HIGH NOTE FOR METSTRADE 2022
METSTRADE 2022 saw 1,400 exhibitors from 49 countries across ten halls covering every facet of marine equipment, systems and materials.
The show saw 26,480 visits registered by 17,417 unique visitors spanning 126 nationalities and 6,175 exhibitor personnel, with 23% of visitors aged 18-35.
Career development was celebrated by several initiatives and in a first for the show, day two began with a breakfast networking and panel Women in Marine Industry event.
The METSTRADE Theatre was a key feature in the reimagined Hall 13, with a series of presentations, including on new technologies and the drive towards a more sustainable sector.
Also in Hall 13, products from the 48 winners and nominees
of this year’s DAME Design Awards were displayed.
The show featured revised layouts for METSTRADE, and the SuperYacht, Marina & Yard and Construction Material Pavilions, as well as a new Superyacht Sustainability Route.
There was also the return of associated programmes including the SuperYacht Forum Live, International HISWA Symposium and HISWA Marina Symposium.
“We wanted to ensure that METSTRADE was completely fit for purpose in resuming its critical role as the epicentre for the whole global marine leisure sector during three very busy days in Amsterdam,” said Niels Klarenbeek, METSTRADE Maritime Director.
Navionics co-founder dies
Navionics co-founder and long-time leader Giuseppe Carnevali has died at the age of 74.
Serving as Navionics president and CEO for almost 30 years, Giuseppe co-invented the first electronic chart display system for recreational yachts and is credited with numerous marine innovations such as auto-routing technology, user-generated cartography and the development of vector charts used in the GPS-enabled chartplotters.
He served a tour of duty in the Italian navy and participated in sail racing competitions, winning two national championships.
Once his naval career ended, he served
as production manager of the Benetti Shipyard. In the early 1980s, Giuseppe combined his background in the maritime industry with his navigational and computer graphics experience to create with the world’s first electronic charting device and launched Navionics in 1984. Giuseppe retired in 2017 after selling Navionics to Garmin, and the following year the National Marine Manufacturers Association recognised his contributions with the Alan J. Freedman Memorial Leadership Award and the Italian Marine Industry Association’s Boating Pioneer.

Mervyn Cook designer of the iconic Magnum series which won 8 Worlds, 10 Europeans, 19 UK National Championships, has died after a long illness.x
Mervyn had a long interest in sailing boats with his first boat being a British Moth dinghy which he sailed on the River Thames in the late 1950s.
Having raced different Moths, he soon began designing his own, convinced that relatively high rocker displacement boats, generally the norm in development classes, were not the fastest way to go.
In the early 1970s, his brother-in-law, John Claridge, had just set up a business building racing dinghies and so Mervyn designed a new boat for him, a new departure for the class, which became the first of his famous Magnum line of designs.
Over the years, Mervyn’s rethinking of dinghy design caused changes to the Portsmouth Yardstick ratings for handicap racing. He also designed to the National 12 and

International 14 dinghy class rules and served on the International Yacht Racing Union technical committee – now the World Sailing Governing Body - and was an official measurer for the Moth class as well as contributing to ideas for Moth sail area measurement rules.
He became interested in sailing International One Metre sailboats and applied to be an official measurer for this and the 7ft model A class in 2007,
actively sailing both classes from Gosport.
Speed on water was always his objective and more recently, he enjoyed the excitement of Mini40 multihull racing and the new design challenges.
As well as enjoying the racing at Gosport, Mervyn repaid the club by becoming the Commodore in 2013.
Mervyn is survived by his wife Jacque.
15% SALES GROWTH FOR BOATBUILDER
Group Beneteau saw sales growth of 15% during 2022, with income from operations climbing more than 30% to 125 million euros.
Presenting the outlook, Bruno Thivoyon, Groupe Beneteau CEO, and Gianguido Girotti, Boat Division CEO said 2022 will come in significantly ahead of schedule, driven by revenue growth of close to 12% for the Boat Division and nearly 35% for its Housing Division.
Consolidated revenues are expected to exceed 1.4 billion euros, up by 15% from 2021.
Beneteau’s Boat Division is targeting average annual growth of 10% by 2025.
In the Motor segments, annual sales growth is expected to reach 12% to 14% by 2025, with 7% to 10% for the sailing segments.
Production capacity has been increased for Dayboats and production capacity will continue to be increased for 40 to 60ft yachts.
The Prestige brand is developing a range of 50 to 70ft motor catamarans, to be rolled out alongside long-range cruising models offered by Beneteau’s Trawlers line.
The Group is continuing to develop its digital platform, Seanapps. 2,000 boats were equipped in
2022 and more than 20,000 will be connected by 2025.
And the Group is also continuing to develop its new charter business lines having entered the sector in 2021.
Ten new Boat Club bases have opened in the US bringing the total number of bases to 35. Beneteau aims to triple this number with a fleet of around 1,000 boats across Europe and the US.

It’s not all bad
As we look back on another year, it’s a time to reflect on the last 12 months and make plans for the year ahead.
2022 was the first proper year of trading since Covid and adjusting to new working patterns, staffing issues and supply issues has taken its toll on a lot of people and businesses.
Everyone has maximised the year to its full potential, but everyone I’ve spoken to has been chasing their tails and running out of time at every corner.
As always there’s been the pressure across the industry as a whole and its employees to not only perform and supply products but also to develop and grow.
However there is still a limited number of people to do the work and especially a limited number of skilled staff
One of the key challenges this last year has been the difficulties in not only finding good quality staff but also retaining them.
There are ongoing skill set shortages, finding people who understand selling and also a lack of technical people.
And then there are still situations where people are struggling with mental health issues post covid.
With many having worked from home for two years during the Covid pandemic isolated in our own individual offices, returning to the office, even for hybrid working has needed a readjustment.
At the start of the pandemic, no-one had any inkling it would last so long. When we went into lock-down, we thought it was going to be for two or three weeks. How wrong we were.
And then when we could all get out and about again, it was an amazing feeling. Meeting colleagues and friends again at shows. And while being amongst a group of people talking face to face felt strange, it demonstrated that we do still want the shows and events.
The recent METSTRADE is an example in point. The first proper edition for three years was buzzing with a hugely positive vibe.
And reports from those exhibiting were very encouraging.
2023 looks set to have its own challenges. There are still the after-effects of the lockdowns and the pandemic to deal with, and there are still big problems getting hold of certain products.
Suppliers are still having problems getting paid on time and there are ongoing economic problems.
The New Year will no doubt still involve managing expectations from customers, understanding their needs and supporting them, but the marine industry is nothing but resilient.
There will be bumps along the road but there will also be opportunities to be taken.
Despite the difficulties in 2022, a large number of businesses have had record years despite boatbuilders reducing the number of boats produced due to equipment shortages.
I hope that everyone has a very Happy Christmas and a relaxing break ready to start the New Year afresh.

