’ve had way too much coffee today. As I write this, I’m shaking with too much caffeine-induced energy. It’s Monday, and if you’re like me, you stop by your favorite java joint to get your fix. Jennifer and the gang at the Filling Station downtown always hook it up, and they’ve got these de-lish coconut pineapple muffin tops. Oh man, you must try them. Over the Jan. 10 weekend, I checked out three cool Bako events - LaughterComedy at The Empty Space, Sunday Snake Oil at Fishlips, then on Sunday I attended my first beer pong tourney back at Fishlips. Bakersfield was seriously buzzin’! The comedy show was packed out, and the laughs were splendid! Bravo, Bakersfield! Sunday Snake Oil’s crowd showed off some crazy dance moves, but the best part was watching the singer stomp his boots to get the drummer to speed up on AC/DC’s “Highway To Hell.” I only laugh because I’ve been that singer stomping his foot before - come on, Cesareo! Haha … Sunday afternoon’s PONG661 beer pong tourney took me over the edge. The place was jumpin’, the brew was flowin’, and these peeps were really into it! I have tons of pix and video posted at: www.bakotopia.com, so after you read this - go check ‘em out online at our Snap galleries. Then you'll soon understand why I need coffee this morning. Thanks to all of this week’s contributors, and our fantastic advertisers for keeping us free for you and yours. Show them some love by stopping and spending some dough to help the economy - and tell them Bakotopia sent you!

SAVING ABLE

ReturnofRock Avenged Sevenfold, Buckcherry & more live Feb. 2 - win free tix! By Matt Munoz, Bakotopia Editor akersfield is about to get a much needed dose of rock melodic, riff ready and guaranteed to make your head bang in delight. A rowdy bill that includes rock radio regulars - Avenged Sevenfold, Buckcherry, Papa Roach and Saving Abel - will be coming to the Rabobank Convention Center 6 p.m., Monday, Feb. 2. Co-headlining with Buckcherry, Huntington Beach’s Avenged Sevenfold returns after a two-year Bako absence (the band’s last time performing locally was with Coheed & Cambria in ‘06). This time around, the group is touring as part of the “4 Bands For Under 40 Bucks” tour. With a hit self-titled CD and a live DVD “Live in the LBC,” the band is sure to remind music listeners that the live rock experience isn't dead. If you remember, Buckcherry

B

graced the Jerry’s Pizza basement sometime during the 2000s in the tradition of artists who’ve performed the arena circuit. Hey, Weezer played Jerry’s too, so don’t laugh - look at ‘em now! That’s what makes them so cool rock, no matter what your situation is. For that, Buckcherry, you get mad kudos from Bakotopia. Speaking of a flashback, what up with Papa Roach? I saw them for the first time when my band Mento Buru opened up for them and local band, Juice, at Rockin’ Rodeo before they were signed. Next thing you know, they were all over MTV and headlining the VANS Warped Tour (remember that, DJ Mikey)? Papa Roach has come a long way since being a local band from Vacaville, Calif. I think I can remember when one of the guys was dating Steven Tyler’s daughter

(not Liv, they weren’t that popular) on MTV Cribs and when singer Coby Dick was voted one of rock’s ugliest men of rock on VH-1. Man, that would suck, especially when you consider you’re in the company of Lemmy from Motorhead and Shane McGowan of The Pogues - yikes! If you notice, Coby and the rest of Papa Roach have gone from looking like skater dudes to bonafide rock gods with cool hair, sleeve tats and lots of black - big-time makeover in the name of all things rock. Rounding out the bill are the pride of Corinth, Miss., Saving Abel. Their hit singles, “18 Days” and “Addicted,” have become

radio staples on KRAB. If you haven’t heard either yet, cruise around in your ride for about 30 minutes, one of them are sure to land in rotation. No matter what side of music you are on, rock, emo, hip-hop or country, you can’t deny the live music experience, and this show has it all. And if you think you aren’t pretty enough to rock out with the best of 'em, just take a look at these bigtimers, there is hope … Rock ‘n' roll loves you! The WSOBP Experience Two local teams head to the desert to compete for beer pong glory in Vegas By Kyle Alhf, Bakotopia.com contributor First of all, let me say that even though Bakersfield didn’t win the World Series of Beer Pong (WSOBP), Jan. 1-5, we definitely made our mark on the Las Vegas scene. Here’s a little play-by-day breakdown: Day 1, Jan. 1: My partner and I Shane Mcrae of team Floatin’ Keyz and our friends, John Dodsworth and Zak Corsi of team Taste My Juice all headed to Las Vegas with family and friends for check-in, registration and to see what teams we were up against for the next couple days. Day 2, Jan. 2: This was a whole new experience for the four of us! We walked into the Sunset Ballroom of the Flamingo Casino to see vendor booths, TV cameras, the Jumbo Tron with team stats and scores from over 800 beer pong players like us! Even with all the new scenery, Day

