Educator of the Month
Mr. Rhodes Nominated by Guadalupe Hernández PHOTOS BY BARBARA BUTLER OF FIRECREEKPHOTOGRAPHY
I’d like to nominate my twin daughters’ kindergarten teacher Mr. Rhodes who teaches at Discovery Elementary School. At the beginning of the year, I was so skeptical after having learned that they were going to have a male teacher for kindergarten. He has superseded all of my expectations as to what a great kindergarten teacher should be. My girls love Mr. Rhodes. He teaches them lots of cute and silly songs. He builds up their self-esteem. He is just so marvelous with my girls!

re you looking for an inexpensive way to beat the infamous “Bakersfield heat?” How about a visit to the water spray playground at Jastro Park? It’s FREE (perfect for anyone’s budget) and one of my family’s favorite ways to cool down and enjoy a couple of hours out. My granddaughter loves the water canons, dumping buckets, twirling flower and oh yes, the whale. I love the opportunity to kick back under a big tree and take a few photos. My husband loves the chance to catch up on his reading. I just haven’t figured out how that works since his eyes are closed most of the time. We’ve been known to grab Costco hot dogs and dash right over after work!! I’ve got to say that this is a great way to end a busy day. Jastro Park is on Truxtun Avenue, between Elm and Myrtle streets. Visit Bakersfield City Recreation & Parks for hours of operation and other spray water park locations or call 326-FUNN. Also visit their Web site at: http://www.bakersfieldcity.us/recreation/Par ks/jastro.htm

hat a glorious spring we have had! At Robby’s Nursery, we have been quite busy with enthusiastic gardeners. It seems like every other customer comments on the wonderful weather we’ve had. All seem so grateful while, at the same time, wondering when it will end. After all, we do live in Bakersfield. This year, along with the good weather, we have noticed an early and unusual abundance of worms devouring all kinds of plants. Army worms, grubs, tomato worms and bud Garden columnist worms are out in force. They seem to be stripping foliage from the garden as well as the trees. They are attacking petunias and geraniums as well as grapes, passion vines and even the lawn. Usually all this damage shows up in mid- to late summer, but I’m here to tell you it’s been going on for several weeks already. “Where do they come from?” is the question most often asked. Well, you

must think back to biology class ... remember, beautiful butterflies and moths lay the eggs for these annoying little creatures. I know we must have the worms for these butterflies, but could they leave some leaves on my Redbud or some flowers on the petunias? Grapevines don’t look so great with all the leaves looking like skeletons. To get a handle on worms, I like to use Liquid Seven or the organic product called Worm Ender. There is also a new organic product containing Spinocad that has been doing a good job on worms as well as leaf miners. These products can be used on ornamental plants and trees as well as edibles. Remember, when spraying to do so in the early morning or evening. And spray once a week for at least three weeks. Hold the water for 24 hours after spraying for the best kill. If you’ve been using one particular spray, sometimes it helps to try a different one ... mix them up for a better kill. I would gladly put up with dealing with a few worms if it meant more “beach weather,” but somehow I think our luck has about run out ... at least, where the weather is concerned! So, hello Bakersfield summer! — Gardening columnist Kathy Robinson is the owner of Robby’s Nursery in northwest Bakersfield.

he recent heat spate has caused many a Bakersfield resident to think of one thing — getting out of town as soon as possible. For the petless, or those people fortunate to have a builtin sitter (read: young adult living at home), vacationing can be easily accomplished. For the rest of us furparents, proper pet accommodations can make or break a worry-free vacation. Dog owners generally have two choices for pet care while vacationing; hiring a pet sitter or boarding their pup at a kennel. Pet sitters come to your home, usually two or three times a day to provide food, water, play time, and walks, and can be a great choice, especially if you have multiple pets of various species. If you are hiring a pet sitter for the first time, get recommendations from friends and family, check to be sure they are licensed, bonded and insured and request references from other cust o m e r s . vacation and observe their interaction with your pets, detail the services you need and ask questions. For some pets, especially those who suffer from separation anxiety, a boarding kennel can be a better choice. Like with pet sitters, start by asking friends, family and co-workers who they have had good experiences with in the past. Call and find out the operating hours of the kennel, then go out for a visit. Reputable kennels are always happy to show people around and highlight the amenities of their kennel. If your dog is a house dog, you may be interested in making sure their kennel is climate-controlled, while a larger rambunctious dog may need a kennel where there is an opportunity for out-of-kennel playing in a fenced play area.
