Local native joins Alzheimer’s Association BY BARBARA LANZ-MATEO Community contributor
L
eslie Hardt has joined the staff of the Alzheimer’s Association California Central Chapter as the area manager for Kern County. She will oversee all county activities for the Chapter through an office in Bakersfield. Hardt is returning to her hometown of Bakersfield after living for nine years in Ventura County where she was an Ombudsman for Long Term Care for Ventura County. She also volunteered extensively with her church community in many different activities. Prior to working in Ventura county, Hardt worked as an Alzheimer care counselor for the Alzheimer’s Association in the Santa Barbara and Northern California Chapter offices. Hardt’s dad grew alfalfa and cotton in the Olive Drive area, where he also raised an assortment of farm animals, fresh garden produce and fruit trees. “Bakersfield truly is my home,” she says. “I raised my family here, as did my parents, as did both of their parents. I’ve lived in other parts of Cali-
fornia over the last 10 years, and upon moving back, the first thing I was reminded of is how genuinely caring and friendly people are in Bakersfield.” Hardt is now meeting with families throughout the county who are dealing with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. She is available to help through counseling and by referring families to local services such as day care and residenHardt tial facilities. She can be reached at 9123053 or by email at leslie.hardt@alz.org. Currently, 10,000 families in Kern County are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer's is a brain-wasting condition that is projected to leap from 5.4 million cases in the United States this year into the double digits by midcentury. No. 6 on the list of top 10 causes of death in the USA, Alzheimer's is the only one without an effective way to prevent, cure or even slow the disease.

Bakersfield Chamber looks for new class of leaders BY TONYA STERLING Community contributor
A
pplications are now being accepted for the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce Leadership Bakersfield program, Class of 2013. Dedicated to promoting and developing dynamic business and community leaders, this unique and versatile program offers an opportunity for participants to become actively involved in the community and gain knowledge about our area’s challenges and issues while exploring solutions and alternatives. Once a month, from September through June, participants attend an all-day seminar that includes a combination of lectures, panel discussions and hands-on visits to locations relevant to the day's theme. Local deci-
sion-makers and experts on the topics addressed are invited to share their insights and views. Group discussions give participants an opportunity to express their opinions and interact with the experts and each other. Applications are available online at www.bakersfieldchamber.org. Submission deadline is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 22. For more details, email: tsterling@bakersfieldchamber.org or call 327-4421. “Leadership Bakersfield is truly a gem in our community,” said Jarrod McNaughton, Associate Vice President of Marketing San Joaquin Community Hospital. “I was born and raised in Bakersfield and was amazed at the information and new relationships I made through Leadership. It’s an asset for anyone, whether a long-time resident or newcomer to our community.”
