SCAVA News “An inspiring journey of creativity” René Scribante
From the Chair A warm embrace to each of you as we gather in the hues of creativity that have coloured the last five months. Our journey has been nothing short of inspiring, adorned with creativity, camaraderie, and shared passion for the arts. It is marked by the resounding success of our Visual Art competition and Exhibition, where the walls echoed with the stories our artworks told. Also a special highlight was the insightful talk by the President and Vice President of SANAVA at the George museum, adding depth to our artistic exploration, with the opening of the “Object” Exhib ition. Heartfelt thanks to every member whose contributions have woven a rich tapestry of artistry throughout the year. Your passion fuels the vibrant spirit of our association. To all members who are taking part in the ongoing “ Boundless Realm of Creativity” Exhibition during the holiday season, thank you. Wishing everyone the very best. A profound acknowledgment goes to our devoted committee, whose hard work and dedication over the past five months have been the guiding force behind our artistic voyage. As we stand at this juncture, on the threshold of a new year, let's carry forward the energy and enthusiasm, ready to fill the canvas of the future with more shared experiences, artistic expressions, and the joy of creating together. Wishing all our members and their loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year!

SCAVA’s “Visual Expressions” Competition & Exhibition As we opened the doors to this competition & exhibition, our hearts were filled with the passion and inspiration that emanated from each artwork. We celebrated a memorable evening of creativity, and the indomitable human spirit that drives us to create, innovate, and connect through art. A sincere gratitude to our esteemed panel of judges, Derric van Rensburg, Brendan Cole and Hermann Niebuhr, who undertook the challenging task of evaluating the artworks and our incredible curator Ian Tainton, whose meticulous efforts had beautifully woven together this exhibition. We had 66 incredibly talented artists contributing a total of 200 artworks. We delved into the talent, creativity, and passion that defines the heart and soul of the artists that participated in SCAVA’s “Visual Expressions” Competition Exhibition at the Sayers Auditorium of the George Museum.

Discover the mesmerizing fusion of art and poetry.
Visual Expressions and Poetry The magic continued with the collaboration of Visual Arts & Poetry as the poems that have been recited by their creators, Saturday 9th September, had found their place on our gallery walls of SCAVA’s “Visual Expressions” Competition Exhibition, right next to the paintings that inspired them. This was an unique experience that was organised by René Bohnen from SCAVA, where art and words united as we explored the art, read the enchanting poems, and let your imagination be soared. We found ourselves immersed in a world of artistry with stunning paintings on display, discovering the magic of poetry about some of the artworks and had a chance to connect with art on a deeper level.

SCAVA members showcased their creations.
MUSE Festival The Muse Festival opened an exciting new opportunity for SCAVA members to showcase their creations in the beautiful gardens of the historical Westbank Manor house in Greatbrak. Fourteen members took part in the outdoor exhibition - Gert Bezuidenhout, Petra Brits, Kala Combrink, Petro Farr, Werner Grebe, Joanne Hammil, Tersia Hoffmann, Maryna Human, Marcelle Joubert, Lynda Murison, Eugené Potgieter, Mervin Remas, Ninette Steyl and Dianne White (all the way from Still Bay). We were blessed with fair weather on the Friday, leading to some successful sales, and artists had a chance to get to know each other a little better. We gained a new SCAVA member, the talented sculptor Freek Steenberg from Uniondale. Due to anticipated bad weather, the decision was made to forgo Saturday’s exhibition. This annual 3-day festival celebrates a fusion of performing and visual art, food, and music. The visual arts on display included land art, sculpture, glass art, ceramics, paintings, and textiles. We hope to make this a regular feature on the SCAVA calendar. For more information visit their website www.musefees.co.za/ or follow them on Facebook @musefees.