Buddies & beer: Floatin’ Keyz and Taste My Juice 2 went pretty calm. Floatin’ Keyz ended the day breaking even at three wins and three losses, while team Taste My Juice came in close at a two wins and four losses. Both of our teams were on an emotional rollercoaster with high hopes of winning, and fear of defeat with the agony that accompanies it! This was when the gloves came off! We all four worked together with our family and friends to distract the other teams! Floatin’ Keyz went up against a team from Maryland. We already

knew we were outside of the winning spots to make it to the finals, so we came down hard on these guys! Back and forth we battled down to one cup on each side of the table, after countless shots by both teams. Then we started to look around … we were the only game still going on in the arena! Then from out of the stillness, our friends and supporters started chanting “661!” Soon we had around 200 people screaming, “661! 661!” Now with that pressure, we afraid to let anyone down, so we did what

anyone would do - we clutched our last shot and ruined the perfect record of our opponents from Maryland! After we finished, we headed over to watch our buds in Taste My Juice, who had a respectable 4-2 finish on Day 2! They were up against their next team. They started to make work of the cups fast with both teams back-toback sinking balls! The rest of our crew began chipping away at the challenging team, who actually lashed back out at the crowd. After they began to lash out at us, we knew their heads were no longer in the game! We all exchanged words I wouldn’t say in front of my mother! Fortunately, Taste My Juice cleaned up house on these guys! All in all, the WSOBP was a great event where we laughed, screamed, made new friends, made people hate us, played beer pong and drank beer! Possession of less than an ounce of marijuana is a misdemeanor punishable as an infraction. You can only get a fine and not jail time. You could just take the fine and get it over with. The court or D.A. might also offer you a counseling program, which, if you complete it, would result in the dismissal of the charges. Or you could consult with a Public Defender or private attorney to see if your rights were violated during the stop, which could result in the evidence being suppressed and the case dismissed.

TIME TO GET

‘WICKED’ For ticket info, visit the Orpheum’s Web site at: www.orpheumtheatertickets.com

If you missed your chance in LA, you can catch the already class musical in San Fran By Gabriel Ramirez, Bakotopia.com contributor ome stories are more complicated than just following a yellow brick road. Such is the case with “Wicked: The Untold Story of The Witches of Oz,” a musical based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, currently onstage at The Orpheum in San Francisco after a hugely successful run at The Pantages in Los Angeles. The musical is thought provoking as is seen when the phrase, “Animals should be seen, not heard,” is presented on stage during one of the powerful moments of the musical, which draws complete silence from the audience. The musical focuses on the lives of the two witches from the beloved classic “The Wizard of Oz,” prior to the arrival of the naïve young girl, Dorothy, and up to the point of death of the so-called Wicked Witch of the West. The musical takes us on a journey depicting a different view of what really happened in Oz and how a green little girl came to be known as “Wicked.” We encounter classic characters like the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Lion, but get introduced to others, such as Fiyero, a gallant young lad who catches the eye of both of the protagonists, and Nessarose, the woman we have come to know as the Wicked Witch of the East. The performance is filled with humor, amazing costumes and great musical numbers, such as the upbeat “Popular” and “One Short Day” but also with profound songs,

S

such as “No Good Deed” and my favorite, “Defying Gravity,” which talks about going against the norm and fighting for the rights of all. While the play delivers all the romance, action, color and glamour musicals usually do, it also addresses a social issue that has taken center stage around the world and even here in Bakersfield: how to deal with so-called second-class citizens. In the musical, Elphaba, the green witch, along with the animal inhabitants of Oz - who display all the qualities of humans, except they look like goats, monkeys and lions - are looked down upon by the denizens of Oz. The animals, productive members of society who work as everything from nannies to professors, are persecuted and feared for being different. Eventually, their voices are literally taken away - sound familiar? Prop. 8 anyone? These acts of discrimination eventually lead Elphaba to take matters into her own hands, as she revolts against the bigotry of the Wizard of Oz, and therefore, becomes the target of a smear campaign, which has the denizens of Oz believing she is truly evil. The treatment of animals in Oz as second-class citizens can’t help but remind us of how our own society finds ways to discriminate against, silence and demean productive members of society because of their differences in race, religion and sexual orientation. Elphaba’s dedication to equality eventually takes her down a tragic path, but the musical’s message is clear: Doing nothing to fight for what is right might make you the most popular person, but it leaves you as nothing more than an empty shell to be manipulated by higher powers. The musical takes you back to the days when you sat in front of your screen watching Dorothy skipping down the yellow brick road, but also allows you to deal with issues we tend to ignore in our society. “Wicked” provides a colorful, exciting and insightful time for the whole family.

