Local students to perform Dickens’ ‘Christmas Carol’ BY ALICIA HAMMONS Community contributor

F

ruitvale Junior High's advanced drama class will perform its sixth annual production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 in the school’s multi-purpose room, at 2114 Calloway Dr. Dickens wrote “A Christmas Carol” primarily to address the poverty of England’s poor. At the time, many were trying to make the bakers close their shops on Sundays. This infuriated Dickens because many poor families took their Sunday meals to the bakers to be roasted. Closing the shops would deprive many of their only hot meal of the week. In addition, most funerals at this time were for children under the age of 10. Those that did survive grew up poor without an education, and forced to continue the cycle of poverty.

Many of Dickens’ characters in the novel were based on his real-life family members, including his sister, Fan, and her crippled son. “A Christmas Carol” tells the story of a mean and bitter miser, Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge is not sensitive to the plight of the poor and doesn’t care about anyone but himself. In the course of one night, he is visited by his former business partner and three other spirits who try to urge Scrooge to become a better man, and to care for others. Prices are $6 for adults, $4 for children and students. In the spirit of this great tale, and to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry this holiday season, we are asking everyone who attends to bring one can of soup for a soup drive. A $1 discount will be given to each person who brings in a can of soup the night of the performance (limit one discount per person).

Deep Dish Combo • Deep Dish Any One Topping • One 2 liter soft drink • One 8 piece order of Crazy Bread • Order of Crazy Sauce

Eve Selis to perform Christmas album

QUALITY! QUALITY! D I D Y O U K N O W T H AT ?

BY PHILLIP SCOTT Community contributor

S

tart your holiday season with a performance by Eve Selis at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Rabobank Arena, 1001 Truxtun Ave. Selis, singer and emotion transducer, is back on the local stage by popular demand and with a new Christmas album on the charts. Purchase tickets for your friends and family to attend this special Christmas season concert: adult tickets are $25, and student tickets are $10. Pre-concert music will be performed by the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District’s strolling strings. The visual and performing arts coordinator is Amy McGuire. Directors are Regina Pryor, Audrey Boyle, Annaliese Perone and Teresa Rizo. As a winner of seven San Diego Music Awards in Americana and Adult Alternative categories, Selis is no stranger to roots music. Her newest album, Family Tree, features 14 sturdy tracks drawn from the dark, rich soil of American music. From the swamp-rock of “Rubber and Glue,” to the plaintive country heartbreaker “Don’t You Feel Lonesome,” to Leonard Cohen’s majestic masterpiece “Hallelujah,” Selis and her band dug deep to create a towering opus of interconnected musical branches, all dripping with Selis’s indelible “honey chipotle” voice.

Eve Selis will perform her new Christmas album Dec. 8 at Rabobank Arena.

“This CD sums it all up for me,” Selis said. “I got to explore all the different styles of music I love. I got to co-write with all my favorite songwriters (Marc Intravaia, Kim McLean, Calman Hart, Rich Wiley, Doug Crider). I got to sing wonderful songs about the things that mean the most to me — loss and love, sadness and joy, hardship and triumph, faith and family. I got to record with the best band in San Diego, with the best studio team I’ve ever worked with … I couldn’t be happier about this CD.” For more information and to obtain tickets, go to bakersfieldcca.org.

Words for thought: Sharon Martinez BY SHARON MARTINEZ ou have to live by faith each day. Here today but could be gone by tomorrow. Never ever take another person for granted. How much protein should young athletes consume?

P

rotein is the supplement of choice for many high school athletes in Bakersfield and Kern County. Why? Protein falls within the guidelines of both high school and NCAA regulations, and is also an easy way to improve recovery, as well as add muscle and strength. But how much do high school athletes really need? There are differing methods for determining how many grams of protein people need based on their weight, lean mass and Columnist other metrics. But that still leaves athletes counting calories. And as I’m sure I don’t have to let you know, youth athletes and high school kids aren’t going to be counting calories any time soon. So they generally take the “more is better” approach. This isn’t unique to Bakersfield — it’s high schoolers around the world! However, this strategy can lead to a lot of stress on the liver and kidneys, as well as other dietary issues

such as constipation and blood acidosis. A better way to make sure athletes are getting enough protein is the Precision Nutrition way. We recommend two fists of meat and protein dense foods with each meal for men, and one fist for women. Make a fist and hold it up. That’s how much protein/meat female athletes need. Guys, hold up your other fist too. This is how much you need. Now, some parents might hold up their hands and say, “This is way too much protein for my kids!” True, that would be too much for your kids. But go hold up your kid’s hand. A bit smaller, eh? That’s the beauty of using your hand as a measuring device: it’s customized to their size! Younger athletes under the age of 12 will each need about one palm of protein for both boys and girls. Prior to age 12, there isn’t much of a difference in protein needs between boys and girls. Aaron Gillies is a certified nutrition coach with Precision Nutrition and sports performance coach. He helps clients to improve health and sports performance by making small progressive changes to improve not only performance, but health and appearance as well. About Sharon Martinez I moved to Bakersfield in February 1991, and became a widow within two weeks, with five children to raise. I did not know a living soul in town, but by the grace of God, I met wonderful people — great people to help me on my journey here is Kern County. Bakersfield the best kept secret. I’ve worked as a teacher’s aide for Mercy Child Care Center. I opened my own alteration, tailor shop. I became the top salesperson for the late city hostess Dotti Hiatt. I opened Bakersfield Welcome Service. I got my real estate license in 2005. I am a realtor, a member of Bakers-