How I got into this industry...
In 1990, I was asked to head up the Media & Public Relations division of the USA’s largest organisation of recreational boat owners, BoatUS (Boat Owners Association of the United States). It’s been a great ride ever since.
Best advice I’ve ever received...
Don’t be afraid to upset the apple cart. For a long time our industry was resistant to change.
One thing the industry needs less of is...
Boat shows. We’ve seen some trimming in recent
years, but I think taking a regional approach instead of a city-to-city approach would be more beneficial to exhibitors and more attractive to visitors.
Most hated buzzword or workplace expression... When someone is being interviewed and asked a question and they begin their response with “That’s a great question”. I just roll my eyes.
Best place I’ve been... The summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Don't worry about... What you didn’t do yesterday.
Favourite meal... Insalata alla David, Lasagna alla Bolognese and
a nice Chianti at Casa di David in Amsterdam. A tradition during METSTRADE every year.
One thing I couldn’t live without... A strong cup of coffee in the morning.
How I cope with stress... A good walk to clear the head does it for me.
Something about you that people might be surprised by...
I’m just a rock and roller at heart. Have seen the Stones 23 times, Springsteen 19 times, the list goes on and on.

£11m debts
Around £11 million of debts were left when the Isle of Wight’s Island Harbour marina went into administration.
Administrator Steven Lancaster was called in after the marina, owned by Uavent Investments ceased trading.
In his report, the administrator says during the Covid pandemic, there was a significant effect on turnover with clientele finding it difficult to travel to the island and a Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme £250,000 facility was taken out.
This loan was later defaulted upon.
In late August / early September 2021, the Partnership instructed insolvency practitioners to assist with a pre-pack sale of the marina.
The property was put on the market with several offers received and the marketing agent recommended one of the offers was accepted.
The proposed purchase was stated to be independent said the report, however research showed the party had previously shared common directorships with the Partners and still had connections to other operational facilities on the Island Harbour site.
Nine employees were made redundant while five were retained with an hourly rate of pay.
The administrator’s report states the land and buildings have an estimated book value of £8.15m, however, there are around £11 million of debts, with outstanding wages of nearly £23,000 and unsecured creditors of £1.1 million.
The net property of the partnership is estimated to be less than £10,000.
The company shareholders are Eamon O’Connor, of Tavira, Santiago, Portugal, and Kevin Webb of Harefield, Uxbridge, UK.

A time of hope?
Well, hello, it’s been a while.
During the last five years of monastic life mostly spent roaming between the cloister, refectory and it must be said the brewery, I have oft thought back to the simple joys that the British marine industry brought to this Winterville time of year.
This was always a time of hope, of getting the parts actually needed for those always critical year end boats; a time of wishing that all the staff were not taking most of the year end off by using untaken holiday; but mainly praying that one day, the lord willing, you would get paid for all your endeavours, or at least within 120 days over agreed terms, oh happy days indeed.
I am sure though on the bright side these memories are very much the ghosts of Winterville far, far past, surely the last five years must have seen a massive improvement in supply/ customer operations, business systems, professionalism and of course working together in harmony.
We are after all, all in this together - professionally communicating, respecting past support and knowledge, collaborating positively and joining up opportunities to ensure that you have never had it so good.
Blessed are those who make it through another marine industry year. Raise a glass to those who have departed our band and remember to attach your safety line so you can always be pulled back in.
So, to 2023 what could possibly go wrong that already has not I say...
Pendennis has netted more than half a million pounds profit in 2021 owing largely to the strength of the home market.
The company’s accounts show turnover for the shipyard group was up in from £35,851,365 in 2020 to £42,291,284 in 2021 with profit up from £7,510,841 to £10,704,877.
Most of the revenue came from the UK, with £30,857,422 worth of business, up from £22,196,012 in 2020.
“We are so proud of the determination within our workforce to adapt to new ways of working and overcome the challenges facing us all,” Mike Carr, chairman and founding partner, said in the company’s magazine, Voyage.
Staff development
In 2021, Pendennis continued to invest in staff training and development by providing existing staff with access to graduate programmes.
By investing in its people in combination with facilities upgrades, the company said it will be able to continue to meet and exceed clients’ expectations.
STRONG YEAR FOR PENDENNIS
During the year, the Falmouth yard restored the 1930s Camper & Nicholson’s motor yacht Marala, which Mr Carr said took place at the right time when times were becoming tougher on the global business front.
Pendennis’ Vilanova Grand Marina facility in Barcelona meanwhile, has gone from strength to strength with development underway to enhance its range of services for yachts seeking technical work in the Med.
Since 2019, Vilanova has become a technical service centre of expertise and a marina equipped with 48 superyacht berths.
And Mike explained that that the company is increasingly being asked to help clients make informed and intelligent choices on sustainable options. Next year will bring several major project launches for Pendennis, as well as its 35th anniversary.
Pendennis was born out of a local yacht building
rm that was acquired by Peter de Savary and then relocated to Falmouth Docks in 1988.
fi
A management buyout in 1993 by Mike Carr and Henk Wiekens was followed by the company’s first project - a major rebuild of the 1903 classic 170ft schooner Adela.
Both Peter and Henk passed away in October 2022.
LICENCE FEES TO RISE BY 9%
The Canal & River Trust is to increase boat licence fees by 9% from 1 April 2023 for both private boat owners and boating businesses.
When combined with the interim increase introduced from 1 October 2022, this will mean an overall year-on-year increase of 13% for those renewing an annual boat licence in the period from 1 April until 30 September 2023.
The Trust says it is facing significant increases in a range of its costs, particularly the price of energy, fuel, materials and other construction costs, leading to a projected shortfall in the Trust’s