ECTING THE ART O

By Twinkie, Bakotopia.com contributor hile the origin of a “blog” is uncertain and varies depending on the person you ask, one thing is certain: Blogs have become mainstream and are here to stay. But what is a blog, exactly? The word “blog” comes from the words, “WEB LOG.” In other words, you can log your personal feelings or you can log your favorite books, favorite bands, etc. And if it’s on the WEB, and you’re keeping a LOG, it’s considered a blog. Another way to think about it is that it’s an online diary. So how do you start? Well, you can buy your own domain and host your own blog, although that way is more complicated and should probably be left for the computer experts. You can also find a host through: wordpress.com, yahoo.com, or google.com. The most obvious and better choice, of course, is choosing to blog on your friendly, local site for blogs, bands and social networking: Bakotopia.com Once you choose which site to host your blog, it’s time to pick a name for it. This name/title should reflect a little bit about your personality. It should be catchy, but informational. For examples, you can look at a few Bakotopians blogs and their

The Day The Music Died Feb. 3 marks 50th anniversary of the plane crash that changed rock 'n' roll By Matt Munoz, Bakotopia.com contributor ou’ve heard the song, but do you remember the story? On a cold stormy night, Feb. 3, 1959, three of rock music’s most popular, up-and-coming stars took a plane ride, never to return. Frustrated with tour bus conditions after a gig the night before at Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa rock hitmaker Buddy Holly, along with rising teen idol Ritchie Valens, and radio personality turned music star - J. P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, decide to board a small charter craft headed to their next gig in Hector Airport in Fargo, North Dakota once their show was over that night. On their way to their destination, the plane crashed into a cornfield,

Y

killing all four passengers, including pilot Roger Peterson. Immortalized in movies, “The Buddy Holly Story” (1978), with actors Gary Busey as Holly; as well as “La Bamba” (1987), with Lou Diamond Phillips as Valens and Esai Morales as his brother Bob, many music fans will forever associate the incident with Don McLeans 1971 jukebox staple, “American Pie,” also covered by Madonna in 2000. While there is a lot of info available on the Web regarding the crash itself - everything from Buddy Holly’s autopsy report to the official accident report, there are a lot of twist of fate stories sprinkled throughout - including future country legend Waylon Jennings losing his seat to Richardson; Ritchie Valens winning

a coin toss to fly; and Dion DiMucci from Dion & The Belmonts choosing not to fly due to the price of the flight ($36), among other trivia bits. The influence of these talents on the history of popular music will always be felt and recognized. Guitarist Carlos Santana always cites Ritchie Valens as one of the reasons he picked up the guitar as a young Latino. Beatle Paul McCartney has paid tribute to Buddy Holly numerous times, even producing one of the best tribute projects available on Holly, entitled, “The Real Buddy Holly.” And who can forget, dancing to “La Bamba,” saying “Hellllloooo Babyyyy?” like the Big Bopper, or screaming out “Rittchhhhieeee!” after you hear a Ritchie Valens song? So don’t forget to raise a drink, throw on “Peggy Sue,” “Donna” or one of your favorite tracks by these legends on Feb. 3, and toast to the artists who gave us these immortal musical classics.

‘America's Got Talent’ is Back! Follow in the footsteps of a local giant - you just might make the cut! By Sara Tagaloa, Bakotopia.com contributor o you have what it takes, Bakersfield? With a talent search open to any act of any age, “AMERICA'S GOT TALENT” has

D

brought the variety format back to the forefront of American culture by showcasing the hottest performers from across the country. For season four, “America's Got Talent” is currently planning a MASSIVE nationwide audition tour starting

in January '09! The auditions will be traveling across America to over eight major cities including Los Angeles, Jan. 29-31, at the Los Angeles Convention Center located in downtown LA. Each week, the show features a

colorful array of hopeful stars, including singers, dancers, comedians, pets, contortionists, impressionists, jugglers, magicians and ventriloquists, all vying for their chance to perform on stage in front of our panel of celebrity judges and the viewing audience in the hopes they'll be chosen the winner. Remember Bakersfield's George “The Giant” McArthur? Last year, he brought his firecracking, milk through the nose, near-death experience mayhem to the national stage, making it to the top 40 most popular acts ever on AGT! For the last three seasons this series has truly changed the lives of its previous contestants in ways they never dreamed of…Last year insurance salesman/opera singer Neal E. Boyd from Missouri won the $1,000,000 grand prize and also achieved his lifelong dream to headline on the Las Vegas Strip with a show planned for the MGM. What makes this show unique is that any talent goes. We want to see anything and everything…No matter how zany, bizarre or unusual others may think your talent is, on our show, it could make you a star. So BAKERSFIELD, do you have talent? If so here's your chance to show America! We are CASTING IMMEDIATELY so pre-register now for an audition AND send us a tape of your act! For more information on AGT, please log onto: nbc.com/agt. If you are not able to attend one of the “America's Got Talent” auditions we still want to see you shine! Please visit: www.NBC.com/agt as soon as possible for instructions on how to submit a video of your performance. Remember to submit your video audition as quickly as possible for your shot at being America's next ONE MILLION DOLLAR WINNER! Good Luck!
