Let’s Laugh: Will spider get his revenge? BY CAROLINE REID Community contributor

A

t my house, spiders are not a welcome sight. I have the “bug man” out quarterly to shoo them all away. He shooed them all the last time except one lousy critter that said “good morning” to me the other day. Sitting at the PC working away, I saw a black spot moving on the windowsill. Thinking it might have been one of those “floaters” that we all get in our eyes once in a while, I ignored it. It moved again and it had legs. Floaters don’t have legs. Or eyes. This thing had eyes, legs and a white spot on its rear end. Floaters don’t have a rear end. My bug spray supply was totally depleted from a gigantic daddy long legs I obliterated in the garage a couple of weeks ago. All I could get my hands on for this spider attack was mosquito repellent and a spray bottle of kitchen disinfectant. Armed with the mosquito repellent I

fear he is still lurking there, just waiting for me to see if he’s dead. He’ll jump out, attack me and my days will be numbered. I know that’s what he’s thinking! I looked in the windowsill the other day and didn’t see a sign of him. I still haven’t touched the window lock! However, and let this be a warning to you — the combo of mosquito repellent and kitchen disinfectant takes paint off! I could not believe my eyes. The paint on my windowsill is still peeling. My daughter, who doesn’t have any critter phobias, told me I should have grabbed a paper towel, wrapped him up and put him back in the garden where he belongs. Ewwwwww, no way! She went on to say that I might have better served nature by putting him back in his natural habitat. She’s a biologist! She looks for endangered lizards in the desert. How did I raise a biologist? Now I feel guilty! What if I’ve upset the balance of nature? I won’t worry about it for too long, but I will worry. It’s just something I do.

YOURCONTEST Showing their true colors

Boogie Woogie ‘Beagle’ Boy wins!

BY ALEX TORRES Community contributor

BY RAY & SHAN

Fourth of July is the day where we all celebrate our independence. We can show our true colors and just be free. Our family celebrates by having family and friends all gather together. We eat food, talk, play basketball, and best of all, show our stripes with a blast of fireworks.

Community contributors

This is Jake, our “Boogie Woogie Beagle Boy.” We have two therapy dogs, and this year, we celebrated the Fourth of July by dressing up our two little special friends and taking them to visit the residents at Rosewood Health Center. The dogs were happy to spread some Fourth of July spirit and they got lots of smiles and “ahhhhhhs” for their special Fourth of July attire. It was a fun thing to do — so much, we are planning to do the same thing next year. It made our Fourth very special this year.

Jake dressed up as “Uncle Sam,” and along with his co-therapy dog, visited residents in the Rosewood Health Center. Jake’s owners will receive six tickets to the Monterey Bay Aquarium for this winning shot!

Celebrating the Fourth of July with family, friends and your pet horse! The Saffell kids parade around with their pet horse dressed in patriotic fashion, then celebrate with fireworks galore! Giddyap! The Saffell kids love to saddle up with their pet horse in celebration of our nation’s birthday.

The Fourth of July has been a longstanding favorite holiday in our family. Traditionally it’s been filled with family, food, fireworks, and fun. Colton, 2, is our oldest son and will be celebrating the Fourth for the third year now. He is, hands-down, the most excited one in our family this year! We’ve been shopping in preparation for the big day. Among food, decorations, and outdoor games that we’ve got for the celebration, we added some wardrobe to the mix this year. This is a picture of Colton modeling some of his Fourth of July flare before the fun begins! Doesn’t he just make you want to celebrate already? He’s an American 2-year-old who is Two-year-old Colton Kaiser is a HUGE fan certainly proud to wear his red, white, of the Fourth of July, as evidenced here and blue. with his rather patriotic ensemble!

The Cox family sets good examples of patriotism.