INLAND BOATING AUTUMN CONFERENCE
More than 70 British Marine members gathered at Worcester County Cricket Club for the association’s Inland Boating and Midlands region annual Autumn networking and conference, reports Robert Parton, Aqueduct Marina MD.
The members represented a crosssection of interests from inland hire boats, marinas, engine suppliers, insurance, holiday booking agencies, marina pontoons and finance and the event also included senior representatives of British Marine (BM), the Canal and River Trust (C&RT), and the Environment Agency (EA).
Various topics were discussed including the Hire Boat Code and Quality assured Boat Yard accreditation scheme which was led by BM’s Ross Wombwell.
The topic is particularly relevant with recent changes to licensing requirements for hire boats, including new boat stability tests.
C&RT’s presentation highlighted its water resource issues and the extremely low water levels experienced on the more northern canals during 2022.
The situation was not helped by the ongoing closure of Toddbrook reservoir, one of the main
feeder reservoirs for the Macclesfield Canal.
Levels continue to remain a concern for 2023.
The presentation, in Worcester, was somewhat ironic as, looking out of the window, the River Severn was slowly flooding and engulfing the car park outside.
The issue of the ongoing delay by the government of any announcement for the future funding agreement for the C&RT was also raised. There was a recent debate in Westminster on the topic, but it may soon be time for a more determined push to lobby the government and remind our MPs of the value to
the wider community and environment of vibrant, open and sustainable inland navigation.
There followed presentations on the continuing trend of new boats going for hybrid and electric propulsion systems, the potential impact of an economic downturn on boating, recent work carried out by BM on its H&S Code of Practice, and lobbying of government and the Department of Business, Energy and industrial strategy (BEIS) to gain a better understanding of energy price caps and the real concerns over the closure of Sunbury Dry Dock on the Thames.

INDUSTRY VETERAN DIES
Mike Barry, well known to many as an industry veteran who rarely missed any major boat show event in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, has died.
Mike started his marine industry advertising sales career working on Boat World and later with Sells Marine Market.
He loved to travel and felt honoured to run stands at the London Boat Show where he often extended his ‘office’ to the Guinness stand.
After Sells, Mike became self-employed and worked for Boating Business and the Cruising Association. He moved on to represent Local Boating full time.
Slow to say goodbye to the industry, Mike expertly ran the Marina World stand at METSTRADE, Amsterdam until he reached his 80th year. He then enjoyed a
full and happy retirement although he missed his friends in the marine trade and the buzz
of the boat shows.
Mike was much-loved, as a husband to Gill, and a father and grandfather.

New initiatives and world firsts
The two day Yacht Racing Forum and Design & Technology Symposium in Malta has sought to address the health of the sport after two years of disruption with gender equality and equal opportunities prominent on the agenda.
During the event, 250 delegates from 23 nationalities discussed how the sport’s status, visibility and commercial attractiveness could be improved and what its future will be both from a technological and commercial point of view.
This year’s event saw speakers discussing youth access to the sport and the commercial potential of sailing. But they also took on how the sport can benefit from blockchain technology and detailed some legal implications of the Covid pandemic.
Lean management concepts have also been implemented throughout the company, starting with product design and continuing through the manufacturing, distribution and aftersales support stages. The company will soon produce its two hundred thousandth electric motor and has filed more than 250 patents.
Investment
Largs Yacht Haven has invested in a new Wise 75 Ton Wise hoist. The hoist will replace the ageing 45 Ton hoist that has been at the site for more than 30 years and will be used alongside the existing 70 Ton hoist allowing flexible lifting in the boatyard which operates seven days a week.
Along with the increase in lifting capacity, the new hoist has additional safety features including improved LED lighting to make emergency nighttime lifts safer. The hoist is operated via remote control and there are automatic monitoring sensors that feedback realtime data to the manufacturers. The delivery comes off the back of similar investments across Yacht Havens Group which owns and operates Largs Yacht Haven.

8 Debbie Hutton and Derek Shakespeare have served a collective 85 years at Wilks
As the country emerges from the worst of the pandemic into a post Brexit world where labour is in short supply, energy prices are crippling businesses and consumers alike, and inflation is at its highest level for over 40 years, it is widely predicted that the country is heading for one of the biggest recessions for decades.
Corporate failures have already seen a sharp upturn and therefore, against this backdrop, it is more important than ever that directors are aware of their duties to their company and its creditors in order to avoid the risk of personal liability.
Duties under law
Directors’ statutory duties owed to a company are set out in Sections 171 to 177 of the Companies Act 2006 and they are as follows:
5 s.171.Duty to act within powers (as set out in the company’s constitution)
5 s.172.Duty to promote the success of the company
5 s.173.Duty to exercise independent judgment
5 s.174.Duty to exercise reasonable care, skill and diligence
5 s.175.Duty to avoid conflicts of interest
5 s.176.Duty not to accept benefits from third parties
5 s.177.Duty to declare interest in proposed transaction or arrangement
If directors breach any of these duties they can be sued by the company, or a liquidator or administrator of the company, and required to compensate the company for losses arising from the breach.
Where a company begins to encounter financial difficulties, it has long been established that directors also owe duties to the creditors. But the point at which that duty is engaged has long been the subject of argument and

acquires the business of the insolvent company from a liquidator or administrator and notice is given to all the creditors of the insolvent company within 28 days, and iii. the new company has been actively carrying on business for 12 months before the insolvency of the old company.
However, the individual circumstances of each case will determine which, if any, of the above options are available so it is essential to seek professional advice.

