Angie and Rafael Guijarro are the dynamic CrossFit duo behind CrossFit Frenzy in Bakersfield.

Bakersfield couple join forces in fitness ‘frenzy’ COURTESY OF B WELL ver since the CrossFit craze hit Bakersfield, Angie and Rafael Guijarro have led the charge to be healthy and active at their gym CrossFit Frenzy. The gym opened in March 2011 and has developed quite the following over the past four years. The Guijarros originally discovered CrossFit after getting bored with their normal workouts. As they raise their two daughters, Gabriella, 11, and Sofia, 8, the couple is on a mission to prove that any type of person can do these challenging workouts — and see results. Rafael, 40, moved to the U.S. when he was 18 years old after growing up in Caracas, Venezuela, and becoming a Venezuelan National swimmer. He was also a Division II collegiate swimmer here in Bakersfield. CrossFit is a huge part of his life and he recently competed in the 2014 CrossFit games in the Mens’ Masters Division. When he’s not in the gym, Rafael loves spending time with his family and catching up on episodes of

E

“The Voice” and “The Walking Dead.” “Anyone can do CrossFit with the right coaching and programming, and you will surprise yourself with what you can do,” Rafael Guijarro said. Angie, a 39-year-old Bakersfield native, deemed herself a “college nomad” after attending two junior colleges and three universities. Luckily, she ended up at Cal State Bakersfield at the same time as Rafael. Angie loves to travel, and, “as a young adult, I would drop anything for a good adventure,” she said. Angie caught the CrossFit bug and now adheres to the paleo diet along with her husband. She also enjoys a good glass of wine and an episode of “Scandal.” “Members at my gym don’t know this, but they inspire me on a daily basis,” Angie said.

Unlocking the mysteries of LEED COURTESY OF KERN GREEN ore and more businesses are choosing to operate with sustainability in mind — meaning more and more sustainability-related terminology is making its way into the vernacular. Terms like “green,” “high-efficiency,” and “zero waste” are tossed around in news, magazines, and even day-to-day conversation. While some of the terminology is selfexplanatory, some remains only vaguely familiar. Girl Scout cookie sales go digital BY JORDAN KING Community contributor

T

his Girl Scout Cookie season, hungry shoppers will be able to purchase cookies in a way they never could before — digitally! Girl Scouts of Central California South are participating in Digital Cookie, a revolutionary, new national digital platform that lets girls take cookie orders from customers through a unique transaction application, designed specifically for Girl Scouts. In today’s fast-paced online world, Digital Cookie represents the next evolution of the iconic Girl Scout Cookie Program, adding a digital layer that broadens and strengthens the five skills girls learn — goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics — while introducing modern elements like using online applications and conducting e-commerce. A majority of the 112 local Girl

Scout councils nationwide are participating in Digital Cookie in the 2014– 2015 cookie season, with additional councils expected to be on board by the end of 2015, using an updated version 2.0. Digital Cookie strengthens, expands, and enhances the Girl Scout Cookie Program by combining the values and lessons of door-to-door and booth sales with crucial 21st century business and entrepreneurial skills, continuing Girl Scouts’ long tradition of preparing today’s girls to be the female leaders of tomorrow! Girl Scouts will have their own individual page to manage and sell cookies beginning February 1 when the official cookie season kicks off. Cookies will be sold through March 22. For more information, visit girlscouts.org/digitalcookie. You may also contact Jordan King, communications manager, at jking@girlscoutsccs.org
