Tidbits about what’s happening in our local ‘animal’ kingdom

P

et Food Pantry: The Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry holds monthly bagging sessions of the dry food that is donated to them so they can stretch it out to the greatest number of people in need. If you are interested in helping out, get in touch with Self Serve Pet Spa at 588-7858 to find out when the next bagging session is. The Pet Food Pantry is always in need of cat food, so if you have some to spare, consider a donation to them. Head to their website at: www.bakersfieldpetfoodpantry.org, for a list of donation drop-off points. Lake Isabella Shelter: It looks like the first phase of the exercise yard project is going to commence at the Lake Isabella shelter. Friends of the Kern County Animal Shelters Foundation has succeeded in raising the funds necessary to have the concrete poured and the fencing installed —finally creating a space where dogs who are at the shelter will be able to go for a wee bit of offleash leg-stretching. Kudos to the Lake Isabella community for

rallying around this project, particularly in light of the tough economic situation these days. The folks working at the shelter thank you, and the dogs who will be able to make use of a little outside time will thank you as well. Look forward to reading news about the dedication ceremony in the days to come. Tails of Bakersfield: This week marks the beginning of the voting period for the Bakersfield “Pet Idol” part of the Tails of Bakersfield promotion taking Pet columnist place on Bakersfield.com. As of this writing, over 175 pet photos have been submitted, with donations headed for some of the most worthwhile companion animal groups in the greater

holding a fundraiser on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Red Brick Pizza, located at 9500 Brimhall Dr., from 4 to 9 p.m., during which time a portion of Red Brick’s proceeds will be donated to Friends Foundation to support low-cost spay/neuter efforts. In addition to the great food, there will also be opportunity drawings and items for sale. If you’ve ever been interested in Friends and what their goals are for homeless pets in Kern County, stop by and say “hello.” Feedback: Thanks so much to those of you who take time out of busy lives to provide a little feedback on Paw Print City. I truly appreciate every email that finds its way to my inbox. If there are pet-related events or issues you’d like to see addressed here, feel free to pass them along. I’m always interested in hearing your thoughts and ideas on what’s important in the world of companion animals.

Get a kick out of Kern’s ‘Best in the West’ Fair! One Book, One Bakersfield celebrates Hispanic

Heritage Month with events and book signings

BY LUZ PEÑA Community contributor

T

his year’s Kern County Fair expects to be big on family entertainment and savings. The annual county fair, which will run from Sept. 22 to Oct. 3 plans on being the ‘Best in the West’ once again. This year the fair will offer more discounts and free days while packing in the fun — so you can splurge on getting an extra corn dog for the road. “This year we’re having more discount (admission) days for children and adults,” said Bill Blair, chief executive officer of the Kern County Fair. “We want to make sure everyone comes out.” On opening day, Wednesday, Sept. 22, come between 3 and 5 p.m. and get into the fair for free. Don’t miss the Opening Day Parade at 5:30 p.m. During Kids DAZE on Sept. 23 and Sept. 30, children 12 years old and under get in for free. Also, on these two dates, San Joaquin Community Hospital will be on hand to give free immunizations. Just bring your child’s immunizations record. Other discount admission days are: Monday Madness on Sept. 27 when admission is only $3 before 9 p.m. for all visitors 6 years of age or older; Sept. 24 is free admission for seniors 55 years or older; and, 2for-1 Wednesday on Sept. 29, when you’ll get two adult admissions for the price of one. The 2-for-1 special will be offered for $8 until 9 p.m. After the family is done spinning and twirling on the carnival rides, there’s plenty to do. You can visit the Exhibit Buildings and Community Exhibits or go to the Livestock Barns and Pavilions or watch hypnotist Tina Marie, during her one of her two shows nightly or stop by the Turkey Stampede, where visitors can win free coupons for Subway sandwiches.