judicial scrutiny. However, in October 2022 the Supreme Court handed down its judgment in the case of BTI 2014 LLC v Sequana which has provided some clarity on this issue. Although this was not a unanimous decision, and the judges gave different reasons for their decisions, they agreed that where a company is bordering on insolvency, actually cashflow or balance sheet insolvent or where insolvent liquidation or administration is probable, directors have a duty to consider and must have regard to the interests of creditors in the way they conduct the business of the company.
From the point at which insolvent liquidation or administration cannot be avoided, directors have a duty to prioritise the interests of creditors because it is creditors alone who have an interest in the outcome of the insolvency process. In these circumstances, in order to establish liability on the part of the directors, the onus is upon the insolvency office holder to establish the point in time when
the directors knew, or ought to have known, that liquidation or administration were inevitable. Where liability is established, the directors can be ordered to compensate the company for the losses caused by the breach and these funds will be paid into the insolvency estate for distribution amongst creditors.
There is overlap between a claim for breach of duty to prioritise the interests of creditors and a claim for wrongful trading under Section 214 of the Insolvency Act 1986. Here, a liquidator or administrator can bring a claim for wrongful trading against a director in circumstances where the director knew, or should have known, that the company could not avoid insolvent liquidation or administration but carried on trading regardless, such that when liquidation or administration commenced the loss to creditors had increased. In these circumstances a director can be ordered to pay a sum equivalent to the increase in the deficit between the point trading
ought to have ceased and the date of actual cessation.
Restrictions after insolvency Directors should also be aware of restrictions on the re-use of company names in circumstances where a company goes into liquidation, as set out in section 216 of the Insolvency Act 1986.
This section applies to a person who has been a director of a company at any time in the 12 months prior to the company going into insolvent liquidation. Such a person is prohibited for a period of five years from being a director of, or involved in the management of, a company with the same or a similar name. Breach of this prohibition is a criminal offence and renders the director personally liable for the debts of the company trading with a prohibited name.
There are three exceptions to this general prohibition which are: i. the director applies for, and the court gives, permission, ii. if the new company
Notably, in July 2022 the Court of Appeal upheld a decision of the High Court in the case of PSV 1982 Ltd v Langdon. The ruling stated that where a creditor establishes liability for repayment of a debt against a company trading with a prohibited name, the creditor may take steps to enforce the debt against the director without first having make a separate claim against the director under section 216. In this case, the director, Mr Langdon, was held liable for £1,125,824.67.
This may come as a surprise to a director, especially in circumstances where they were no longer a director at the time proceedings were commenced by the creditor against the company and, as such, had no opportunity to participate in the proceedings.
Summary
The law and rulings are clear and so, where directors have any concerns about the financial stability of their company they are strongly advised to seek professional advice in order to minimise the risks of personal liability.

A how to guide to distribution
The International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) has launched a distributors’ guide that will be available to its affiliated 37 marine industry associations.
Launched at METSTRADE, the guide has been written to assist anyone operating in the marine industry, whether boat dealers, distributors or boat builders, to develop and implement an international distributors’ network.
It includes advice on what makes a good distributor, making the right decision and avoiding “the wasted years”, doing essential homework, forming a sales and marketing strategy, legal issues and a social media guide.
Comprehensive guide
There are new sections on product marketing and on the use of social media networks to support development of distribution networks.
It has been written by David Barrow of Barrow International, with contributions by David Pilvelait of Homeport Global and Kate Porteous of New Forest Creative.
The guide goes hand in hand with the updated ICOMIA Distributors’ Database which features information about distributors in the marine industry from 28 countries.
Although the database is not considered complete it lists 375 global distributors.
Those that have been missed can apply to go on to the database, but applicants need to have five brands and be active in the leisure marine market.
The new guide and database are downloadable for members of ICOMIA associations.
AWARDS VICTORY FOR MES
Marine Energy Systems (MES) has had a fruitful 2022 with success at the WhisperPower awards, the opening of a new office and the introduction of two new brands.
The distributor was awarded Best OEM Sales of the year for WhisperPower at the WhisperPower Dealer & Distribution Conference held this November in Amsterdam. Technical director, Paul Bailey was also honoured with an award for his efforts in promoting and supporting WhisperPower’s OctoPower systems and products globally.
New brands
In 2022, MES became UK Quick’s full-service partner for its boat thrusters and the MC² Seacentric integrated stabilisation system. Unveiled at this year’s METSTRADE, the system combines three components – the Viator, Intercepta and Quick Gyro – for a ‘revolutionary stabilisation concept’.
Quick also produces a range of thrusters and separate fin and gyro stabilisers.
Also joining the MES portfolio is Stable on Board which manufactures drone platforms, luxury beds, radar tables and more, all designed to remain stable even during the most challenging sea conditions. Stable on Board produces the Unmanned
Aerial Vehicle drone platform which provides a steady take-off and landing stage for autonomous operations, both at sea or on a moving vehicle as well as a billiard table which incorporates a unique acceleration free technology ensuring that the billiard balls move only when hit and in straight lines when expected to.
During 2022 MES also opened its new Poole office in October. With an operational team led by director Nick Nutt, the office houses a team of engineers supporting local boat builders and training prospective local dealers.
TIMAGE WELCOMES NEW BRAND
Timage has welcomed a new brand to its portfolio.
From 2023, Timage will become a distributor for the well-established brand of Versari & Delmonte by Foresti & Suardi.
Foresti & Suardi, with whom Timage has worked for 45 years, took over the production and marketing of Versari & Delmonte accessories earlier this year in November.
Coming under Timage’s offerings will be Versari & Delmonte’s wide range of deck equipment including billets, cable glands and leads, concealed eyebolts, hinges, hatch handles and caps.
The brand also includes custom-made railings, adjustable height tables and carbon fibre poles for awnings.
Complete with accessories to stretch the canvas and invisible deck fittings, the awning poles are fully customisable in length
and available in diameters of 30, 43 and 68mm.
Timage has also recently unveiled a new carbon fibre and stainless steel boat

