ptimal Hospice is actively recruiting veterans to volunteer in its “Veteran to Veteran” volunteer program. It’s part of the “We Honor Veterans” program, sponsored by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Program. Optimal Hospice is currently a Level 2 partner, and is seeking to achieve the next level to better serve Kern County veterans. Each level requires Optimal Hospice to implement more programs geared toward assisting veterans with their end-oflife issues. One of the Level 3 program requirements is to establish a “Veteran to Veteran” program,” with the idea that volunteers with past military experi-

Duffield named president, CEO of San Joaquin Community Hospital COURTESY OF SAN JOAQUIN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

D

oug Duffield has been appointed President and CEO of San Joaquin Community Hospital. The announcement was made by Scott Reiner, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Adventist Health, who also is board chairman for Bakersfield operations. Duffield will assume his new role July 15. Duffield comes to San Joaquin hospital from Florida, where he served the past four years as president and CEO at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills. He drastically raised the hospital’s consumer and physician satisfaction scores and brought expenses down each year, while increasing the overall quality of patient care and safety. He also played a key role in raising essential funds for the hospital’s charitable foundation.

“Doug’s leadership in Tampa positively impacted the hospital and community. The hospital realized substantial volume growth and reductions in operating expenses, while other hospitals in the area lost profits,” Reiner said. “His experience will help us successfully face health care reform and perform at a highDuffield er level to meet the needs of the Bakersfield community.” A legacy of Duffield’s leadership is seen in the completion of expanded services, including a Comprehensive Please turn to DUFFIELD / 2

Local company chairman rides in ‘Trek for Education’ BY MARK BOEDER Community contributor

A

ccount Control Technology, Inc., a company delivering debt management and recovery solutions with about 205 employees in its Bakersfield office, has been following the progress of Dale Van Dellen, chairman of the company and the Account Control Technology Foundation. Van Dellen took a solo motorcycle ride more than 4,000 miles one way, from Los Angeles to Deadhorse, Alaska, to raise funds for local and national scholarship programs. Some of the proceeds will help fund scholarships designated for high school students in Bakersfield. Van Dellen’s trek can be followed at rally.org/actfoundation. Funds raised from Van Dellen’s journey will benefit the Account Control Technology Foundation, a nonprofit organization that support education, builds financial literacy, funds vital charities and provides community support. Incoming funds will be earmarked for two college scholarship programs launched by the foundation in 2013 — one for deserving second-year students at colleges and universities

nationwide, and one for graduating high school seniors in local communities surrounding company offices.

Seed funding of $50,000 will deliver 50 $1,000 scholarships through the programs in 2013. The goal of Van

Dellen’s trek was to raise additional funds and awareness to ensure the two programs’ longevity. “The ACT Foundation is a great way for people to support higher education as well as programs to help students manage their financial futures,” said Nabil Kabbani, CEO of Account Control Technology and board member of the foundation. “Thus far, Dale’s journey has raised thousands of dollars for the foundation and has provided inspiration for the cause of funding higher education.” Van Dellen’s “Trek for Education” began on June 9. He reached Alaska on June 22, and will rest before circling back. The round trip will take him 30 days. He is delivering daily reports of his journey on his foundation page at rally.org/act, where followers can also donate funds and provide inspirational notes.
