y classroom was completely silent, except for the sound of sobbing. We had all just found out minutes before class that we had tragically lost one of our students in a car accident. Our principal’s voice came over the loud speaker and asked that we all have a moment of silence. Those words weren’t even necessary in my room, as we were all quietly grieving the empty desk and missing soul in the room. In all my years of teaching, this day would prove to be, and will remain, my hardEducation columnist est day yet. I knew I needed to say something. I looked around the room, at all the tears and sobs, and I wanted more than anything to make the heartache stop. The only thing I could muster to say was, “I wish I had something to tell you that would make this better, but there are no words.” My next class came in and the room looked the same: tears,

heartache, pain. Again, I thought to myself that I must say something, that they are looking to me for advice, but again, through tears, I could only merely explain that there is nothing I could say or do to make this any better. I then looked at my board of our list of things to do for the day and said, “All of this means nothing anymore. What can we do to help one another through this? Can we make cards? Can we talk?' The students didn’t have much to say in the way of suggestions, but their faces told me everything. The only thing I could think to do at that moment was to post a discussion on My Big Campus and offer the students a chance to write, grieve, and hopefully seek the support they needed. The room remained quiet for the remainder of the period while the students posted their thoughts. These are some of their thoughts and remembrances of Jared Fair. • “Jared was too young and didn’t deserve this. He was such a kindhearted person. He was funny, cool, nice, and always had a smile on his face. He always made everyone laugh with his jokes. I’ll miss that. I was lucky enough to get to know Jared and hangout with him on the weekends, and after school. I’ll miss him. We’ll CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

We love you, Jared, and you are missed.” • “I know it’s hard to let go. I know it’s hard to accept the fact that he’s no longer with us, making us smile, but we’ve got to. It may sound harsh, but we have to. Jared would not want us to be mourning over him. He would want us to replay all of the memories and think back to all the good times we had along his side. Things always happen for a reason. God needed him to be by His side. Now he’s watching over us, standing next to God and looking down upon us. He may be gone, but he will NEVER be forgotten. Jared Fair (1999-2013) ... Now an official angel.” Kimberly Graham is an eighthgrade teacher at Stonecreek Junior High in the Panama-Buena Vista Union School District. I was really sad at first, but then I stopped to think, ‘He’s in a better place.’ Stonecreek will miss you. It’s really quiet without you. I wish I would have gotten to know you better. I know you’re looking down at us right now telling us not to cry — it’s just too hard to hold our tears back. It’s hard to say goodbye, but I know we’ll try. We’ll miss you, Jared Fair. Rest in Paradise. You may be gone, but never forgotten.” • “Jared was one of the best people I know. He was funny, smart, and amazing as a friend. STEM CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The goal of the Siemens STEM Institute is to create a group of STEM ambassadors who can take what they learn this summer back into their own classrooms and become key influencers in their schools and communities. Bakersfield celloist to perform with Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra COURTESY OF TEHACHAPI SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA he Tehachapi Symphony, directed by David Newby, will perform on Sunday, May 19, at 4 p.m. at Country Oaks Baptist Church, 20915 Schout Road in Tehachapi. This year’s “Young Artist” competition” winner, Anna McCoy from Bakersfield, will perform Saint-Saëns, Cello Concerto No. 1 in A Minor. She earned the opportunity to be the featured soloist by winning the “Young Artist” competition earlier this year. McCoy began studying cello at age 11 under Norma Sexton. Two years later, Anna started lessons with Karen Blockley, and continues to benefit from her demanding, yet kind instruction. As a participant in the Fine Arts Summer Academy 2012 Anna McCoy in Nashville, McCoy also studied under Benjamin Wolaver. In the 2007-08 school year, McCoy played in a string ensemble directed by Marci Maynard. In 2008, McCoy began playing in the Calvary Bible Church orchestra, directed by Mark Merical, and later Rob Tompkins. She is in her fifth year with this group and thoroughly enjoys it. In 2009, McCoy joined the Bakersfield Youth Symphony, conducted by Maxim Eshkenazy, and is in her second year as principle cellist. In 2012, through the summer academy, she played under orchestral conductor Kyunghun Kim. McCoy has received many accolades for her solo work. A four-year participant in the California Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Festival, she consistently ranked “superior.” She has performed for KVPR’s Young Artist Spotlight and looks forward to performing Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra in May and the Bakersfield Youth Symphony Orchestra in June. From early childhood, McCoy has been surrounded by music in her home. Anna learned to sing harmony at a very young age and her family always encouraged her to sing and “compose music” at the piano. has performed with family and friends in countless vocal and instrumental ensembles including classic string trio performances with her sister Kara McCoy and friend Samuel Lang, instrumental ensembles for weddings nd special occasions, bluegrass solos and celtic ensembles. She gratefully acknowledges that her family members have been her most devoted encouragers: listening, critiquing and praying through her biggest musical challenges. A high school senior, McCoy has been home schooled her entire life. She loves learning and especially enjoys history and Greek. Other interests include camping, studying the Bible and instructing children in music and drama PHOTO BY VICTOR PECK through various church groups and community music camps. She considers music one of God’s most glorious creations. She marvels that God has enabled her to serve and honor Him through it. The Tehachapi Symphonic Chorus and director Kathy Kelly will also join the symphony for Verdi’s Va, Pensiero, Wagner’s Pilgrims’ Chorus, and Verdi’s Libiamo. Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 in D Major will also be performed. After the intermission, a drawing will be featured for the yearly fundraiser. Tickets may be purchased from any Tehachapi Symphony member, board member or Tehachapi Symphonic Chorus member. The grand prize is $1,000. A reception will be hosted following the concert to allow community members to meet the “Young Artist” competition winner, as well as symphony and chorus directors and members. Come enjoy this lovely and talented young performer and her hauntingly beautiful melodies on her cello, the talented Symphonic Chorus, as well as the Tehachapi Symphony Orchestra.