POSITIVE MOVE FOR DISTRIBUTOR
The introduction of Aquafax’s training facility at Hamble has proved to be a positive move for the distributor, providing the opportunity of technical training for customers.
The facility offers the distributor an important technical learning space to build customer product knowledge and provide training for its growing installing dealer network.
This year the Aquafax Technical Team working in partnership with manufacturers has
supported training for a wide range of marine industry technical specialists and engineers, covering technical brands
including B&G, Blue Sea Systems, BEP, Czone, Lowrance and Mastervolt.
The distributor plans to roll out further customer technical training sessions in 2023 adding more key brands to the program including Quick and Ultraflex.
During 2022 Aquafax expanded its range of lithium-ion batteries with the introduction of RELion to its portfolio.
“With more boats seeing the benefits of lithium-ion technology, the RELion product range offers a wide
opportunity to small and mid-sized installations,” said Richard Pardoe, Group Technical Product Manager. “The Attwood range of bilge pumps, shower sumps and blowers has also been an important introduction with further products planned for 2023.”
In addition, the Quick product range of windlasses, thrusters, gyros, hot water boilers and lighting has seen growth with Aquafax including the recent introduction of the DP2L 770 compact vertical windlass kit.
This is aimed at small boats up to 26ft, with the kit includes switch panel, circuit breaker and foot switches offering a comprehensive installation package for the installer.
Looking ahead to 2023, Aquafax is planning new product ranges from Navico Group with more brands to be introduced to complement the electronics, electrical and technical product ranges.
Further developments are in progress to expand a range of bronze, DZR and brass valves, strainers and plumbing fittings from Maestrini. Aquafax is also working with Johnson Pump with plans for new product launches of bilge pumps and engine cooling pumps for the coming season.
Lastly, Aquafax has reviewed its range of LPG marine cookers from Leisure Products and introduced ceramic hobs and griddles to the product range with stock planned ready for early 2023.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN 2022
For Midland Chandlers, 2022 presented both challenges and opportunities in terms of supply chain and distribution of product to the inland boating market.
8 One of the focuses for Midland Chandlers in 2022 has been on multi-fuel and wood burning stoves
ASAP Supplies has been busy during 2022 expanding on both existing and new product ranges, furthering its commitment to supporting customers.
This has been a key focus area considering the challenges the industry has faced, particularly component shortages and inflation.
One example of ASAP’s efforts to expand on aftermarket parts supply was the introduction of Sierra Marine and Orbitrade, which provide OEM aftermarket parts for inboard, outboard engines and drives, covering brands such as Volvo, Yanmar, Mercury, Suzuki, Yamaha and Mercruiser.
ASAP Supplies has found this to be a growing sector due to the availability of components from OEM, which has also benefited customers from a cost saving.
Moreover, it has enabled customers to avoid downtime and repair existing engines that are no longer supported.
ASAP has also introduced a range of Kannad Marine safety equipment including EPIRB’s, PLB’s and MOB’s and has invested in training its team to help educate customers in best practice.
Other additions this year have included U-pol fillers, Raptor protective coatings, Blue Sea Systems, Owatrol boat care products and Volvo Sail drive propellers.
One focus for Midland Chandlers is on multi-fuel and wood burning stoves, their flue systems and the installation of the systems.
They are working closely with both stove manufacturers and British Marine to understand the changes in governance when it comes to emissions with all stoves sold in the UK having to meet Ecodesign standards.
Midland Chandler’s close working relationship with Arada has allowed representatives to visit the company’s Devon based manufacturing facility, while with Morso the team has been able to see how the manufacture of stoves has had to change, to meet the new standards of efficiency, and how flue systems play a factor in this.
In 2023, Midland
Chandlers will work with an insulated flue systems manufacturer to further develop its range.
Solar systems are becoming more popular in the inland sector and Midland Chandler’s range of Victron and Sterling Power products has grown, including solar panels, MPPT charge controllers, power distribution and battery charging accessories.
Historically Midland Chandlers has listed a snapshot of the range of products available from Shoreline but this year the distributor introduced almost the entire range of products available from the low voltage fridge and freezer manufacturer.
The business relationship allows the distributor to influence the product range, giving direct market feedback to the manufacturer, leading to new lines being added or
re-introduced, such as the Hire Fleet model fridge, and the black larder fridge, which is proving popular in the new build market.
Shoreline works closely
with its supplier of 12V compressor units, meaning that the products entering the marketplace through Midland Chandlers have the latest technology in terms of refrigeration.
NEW LIGHTS FOR UK DISTRIBUTOR
Over the last 12 months, Meridian Zero has seen the introduction of several new key product lines.
New from Germany are K2W LED navigation lights featuring an aluminium body and borosilicate glass.
The lights have low energy consumption making them suitable for craft with limited battery capacity.
The lights measure 64 by 54mm with most lamps suitable for craft up to 50m (20m for tricolour/tri-white).
Meridian Zero is the sole UK distributor. The distributor also has begun importing a range of varnished ash wooden blocks from Poland
for Tall Ships and yachts. “They are fully functional and can be stripped to component parts for maintenance and varnishing,” explained James Turner, director of marketing for Meridian Zero.
The blocks are available in single, double or triple sheave, with fixed heads, swivels and beckets.
The Flipper is a new folding winch handle from Easysea. The handle folds onto the top of the winch
making it easier for users who want a winch handle in a hurry.
“A handle left in a winch is traditionally considered poor practice, but not so with Flipper, because when folded it isn’t a trip hazard, and it’s easy to handle the rope without fouling on the handle,” said James.
Meridian Zero also a wholesaler of TruDesign ball valves and skin fittings.
Made in New Zealand, TruDesign ball valves, skin fitting and associated products are made of glass-filled nylon composite and are free from galvanic corrosion and electrolysis.

At the start of 2022, C-Quip learnt that one of its key suppliers, Aqua Signal, was leaving the marine recreational market.
“It was a shock to us to hear that long-established lighting manufacturer Aqua Signal was exiting from the recreation lighting market,” explained Ian Cooke, C-Quip MD.
“As the largest recreational distributor in the world, we were under pressure to find a suitable replacement quickly and were extremely pleased so enter into a new agreement with the highly regarded Hella Marine from New Zealand.”
In addition to a new lighting supplier, C-Quip has begun a new distribution agreement with Douglas Marine from Italy, with the company’s marine hardware and mooring shock absorbers.

