These diet tips will have you ready for tank tops & flip-flops

T'S TIME TO REV IT UP! It’s already March and the race against time has begun. Summer is around the corner, and in Bakersfield, this equates to shorts, tank tops, flip-flops — and well, lots of skin showing! Need to look good in a hurry? Read on for some great tips to help you get there before the heat is on. With each passing decade, a woman’s metabolism slows by about five percent. Hormones do play a role — but mostly it’s because as we get older, we typically become less active. As a result, we lose muscle mass, a major consumer of the calories we scarf down. By the time a woman is 35 years old she burns 75 percent fewer calories a day than she did at age 25. By age 65, she’ll burn 500 fewer. According to Madelyn Fernstrom, Ph.D., director of weight management at the University of Pittsburgh, one can outsmart Mother Nature with a few tips I will share with my readers.
°Sip some java. The average metabolic rate of people who drank caffeinated coffee increased 16 percent over that of those who drank decaf. Caffeine stimulates your central nervous system by increasing your heart rate and breathing. °Drink cold water. Your body may only burn a few calories by heating the cold water to your core temperature, but, hey, that sounds like a freebie to me by burning extra calories with essentially zero additional effort. °Have some proFitness columnist tein with each meal. Protein helps build and maintain lean muscle mass. Muscle burns more calories than fat does, even at rest (think sitting, sleeping.) Shoot for 30 grams of protein
GINA ROLOW
per meal, the equivalent of about one cup of low-fat cottage cheese or a four-ounce chicken breast at EACH meal. °Go Green! Green tea is the closest thing to a metabolism potion, says Tammy Lakatos Shames, R.D., author of “Fire Up Your Metabolism, 9 proven Principles for Burning Fat and Losing Weight Forever.” Drinking approximately three to five cups per day can torch an extra 50 calories — and according to my math, that can mean shedding five pounds per year. Make sure you steep your tea for three minutes and drink while hot. °Burn more while doing a circuit-based cardio; it’s the ticket to a turbo-boosting metabolism. For example, instead of doing steady state cardio, mix it up and perform 2-3 min of cardio, and two sets of resistance work (lunges, squats, which work large muscle groups.) Then go back to cardio for 2-3 minutes and pick another exercise for, again, two sets. Repeat for 30 minutes. And don’t neglect to add some upper body in the mix as well —
push-ups, pull-ups, and rows — any exercise that uses large muscles will fuel your metabolism far better than just steady state cardio. °Don’t be an ABOHOLIC! Bunches of crunches are not the best way to work your core. Isolating the abs may make them look better, but yo’'ll miss out on a lot of core strength if you JUST do sit-ups. For all out fitness while trying to whittle your middle, try planks in all directions. ° Eat Nemo’s friends. Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and sardines are loaded with hunger-quashing omega 3 fatty acids. These healthy fats help trigger the rapid transfer of “I’m full” signals to your brain, according to National Institutes of Health. Having a 3.5-ounce serving of salmon nets you 90 percent of your recommended daily value of vitamin D, which help preserve your calorie craving, metabolism-stoking muscle tissue. Finally, if the scale doesn’t budge — and you’ve been faithful about your calories in versus your calories out, and you never
miss a workout but still don’t see results, you may have a sluggish thyroid gland. The hormones it produces, thyroxine and triiodothyronine help control every aspect of your metabolism, from your heart to the number of calories you torch. Without enough of either hormone, your metabolism is forced to slow down. An estimated one in eight women will develop some form of thyroid disorder. A definite diagnosis requires a blood test. Cheating on nutrition and skimping on exercise are more common culprits in a lagging metabolism, but if you're spinning your wheels and not getting anywhere, talk to your doc. Here’s hoping these fitness tips jump start your metabolism before summer gets here. STAY HEALTHY-STAY FIT! Questions or comments? Please email Gina @fitness4life5959@yahoo.com. Examine your life — one puddle at a time
Filmmaker Julian Wilson gives back to his alma mater, receives award
BY USERNAME: SONFLOWERANDGRACE ontrary to popular belief, “good” and “bad” are not terms which best define the two main groups of people. The real distinction is found when they are faced with a puddle. Puddle-jumpers and Puddle-wafflers view puddles the same way they do life. Puddle-jumpers are those who go through the puddle — and those who go around or over are Puddle-wafflers. Puddle-jumpers enjoy their ice cream on a cone or, on the rare occasion when a cone is not available, in a sundae dish and topped with hot fudge sauce. Walking barefoot in the park and wiggling their toes in the sand at the beach bring them joy. There isn’t a rose that a Puddle-jumper has not stopped to smell — nor an opportunity missed to view the sunrise or sunset in a new land. Unlike Puddle-jumpers who see the beauty in everything, Puddle-wafflers believe that beauty is everything. They eat from the four major food groups: sugar-free, fat-free, guilt-free and taste-free. They spend enormous sums of money on name brand items and products designed to reverse the effects of aging. Image is a priority to Puddle-wafflers, but not to Puddle-jumpers. In fact, they believe that style cannot be bought; wrinkles are character lines and stretch marks are souvenirs. True contentment is a choice that Puddle-jumpers exercise regularly. Regret and resentment do not reside in the realm of a Puddle-jumper because pleasure is never forfeited. The best is meant to be found and appreciated in any situation. Jean Webster once said: “It isn’t the big pleasures that count the most; it’s making a great deal out of the little ones.” Puddle-jumpers are adventurous, considering detours and diversions part of the scenic route. Lines at the checkout counter offer the chance to slow down. Puddle-wafflers are impatient and easily frustrated by change. They also view work from a different perspective. Puddle-jumpers are creative and efficient. However, Puddle-wafflers never make the time to create because there is always work to be done. The list of differences between Puddle-jumpers and Puddle-wafflers is endless. However, upon delving into their past, one comparison is found. They both began life as Puddle-jumpers. The natural tendency to jump in puddles is evident in a child’s first inclination not only to jump in when faced with a puddle, but to make as big of a splash as possible! When a parent redirects or reprimands them, the change begins. A “well-behaved” child will fight the heart’s desire and continue to evade the puddles until grown. The realization that life is short leads grown-ups to

