyone is required to wear a surgical cap (makes me suspicious.) 5. Eat only the foods that will eventually rot — real food is alive. The more processed a food, the longer the shelf life — with the exception of honey; it has a shelf life measured in centuries. 6. Get out of the supermarket when you can — you won’t find hydrogenated oils at the Farmer’s MarFitness columnist ket, or lists of unpronounceable ingredients — or best of all, foods from far, far away! 7. Don’t get fuel for your body the same place your car does — well, maybe milk and water. Gas stations have become “over-processed, high

fructose corn syrup stations” complete with hefty 32 oz. cup sizes. DON’T EAT THERE! 8. Eat more like the Italians. Or the French. Or the Japanese. Or the Greeks! Typical Western diets can be defined as a diet consisting of processed foods and meats, lots of added fat and sugar, everything BUT vegetables, whole grains and fruits — and many of the folks who eat this way suffer from Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Four of the top 10 killers in America are chronic diseases that are linked to this type of diet. 9. Remember, the BANQUET is the “first bite,” no other bite will taste as good as the first, and every subsequent bite will diminish in satisfaction! 10. Just eat real food — easier said than done — and I know that but, try to avoid industrial novelties that contain so many chemical and additives that it doesn’t deserve to be called FOOD! ith Republicans on the precipice of taking control of the House of Representatives, California Congressmen Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) and Devin Nunes (R-Visalia) will give their thoughts on the just concluded election today. Billed as “Reflections on the Election,” the event will be held at Russo’s Books at 1 p.m. and will feature a public comments forum for both congressmen to offer their interpretation of the election results, as well as where we as a nation go from here.

CSUB announces new partnership with Stockdale Junior Tennis Academy Small Business Development Center
a ‘grand slam’ for young players FROM WWW.MYBAKERSFIELDSPORTS.COM Some kids come to the Stockdale Junior Tennis Academy with no experience and perhaps not even a racket. Others want to improve their game enough to make their middle school or high school team. Still others wish to compete in USTA-sanctioned events throughout California which can open the doors to potential college scholarships. Regardless of their motivation, kids from 4 to 18 can benefit from the training and competition offered at the Academy, which in the last several years has seen significant growth in the number of its participants. “We launched the Academy in 2007, and within six months we had gone from fewer than 20 kids to over 150,” said Director Greg Bolitsky, a former head pro at the USTA National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y. “We dropped the rates, started a tournament travel team, gave scholarships to deserving kids from around the community and promoted the program in the media. “We give out between $5,000 and $8,000 a year in scholarships, and our tournament training team travels every month to a different club or academy all over southern and central California. The Academy offers a Pee Wee program for ages 4 to 8, Smashers for 8 to 10, Future Stars and the tournament training program.” In addition, the Academy hosts four junior tournaments per year

that are sanctioned by the USTA, including two sponsored by McDonald’s. The McDonald’s Junior Tournament Series will continue Nov. 19-21 at the Academy, which features nine courts. This year Hurley sponsored a series of four separate tournaments which attracted more than 200 junior competitors. “We’ve found that if you keep the price of tennis affordable to just about everyone and therefore open the game up to the whole community, you’ll get a lot more people involved,” Bolitsky said. “With tennis, all you need is a court and one other person. It’s not like some other sports where you need a full team and a lot of equipment. “Playing tennis with children the same age and at the same approximate skill level is a whole sociological transformation for some of these kids. And some of them really
develop into good players. We’ve got the No. 1 and No. 2 players in the county in our 10 and unders, as well as a 16-year-old boy whose USTA ranking is in the top 30 in southern California.” Bolitsky said that when professional players come to the Stockdale Country Club to compete in the annual Bakersfield Pro Grass Court Championships, it has a profound effect on the kids. “It inspires the kids to see professionals play in their town,” he said. “It makes them say, ‘That’s what I want.