LEAD TIMES INCREASE FOR DISTRIBUTOR
2022 for MCI saw one of its main suppliers announcing increased lead times from 60 days to a predicted 90 days.
But in real terms, partially due to material shortages, shipping was almost 180 days, meaning forecasting needed to increase for ordering and stockholding also had to increase and be paid for earlier.
“This is not all bad, as it means that with our higher stock levels, we can supplier quicker in most cases,” explained Andy Scott, MCI MD.
Another issue facing the distributor – which buys many of its products in US dollars - has been the exchange rates. With rates
falling, MCI has faced an extra 10% increase in costs.
“All the above being said, we are having a good year,” added Andy. “Our business has increased on last year.”
And Andy puts part of this down to investing in exhibitions that the company would not have usually exhibited at.
Product wise, the
TEMO·450 electric outboard, that was launched late in 2021, has achieved the target numbers for the year, with more than 30 dealers in the UK and Channel Islands appointed. The new TEMO·1000 will come to market in 2023.
MCI took on the Calypso range on Ultrasonic Wind Instruments in 2022 and has also recently taken on Revolve Tech’s rollable boat hook, accessories and emergency antenna, which won the Safety productcategory at IBEX and received a special mention at METSTRADE.
In addition, there has been a collaboration between one of MCI’s brands, Echopilot, and Raymarine, which is now integrating the Echopilot Forward Looking Sonar, (FLS3D), with the Axiom displays via Raynet, allowing first-time users to have the benefit of a forward 3D picture of the seabed up to 20 x depth.

systems and their full range of hardware.
New to the market is Onward Marine’s cleaning product range designed to be used as a re-fill station system in retail outlets.
In 2023, C-Quip will add new solar powered navigation lights, along with an increased range of lighting from both Hella and Båtsystem in Sweden.
There will also be new carbon fittings, folding Director’s Chairs and boating lifestyle accessories from Båtsystem’s Waterline Design and Lagun cockpit table bracket systems including a RIB boarding ladder.
A new catalogue will be available in the New Year which will include a wide range of new products including stainless steel fittings and hardware, lighting and touch switch panels.

Bow to stern equipment
Barrus’s Marine Equipment Division saw several introductions to its portfolio in 2022, starting with a new distribution agreement with Scanstrut.
Barrus now supplies the full range of products and installs Scanstrut products as standard on all Zodiac RIBs.
In August, Barrus announced a new distribution agreement with marine and RV product manufacturer, SEAFLO, which specialises in the research, design and manufacture of water system and ventilation products.
Barrus was also appointed as the exclusive UK distributor for CMP Europe’s brands, including Rocna and Vulcan anchors, Titan Marine, Dock Edge+ and Panther Marine Products. The Rocna Mk II which launched at METSTRADE, is an enhancement of the Rockna anchor and will be available for the 2023 season.
Under a new agreement with Beneteau, Barrus is now the UK distributor for the Flyer Range and the Antares range of outboard boats.
Other key developments for Barrus include the launch by Mercury Marine of its Avator electric outboard concept and the introduction of its 25 and 30hp four-stroke outboards. Most recently, Mercury announced the industry’s first V10 outboards – the 350 and 400hp Verado engines.
“We’ve seen another record-breaking sales year and thanks must go to all our remarkable trade customers and the dedicated team here at Barrus,” said Ben Allen, Head of Marine at Barrus. “We are thrilled to commence new partnerships with Beneteau, WhisperPower, SEAFLO and CMP, who alongside our existing brands, put us in the unique position of being the only UK distributor to offer a market leading portfolio from bow to stern.”
BUSY 2022 FOR NEW DISTRIBUTOR
Jason Slingo set up Marinetrade a year ago and since then has taken on several brands and products to supply.
Albin Group Marine has been manufacturing pumps and engines since 1911 and the company’s expanding range also includes, electric and manual toilets, replacement impellers, water heaters, ventilation blowers and the new Gobius Tank Monitoring System which was nominated for a DAME Award at this year’s METSTRADE show.
Another new brand is Marine 16, manufacturer of fuel additives, biological and general maintenance products with key products including Diesel Bug Treatment, a broad-spectrum biocide formulated to prevent or eradicate the microbial contamination of fuel from yeast, mould and bacteriaknown as Diesel Bug.

Another key brand for Marinetrade is Ciret that manufactures painting and decorating products.
The company is part of the Storch Holdings group and operates in 17 countries with over 1,400 employees and an annual turnover of more than 200 million Euros.
Products include brushes, rollers, trays, tools, tapes, knives, scrappers and abrasives.
MARATHON LEISURE ENJOYS RECORD YEAR
Despite supply chain disruption earlier in the season, Marathon Leisure has enjoyed a record year of sales in 2022.
The distributor has taken on four new brands and opened 1,000ft of new warehousing space to meet demand.
“Supply in most part – still some component issues – is now back to pre-pandemic levels with suppliers reporting available capacities,” said Oliver Cook, Marathon Leisure MD.
“Several key suppliers have expanded to supply the surge in demand,” he added. One such company is Johnson Outdoors Fishing, which encompasses brands Humminbird, Minn Kota and Cannon which between
them produce a wide range of angling gear including fish finders, MFDs, trolling motors, anchors, battery chargers and downrigger products and accessories.
LifeJacket Skin Protection’s range of products is aimed at preventing skin damage and cancers amongst men. With the tagline
‘We’ve got your back’, the company produces sun creams, moisturisers and UPF clothing. Also new to Marathon is Matromarine, a global firm which produces toilets, pumps, lights, horns, switches and other accessories for leisure boats from its factory
near Genoa in Italy. New products include a series of Aerators bilge pumps, new 12V searchlight, 32L manual waste water pump and an oil changer pump.
Sika Marine provides direct glazing, teak decking, acoustic flooring systems and sealing and bonding materials for leisure boats, commercial vessels and offshore platforms. The company’s range of flooring products all have a levelling aspect as well as reducing noise and vibrations.
Finally, from 5 December, Marathon will also be distributing products from Plastimo’s large portfolio which ranges from safety and personal equipment through to mooring and tenders, deck equipment, powerboat engines, navigation aids and more.