COURTESY OF CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD or the past four years, Julian Wilson has been giving back to his alma mater by way of his talents. The filmmaker has been donating his time to document California State University, Bakersfield’s transition to NCAA Division I status. In recognition of his dedicated volunteerism, Wilson has been named the 2010-11 CSUB Alumnus of the Year. “The committee was very impressed with his dedication to CSUB and the great example he shows to his fellow alumni,” said Judy Snyder, Alumni Association board member and chair of the search committee. “Not only is he an excellent role model to the students he meets in supporting CSUB Athletics, he also demonstrates how alumni can give back to CSUB doing what they love.” Wilson is the executive producer of Nu Dawn Productions located in North Hollywood. A native of Los Angeles, he earned a bachelor’s in criminal justice from CSUB in 1987. After trying a career in law enforcement, he decided to return to CSUB and major in fine arts. He received his second bachelor’s degree in 1991 and began a new career in film and video production. Although he is based in Los Angeles, since 2007 Wilson has been attending most home athletics events and traveling with the CSUB teams to some away games. He has completed videos on the history of CSUB basketball and the inaugural season of CSUB baseball. He is currently finishing a documentary chronicling the four-year transition period of CSUB athletics from Division II to Division I – which was made official on Sept. 1, 2010. “It’s a mission that’s not complete,” Wilson said of both the documentary and his role as an alumnus. “As alumni, we have to set a precedent for future alumni to give back to the university. This university doesn’t prosper without us. We have to come back.” Wilson is also currently working on a PBS documentary about Indiana University students who are studying the history of the transatlantic slave trade in

revisit their views on life. Unable to fight the God-given urges but equally unable to cope with the guilt, they seek help from Puddle-jumpers’ Anonymous. Some go gladly into existence while others dump their emotional baggage and decide to live. However, the decision to enjoy all that life has to offer remains. The final title is given upon death. In the end, Puddle-jumpers and Puddle-wafflers are judged by whether they really lived — or merely existed. Do YOU have a blog or an opinion you’d like to share? n Friday, February 25, an episode of Animal Planet’s documentary series CONFESSIONS: ANIMAL HOARDING featured the professional advice of local veterinarian, Dr. Kristina Love. The series explores stories of people who own more pets then they can care for. The problem of animal hoarding is little understood, but far more common than most people realize. There are over 3000 reported cases a year, and at least 10 times that number that go unreported. The series brings families together to voluntarily find humane solutions that work for both pets and people. On this episode “80 Cats and a Baby,” a couple’s desire to have a baby is threatened by their 80 cats. According to Dr. Love, “there are many health risks involved for all parties- some of which could lead to severe complications of the pregnancy.” Dr. Love was born and raised in Bakersfield, and graduated from Veterinary School at Washington State in 1999. She operates a mobile pet veterinary unit as well as a surgical facility. More information about Dr. Love can be found at her website: http://www.drlovepetvet.com. If you know someone who might be an animal hoarder, you can learn more at www.animalhoardingproject.com.
