Gala to celebrate 45 years of scouting service A well-deserved retirement awaits woman dedicated to her job BY CAROLYN ZULLO Community contributor

I

t was a sunny day in early April 1964, when a spry young woman entered the Boy Scout office. Little did she know what a large impact on the face of Kern County she would make. She was wild, she was fun, and she held such compassion for boys that no one really knew what a difference she would make in the lives of thousands of youth who entered the Scout office to begin their scouting adventures. But we know 45 years lat-

er, that her enthusiasm, dedication, and friendship have made it possible for the Scouting program to thrive. For 45 years Jolene Hoff has opened the Boy Scout Service Center, raised the American flag, Jolene Hoff made a pot of coffee, and began her daily routine of helping boys, leaders, parents and staff make a difference in their lives. She greets everyone with a hearty “hello” and “may I help you?” It is that word “help” that many who enter the Trading Post pass as rhetoric or dismiss as just a cordial greeting, but it is the word “help” that Jolene speaks

from the heart. “Jolene truly cares about her customers and the mission of the Boy Scouts of America,” said Scout Executive and CEO, Danny Tucker. “She takes great pride in learning people’s names, and as a result of her tenure, she has become quite the council historian.” For many boys, Jolene is best known for handling the Eagle Scout Rank processing. For years, she has made sure the “I’s” are dotted and the “T’s” are crossed on every application before it is sent to National BSA. When you think of the hundreds of Eagles Scouts that have gone on to become great leaders in their business, industry and in community service in Kern, Inyo and Mono counties, you can agree that Jolene has far impacted the quality of life and leadership in our local communities.

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, June 6 for a gala event. The evening will consist of great food, fun and fellowship and will properly recognize the historic contribution Jolene Hoff has made to the Southern Sierra Council. The evening will begin at 5 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 1705 17th St. Cost is $25 per person. Donations are also being accepted to provide Jolene a special gift and a contribution to the Council’s endowment fund; a lasting gift in her honor to forever provide for the Scouting program she has devoted so much time too. Reservations may be made at the council office at 325-9036 or online at: www.sscbsa.org. Spread the word — there are 45 years worth of friends, family and alumni that should be invited to attend, and we hope they all can join us.

Mr. Rhodes Nominated by Guadalupe Hernández

I’d like to nominate my twin daughters’ kindergarten teacher Mr. Rhodes who teaches at Discovery Elementary School. At the beginning of the year, I was so skeptical after having learned that they were going to have a male teacher for kindergarten. He has superseded all of my expectations as to what a great kindergarten teacher should be. My girls love Mr. Rhodes. He teaches them lots of cute and silly songs. He builds up their self-esteem. He is just so marvelous with my girls!

Business lessons help fund Kenyan school BY MICHELLE OLINGER Community contributor

W

hat do all schools have in common? Think beyond state standards, benchmarks and budget cuts. Think about the “reason”

for schools. No matter where they are or whom they serve, all schools have the same purpose — to prepare students for success and to be productive citizens. I was lucky enough, a few years ago, to go on an African safari. On that trip my husband and I, both educators, got to visit a local school. This school was very remote, yet more than 65 students, ranging in age from 4 to 15 years old, greeted us outside. Each wore a school uniform, some with holes, some way too big, and many students were shoeless. They automatically lined up by height and sang us several African Songs. The young teacher invited us into the school. As we left the students on their

playground, it quickly became apparent that their playground was simply that; a ground on which to play. There were no slides, swings, balls, or sports equipment. The school was very bare,

This week’s Star Athlete: Sonny Garcia Nominated by Paul Garcia The 2009 Bakersfield Southwest Baseball (BSWB) season is well on its way. Sonny Garcia, 7, is playing his second year of BSWB. He played for the Padres last year and Giants in the North of the River (NOR) league two years ago. He is having a great season so far! He has hit every time he has been up to bat and plays the field well. Sonny and his team have only played five games so far and are doing great. They are improving and looking forward to a great season. He also has played soccer, flag football and wrestled.

with nothing close to what American schools enjoy. The students had no books, paper, pencils, running water, sinks, or bathrooms. Their desks consisted of hardwood benches with slanted tables. There was no electricity. We asked a few questions and talked with the teacher briefly. We left feeling sad for what their school lacked. In that barren school, my life changed. Although the school had very little, there was no self-pity from the teacher or the students. They don’t know what they don’t have! I saw that learning and teaching happens everywhere, and even those who aren’t as lucky as we are, find ways to teach and prepare their children to be good citizens. Since 2007, I have used this learning lesson to teach my sixth-graders about the importance of helping others. I developed the “Kids Caring for Kenya” project in my class, and throughout the school year, my students become pen pals with our adopted school in Kenya called Kimng’oror Primary School. During the last month of school, my

students develop a small business. They write a small business plan, complete with a mission statement, marketing ideas, projected customers, and a breakdown of their management, organization, and economic budget. They use unit-rate to breakdown cost, and price their products to make a profit. These entrepreneurs manage their own inventory and money. At the end of the month, all profits go to our adopted school in Kenya. My first class in 2006-07 earned $723, which funded many renovations, clothed 20 orphans in school uniforms, paid for four temporary teachers, and bought books for the classrooms. Last year, the class earned $1,068, which provided many more renovations like painting, fixing broken doors and windows, purchasing a bicycle for teachers to use to attend zonal meetings, purchased playground equipment like volleyball nets and balls, and bought story books and textbooks. This year my students earned $1,715 plus! We won’t know what they will get Please see KENYAN / PAGE 7

Local athletics shifts to high gear this spring!

L

ocal roundup time ... Whew! Busy, busy spring here in Bako and Kern County regarding all sorts of sports! Sky high for Jelmini — Shafter High’s Anna Jelmini is “putting on the ritz” and putting the shot as well! The national record holder in the discus just completed a Central Section sweep by taking both events recently in Fresno. Sky’s the limit for the ubertalented General! Repeat rivalry — Stockdale and Centennial were at it again recently in the quarter finals of the Central Section baseball playoffs. Sports columnist

MICHAEL ELLIOTT

The Mustangs pulled off the season hat-trick as they out-slugged the ‘Hawks 11-8 at Stockdale to win all three tilts for the year. ‘Runners baseball on cusp — Hey, don't think for a second that CSUB’s 13-37 inaugural baseball record doesn't come with SOME caveats! They played a very tough schedule, took their knocks and came away with a wealth of experience to carry into next season. And Coach Bill Kernen is just the right guy to commandeer the ship as he has dealt with starting programs in the past. Look for at least 10 more wins from the ‘Runners in year two. So that’s who he was! — Four years ago, this columnist was entered in a KCTA tennis tournament at Stockdale Country Club in the spring, which allowed junior tennis players to play in the tournament with the adults. I was cruising along in the tournament at the 4.0 level and wound up

facing this scrawny, reed-thin junior player in a later round. As I saw him walk onto the court I filed the victory away in my mind and began wondering who my next opponent would be. I was ready for a “practice”match with this kid. Forty minutes later, I was out of the tournament with embarrassment on my face and my tail between my legs as I attempted to nonchalantly disappear from the scene of the crime. The kid had pilfered me! The sting had been on! And Jeremy Quiroz had counted me as another victim, while he eventually worked his way to two Central Section tennis titles representing Stockdale High. Jeremy, I know you don’t remember me but I’ll never forget you and am very proud to say that I once helped to refine your game. CASEY CHRISTIE / THE CALIFORNIAN Oh, and you owe me some cream Shafter's Anna Jelmini competes in the cheese for those two bagels you shot put during the Central Section track served up to me that day (6-0, 6-0)! and field championships.