CHALLENGING 2022 FOR ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTORS
2022 was a challenging year for many manufacturers reliant on electronic components, challenges which were passed down to marine electronic distributors such as SM Group Europe (SMG), says marketing manager Sam Adams.
However, he says SMG has been able to celebrate a year of successes which is partly due to the relationships it has with its suppliers, but also the addition of many new brands and products.
The Norwegian brand, Thrustme has developed an electric outboard motor that is lightweight - 3.5Kg+ - and also available in a form suitable for kayaks and canoes without the need for any modification.
Rebelcell manufactures powerful, lightweight and durable lithium-ion batteries and chargers that
Over the last few months, International Marine Products (IMP) has added a number of key lines to its range.
Shadow-Caster, the Florida-based marine lighting and controls manufacturer, appointed IMP as its exclusive UK distributor for its range underwater LED lights and control systems.
“Shadow-Caster lighting and control options, fit well within our range and offers our decerning customers another excellent brand,” said Darren Bown, IMP MD.
“We know that the product will be a fantastic accessory for current and new boat owners as well as being of interest to many of our established OEM and refit customers.”
On the back of the distribution deal with Shadow-Caster is the SC3 3in LED round underwater marine light which can

MARKETING
With so much uncertainty around the economy and a gloomy economic forecast, businesses should take the time to reflect and question where they can streamline their budgets.
More often than not, marketing is looked at first and cuts made. However, and this may sound counterintuitive, now is the time to invest, as this is the point where your marketing spend can create the biggest impression on your potential customers and make an immediate difference in the competitor landscape.
If current customers are tightening their belts, you need to find new customers. The only way to do that is to ensure you are visible when they need you most. A buoyant (but recession sensitive) approach to marketing your brand is going to give your consumers’ confidence that you can deliver on your promises (although a word of warning, please don’t send out socks to keep their feet warm, especially if you are an energy company).
When competitors are slashing budgets, you have a big opportunity to ensure your marketing spend delivers the most impact allowing you to dominate in areas such as, Pay Per Click and Search Engine Optimisation, delivering an even stronger return on investment.
Recessions are temporary, so invest in the long-term health of your brand and don’t cut the marketing budget, especially if you want to come out leading the pack.
Fischer Panda UK has enhanced its green equipment line with the introduction of the new ePanda Series.

product line, opening up new opportunities for us to work with partners and customers.”
Comprising the ePanda Drive, the ePanda Power Unit and the ePanda Control Unit, the ePanda Series 8.0
will be the first product for the recreational marine market that includes the newly developed 5kW shaft drive.
The air-cooled drive, which forms a fixed unit with the inverter, is brushless,
sensorless and features permanent magnet technology making it a lowmaintenance, efficient drive, weighing 22kg.
DOMETIC FOCUSES ON ELECTRIFICATION
Dometic has unveiled a range of products at this year’s MESTRADE show focused on the electrification of the boating industry.
The company has showcased a new fully electric, advance controls steering system for inboardpowered watersports boats, a marine gateway IoT solution as well as a new power management system.
“It wasn’t that long ago that these types of vessel control capabilities would have seemed like science fiction,” said president of Marine Segment at Dometic, Eric Fetchko.
“Dometic will continue to lead the way for the industry, and this includes developing advanced steering and controls systems, digital switching, device integration technology, and telematics
solutions for use on the electric powered boats of the future,” he added.
Award-nominated steering system
Nominated for a DAME Design Award 2022, the Dometic Optimus electric steering system for inboardpowered watersports boats is said to give a smoother driving experience.
8 The Dometic Optimus Electric Actuator steering system
The Electric Actuator replaces the traditional cable or hydraulic steering systems used in a wide range of popular wake boats. With this system, the steering actuator is attached to the rudder via a rudder post, and
is commanded by the electronic steering helm, removing loads felt on the steering system and eliminating ‘bumpiness’.
Also from Optimus is a new upgrade to its 360 Joystick Control making it now compatible with twin OXE Diesel 300HP outboard engines.
Marine Gateway
Marking an entry into the Internet of Things marine market, Dometic’s new Marine Gateway solution lets boaters connect, monitor and control multiple devices and digital systems from anywhere in the world.
Through an intuitive app, boaters can monitor critical data such as battery status, tank levels, bilge pump status, shore power connection status and more, giving round-theclock peace of mind.

QUICK UNVEILS INTEGRATED STABILISATION SYSTEM
New Code Zero furler
Nautical equipment supplier Quick has taken the first steps on a novel path with the launch of a new stabilisation system at METSTRADE 2022
The MC² Seacentric System includes anti-roll fin stabiliser Viator, interceptor trim tab Intercepta and the well-known Quick Gyro antiroll gyroscopic stabiliser which hit the market in 2017.
All three are efficient products in stand-alone mode but, if installed together, can revolutionise the way of experiencing the sea, says the company.
“For the first time in the international marine scenario, a sole industry designs and produces gyro stabilisers, fins and interceptors which are extremely performing in stand-alone mode but even more performing if combined together on the same boat, optimising the different dynamic responses of the systems for a revolutionary stabilisation concept,” explained Michele Marzucco, chief executive at Quick.
Quick Gyro stabilises
the vessel’s roll, supported by the Viator fins, and by the Intercepta which stabilises the pitch. It is this integration that is said to lead to more effective stabilisation along with optimisation of the boat’s steering and fuel consumption.
Viator carbon fins are controlled by a unit that analyses and predicts the dynamics of the boat, in order to modify the stabilisation algorithms to adapt them to different situations. The fins are powered by compact and silent synchronous electric motors assembled without a shaft for minimising impact with debris or rocks.
With a design which has been optimised using a fluid dynamics simulation, the range comprises five models for boats from 50 to 145ft – VT700, VT900, VT1200, VT1700 and VT2000.
Intercepta is a ‘plug & play’ system which predicts the dynamics of the boat to coordinate the movement of the trim tab based on sea and navigation conditions. Powered by a 10-30V motor
and engineered with an integrated electric actuator, the range includes five
models suitable for boats from 20 to 130ft – IN30, IN45, IN60, IN75 and IN100.
Swedish mast and deck hardware manufacturer, Seldén Mast has expanded its range of electronically driven sail handling products with the launch of the CXe45.
Designed for yachts in the 45-55ft range, the CXe45 is a two-speed electric Code Zero furler controlled with the push of a button.
It can be integrated into a bow or bowsprit with a through-deck installation or, attached to a pad-eye, it can be used as an ondeck unit.
“The furling Code 0 was originally developed for long distance racing but is now a given addition to a cruising sailor’s headsail wardrobe,” explains MatsUno Fredrikson, Seldén’s director of marketing.
“Combine it with a furling jib and you have the ultimate set up from broad reaching to beating upwind, all without leaving the cockpit. Now, with the use of push button control instead of a furling line it becomes even easier and safer.”
The CXe45 runs on SEL-Bus and a Power Supply Unit converting 12V or 24V to 42V. SEL-Bus is a can-bus system with software that combines intelligence and power on board to sense and adapt loads for maximum efficiency and safety.