SCAVA present Art Workshop Opportunities!
Derric van Rensburg Workshop – 2nd & 3rd September 2023 A few of our SCAVA members had the privilege of participating in a paid workshop presented by Derric Van Rensburg, who was one of our judges at our annual Visual Expressions competition. Derric is a renowned South African Artist with well-known international presence. The morning after our exhibition opening started off with an acrylic painting workshop held at ‘die Benz’ in Market Street George. This venue allowed for 17 participants with ample painting space. What a treat the event was. Derric was encouraging with his attention to every artist participating, while introducing us to elements of his personal technique. We had so much fun creating our interpretations of landscapes that he handed out to us, each of us creating between 5 – 6 pieces of work over the course of the two days. We had lunches catered for us as well as a tea and coffee station intermittently furnished with delicious biscuits as well as cake. A big thank you to Derric for affording us the opportunity to learn from him.

“Expand your worldview through playful mark-making”.
Hein Botha Workshop – Saturday, 7th October 2023 One of our very own SCAVA members, and locally renowned artists, Hein Botha, presented a free workshop at the George museum on Saturday 7 October 2023. The workshop was titled ‘Expand your worldview through playful mark-making”. The morning was started off with each of us being handed a folded square sheet of paper, charcoal for drawing, as well as pens and pencils to use for mark making. We each received a stone for inspiration, from which we could appreciate different shapes and forms. We were encouraged to free up our minds and unleash our hands while setting our imaginations free. The entire morning afforded us the opportunity to challenge our restricting perspectives of Art and we were afforded an opportunity to look at art from a fresh, alternative perspective. What a marvellous opportunity this was to refresh our thinking and experiment with a new approach to creating.

Educational project of the CAP Institute for Contemporary Art Practice
Object Workshop & Exhibition Curator: Elfriede Dreyer A number of artists are participating in an art exhibition titled “Object”, that was opened on 28 October at the George Museum by Dr Samuel Isaacs, president of SANAVA and the vice-president of SANAVA, Prof Elfriede Dreyer. The Object exhibition forms part of an educational project of the CAP Institute for Contemporary Art Practice, presented by Prof. Elfriede Dreyer, who is affiliated with Unisa as an Extraordinary Professor. She has been productive in the art industry for more than 30 years, both nationally and internationally. The workshop was organised through the South Cape Association of Visual Arts (SCAVA) and South Africa National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA). The works on exhibition were produced during a this workshop that took place over four days and included assessment of the artists' work; the identification and selection of content for artmaking; and the practical execution of ideas. The participating artists are Alison Lombard and Cathy Rogers from Cape Town; Maryna Joubert from Jeffreys Bay; Elsa van der Klashorst and Gwenneth Miller from Pretoria; and Anthea-Ann Jennings, Denise Woodgate, Donne Rundle, Kala Combrink, Mary-Jane Morris, Michelle Henn, René Scribante, Rosa Snyman-Wessels, Sue Duthie, Tersia Hoffmann, Vandana Premchand and Zanne Small from the Garden Route. The theme of Object is concerned with the projection of meaning on the things/objects that surround us, including material culture and objects in nature. The choices of objects regarded interpretations of a doll, jewellery, an old floor brush, a skull, a burnt protea, light, green shoes, maps, trees, a chair, a mirror, a tortoise, a teacup, a statue and sticks. The artists worked with ideas to do with memory, history, culture, nature, psychoanalysis, Romanticism, alchemy, the Anthropocene and identity. They considered different styles and media, and pushed to move their work to a more conceptual level. The ”Object” Exhibition will run until 24 January 2023 in the George Museum. Special AGM
SCAVA Special General Meeting The SCAVA Committee gave notice of a Special General Meeting to adopt a Revised SCAVA constitution, the meeting to be held: Friday 24 November 2023 at 18:00 at the George Museum, before the Year-End Function. As matters stand SCAVA’s current constitution is a short document that is very lacking in body and stature which you can view on our website. The committee has set up a more complete constitution to better outline motives and ways of functioning of the organisation, and what we require from the members, is to give their 'yes' to the constitution we have now put together. Please contact Liezel du Toit with any questions at secretary@scava.co.za

Inspirational Quote Vincent van Gogh “ I believe in the absolute necessity of a new art of colour, of drawing and – of the artistic life. And if we work in that faith, it seems to me that there’s a chance that our hopes won’t be in vain.”
