Student bakes to pay for college Library offers variety of classes this month BY DENINE CURRY

y name is Denine Curry and I am a student at Golden Valley High School. I have big plans for my life. I know that after high school, the best way to ensure that you will have a bright and successful future is to go to college. People that do are typically able to find better and more secure jobs than those who don't. After I graduate from high school I plan to go to culinary school to study to become a pastry chef — and eventually open my own bak- Denine Curry ery/restaurant. The school that I go to depends on how much money I earn. The Art Institute of California - San Diego is my first choice, but because it costs $24,000 per year, and I will need to attend for at least two years, I may not be able to go — it’s simply too expensive for my mom and I to afford. My mom supports my younger sister and I. She makes sure we have everything we need but with all our costs, the bills, and paying off her student loans, she can’t afford to pay for my college.
Although we struggle, she still makes too much for us to get financial assistance. I have been looking for a job since my 16th birthday, but with no luck. Since I needed money and want to become a pastry chef, I decided I could bake to raise money for college. With that thought in mind, I started “Cookies and Cakes for College.” With “Cookies and Cakes for College” I bake and deliver treats in exchange for donations that I put away for college. I have a lot of items to choose from including cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. Besides my list of treats — which I have listed on Facebook at “Cookies and Cakes for College” — I can make custom cakes and treats. My specialties are cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops (or cake balls) which include all the same flavors as the cakes — including Boston crème pie. In addition to helping pay for college, I plan on helping others as well. For every $5 I make I plan on donating $1 to the Kern County library system because I know that kids are not exposed enough to educational, fun, and safe places to be outside of school. Without libraries, some kids who don’t own computers are unable to type reports for school. Donating money to the public library will ensure that everyone has the opportunity to read — and that kids have a safe and constructive place to be. Besides my Facebook page, you can contact be by email at: Nenepryncess@gmail.com.. Thank you for your support!