All-American Beauty BY STACY COX Community contributor

My husband and I feel that one of our greatest challenges as parents is to raise our children to be honorable and respectful adults. Adopting a path of patriotism is a good reinforcement for them to show honor and a good sense of ethics. It is our job to instill a sense of honor and patriotism in their young hearts, offering them the opportunity to love and honor their country and its flag. In doing so, their actions will be seen as a good example for their country to show mankind and the world. Setting good examples of patriotism should, in turn, teach our kids that every person counts, no matter where they live, or who they might be. God Bless the USA!

Every year, our family packs up the trailers and heads to Pismo Beach for a week of camping for the Fourth of July. The last few years we have started a new tradition of having a bike parade around the campground. The young and the young at heart decorate their bikes in red, white & blue and then we wind our way through the entire campground making as much noise as possible and wishing everyone a happy Fourth of July! All the

campers love to watch us go by & send us a friendly wave or smile. After the parade, we head back to our campsites, where we barbecue hamburgers and hot dogs. After dinner, we pack up our lawn chairs and hike down to the beach and wait for the sun to go down. The kids always play a friendly game of football in the sand, and once nightfall arrives, the fireworks begin! Our family is blessed to have so many special occasions when we all come together and enjoy being a true all-American family.

All of the participants of this annual bike parade at a campground in Pismo Beach pause for a group photo.

Last week’s TBV cover was a photo of my friend’s grandson — Johnathan Lawrence Miller, he is named after his grandfathers. We decided to do a patriotic- themed photo shoot of Jonathan and his sister. This really got us in the spirit for the Fourth! Holidays such as the Fourth of July make for such fun photos. There is no better way to show your spirit — photos of friends and family all decked out in red, white and blue ...

Jump for joy! This young American incorporated a cool element into his Fourth of July celebration as he leaps into a pool!

m one of the later arrivals to Facebook, which is probably a good thing as I’ve quickly become all but addicted to spending time on the site. I have a ball typing nonsense with some of my friends, I take enough quizzes to have covered nearly every aspect of my being and I love reading the updates from groups I’ve joined or people and causes I’m interested in. Except for one huge hole. I’m not a fan of any of our local animal-related organizations. Not one. Why not? Because none of them appear on Facebook. Far be it from me to declare the state of nonprofits in the digital age, but seriously, local groups have got to get off the fence and get involved with social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. A quick perusal of Web sites of local animal organizations show that many have not been updated in some time, like the BakersPet columnist field SPCA’s

VICKY THRASHER

link to photos of their annual Book Sale — their 2007 Book Sale, that is. Another local organization doesn’t include an email address for interested people to ask questions, and one local group has no Web site at all. In this day and age, when more and more people are using the Internet to explore and connect, not being involved in some of the most widely used sites is hurting you. Local groups need to stay connected with their audience, and that audience is online. Facebook provides an excellent opportunity to reach out, share stories of rescue and adoption and highlight events to people who want to know about them. Social networking sites can provide access to volunteers, a new avenue to generate support for your programs and a great way to share your organization’s mission and goals — but only if you participate. It’s time to move your group into the 21st century. Not sure how it all works? Ask one of your younger volunteers to give you a quick tour and you’ll find it’s easier than you think. Heck, I’ll give you a tour if you need one. When you get your group activated, look me up. I’ll be pleased to “friend” you. Have a pet-related question or comment? Memories of Morro Bay FROM: DOUG’S BLOG

A

lmost every year we have traveled to Morro Bay to see the fireworks on the Fourth of July. This year we made our reservations early to ensure a space to stay after the grand display. Well, things did not quite work out the way we had planned. Morro Bay City Council cancelled the fireworks in favor of a laser light show at the park. They cited ecological considerations for the health of the bay and financial strains as the reasons for the change. We did not want to go down to the park, find parking, walk to the park and watch an electronic light show. My last light show was accompanied by the Strawberry Alarm Clock in 1967. I didn’t need this. So we just wandered over to the pier across from our room and waited for the sun to set so that I could maybe get a decent sunset shot. This picture is what I got. Better than any man-made light show any day.

Even though Morro Bay cancelled its annual fireworks show, there was still beauty to be found in the sky.