New stripper for metals
Propspeed, developer of underwater foul-release coatings, has launched a new solvent-based stripper to remove foul-release coatings from underwater metals.
Stripspeed has been developed to help Propspeed applicators prepare metal surfaces for reapplication. The product is non-flammable, noncaustic, DCM and NMP-free, and doesn’t create toxic dusts or debris.
There is no mixing required to create the thick consistency, which will hang on vertical and overhead surfaces.
Stripspeed can be used on any metal surface where Propspeed or other similar running gear coatings have been applied.
“Propspeed is designed to adhere to underwater metals and function season after season as the ultimate protection against fouling, corrosion and electrolysis,” said Chris Baird, CEO, Propspeed.
“In discussions with our network of applicators, we have found that the most time-consuming part of reapplying Propspeed is removing the old layer.
“To make it easier, faster and more cost-effective for our applicators, we formulated Stripspeed to easily remove Propspeed’s Etching Primer and topcoat all at once, eliminating the hassle, mess and toxic dust or debris that other methods produce.”
Stripspeed is used in three steps: surface preparation, application and removal.
The product is available in two sizes: five litre bottle and a litre bottle.

Mathilde added: “Highfield Boats has already proven to be a major player in the tender and RIB business despite the company’s young age of only 12 years.
“We have high ambitions for the European market and I look forward to putting my experience and enthusiasm to use.”
Millinder Alliance Marine Group
Tim Millinder has been appointed Group Purchasing Director for Alliance Marine Group.
The Marathon Leisure founder and MD will work with Group Marketing Director Matteo Belletti, with the aim of adding new brands and product ranges to AMG companies’ portfolio.
Tim and Matteo will also aim to extend geographical coverage to reflect the Group’s international strategy.
“It has been exactly one year since Marathon Leisure joined Alliance Marine Group,” said Tim. “One year is ample time to see that we are definitely on the same page, the same business model.
“Distribution is one of the mainstays of the Group, as it has been for myself for over 30 years with Marathon Leisure.”
Alliance Marine COO, Yann Bouctot, added: “Our Group has grown a lot over the last two years, combining organic and acquisitive growth.
“We also anticipate extra business development opportunities through closer sustainable relationships with current suppliers across the group, as well as with new partners wanting to reach their ideal audience for their brands.”
Iain Cook has joined Navimaps, UK and Ireland distributor for Navionics, as sales and business development manager.
Iain has more than 20 years’ experience of marine industry sales and management experience together with a lifelong passion for boating.
Iain’s addition will strengthen the Navimaps team following a period of growth. His role will encompass supporting Navimaps and Navionics into the future.
“It’s great to have Iain on board in this new role, his existing knowledge supporting electronics dealers and the electronics brands will give him a good head start and enable him to make a real difference from the outset,” said Navimaps MD, Lance Godefroy.

When Steve Bruce started his career in the marine industry, little did he know that he would end up being part of the solution towards sustainability.
“My very first job in the marine industry was for Seaquest Yachts around 2005. Peter Hook was my MD in a previous business and asked me to come and have a look at a new business he was thinking of buying.
“He ended up buying it and invited me to take on the sales.
“It was a baptism of fire selling IRC racer cruisers. It was great fun though. It meant moving to Hamble, playing with a lot of boats and doing a lot of racing.”
After a few years, Steve decided it time to move on and wanting to be his own boss, set up SBS Ltd, with the original idea to run a yacht brokerage.
Coming across the idea of a RIB that could be folded at a show in Russia, Steve jumped at the chance to develop the idea further, working with the designer to refine the concept.
“The RIB was being used as a rescue boat in Russia and I took the idea and developed it as a yacht tender.
“By this point, the brokerage arm of the business was taking a back seat and the RIB side was all encompassing.
“They could be used by any reasonably able-bodied person by themselves.”
And RIBS – which were manufactured in Russia - proved so popular that hundreds were manufactured each year.
“We were building around 400 boats a year until it all went horribly wrong.
“We’ve been trying to work out how to get production up and running again since the production

hiatus. It’s not commercially viable to manufacture the inflatable parts in the UK but at this point we’re hopeful of building the fibreglass parts in the UK and marrying them up with inflatable parts that would be manufactured in Poland.
“Not a week goes by when I don’t get an enquiry for one.”
It was on the back of the foldable RIBs that Steve then got into electric propulsion, initially supplying Torqeedo outboard motors.
“It was a logical package to put together.”
Then, when at the Palma Superyacht Show, Steve saw an ePropulsion Spirit on the stand.
“I’d never seen anything remotely like a Torqeedo, so I bought one and tested it. It was direct drive with no whining noise and had battery capacity.
“And it looked pleasing to the eye.”
After a period of selling both brands, Steve decided to focus on ePropulsion as the UK distributor and now sees himself as part of the solution working towards sustainability.
“ePropulsion UK was a separate business. ePropulsion Technology became a major shareholder in a great
business allowing them to take more control of their distribution network.
The move allows Steve and his team to concentrate on diverse projects including supplying motors
to a seaweed farm in Africa.
“We’ve been focusing on markets where there is demand; we can now start to look at the next market that could be commercially viable.”
Looking back, Steve says that the most challenging time for him was when boat sales dried up around 2013.
“I kept afloat by doing other work as well as boat sales for about a year. Cash flow was drying up and it was a good lesson that we shouldn’t put all our eggs in one basket.”
And another lesson Steve is keen to impart is the importance of tenacity and the desire to make things happen.
“I started life in the military where there is a saying that tenacity is greater than intelligence and I find myself trying to prove that.
“I’ve seen a lot of people come and go, especially as a yacht broker. A lot of people look at it and see it’s a wonderful career but it’s a business like any other business and you have got to find customers.
“The business has certainly evolved, if you’d asked me if I would be selling electric motors when I started out, I wouldn’t have believed it.”
And he says the marine industry is changing and companies need to change with it to keep up.
In the past, Steve points out, owning a leisure boat was something that Grandpa did; that happens less and less now.
“We need to appeal to a younger market. People are looking at the whole ownership concept.”
He concludes: “Change is inevitable. If nothing changes, you’re probably dying. There’s always room for improvement.”
