As a child, Mercedes would spend afternoons at her uncle’s studio reading floor plans, drawing, or helping build models. Growing up in Buenos Aires, Argentina and surrounded by magnificent Beaux Art Architecture sparked on her an appreciation for architecture, design, and urban planning For over a decade Mercedes worked and lived around the world. Working closely with people from different cultures and seeing other design aesthetics influenced her design principals and creativity today. Mercedes had the opportunity to work alongside seasoned professionals in the areas of Interior Design, Architecture, and Landscape. The work experience in the field gave her an introduction to a large scope of design work that nourishes on her a love for interior design. Mercedes decided to take to the next level her drive and expertise for design enrolling at The Academy of Art University in San Francisco for professional instruction, where she earned her BFA in Interior Design. Her training at the Academy had ensured a life-long passion for design and architecture. Mercedes’s designs principal are based on creating interiors that compliment the activities and functions that will occur within the interior space and harmoniously honors and enhance the building’s architecture. Her outlook is formed by a respect for historical architecture combined with an appreciation of contemporary design and functionality.

MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT
site analysis
Demographics 34 6th Street, San Francisco CA
The building is located on 6th street in the Soma neighborhood of San Francisco blocks away from the Tenderloin and Civic Center area. Most buildings in the area are single-room occupancy hotels, low-income housing and shelters. For the last few years the neiborhood has been going through a face of gentrification. Big tech companies like Twitter, Zendesk and Uber open their headquarters blocks away and new housing for middle and high middle-class is being built. Nonetheless, here is a larger concentration of people with mental illness, addictions, drug and abusive problems, homeless, and low-income families. Illicit activities like drug dealing or prostitution are visible at any time of the day at the same time kids walk to school or people go to work.

GATEWAYS symbolize the scene of passing from one state to another, from one place to another, from the known to the new to know.
Mission Bay, originally a port area, was the gateway to San Francisco. Today Primo’s Hospitality Group Market is the new gate for Mission bay residents to a place where they can experience all the pleasures that food can offe, a place to share with friends and family, learn and explore new flavors and experiences.
Custoner’s coming into the market will experience in every space something new something unexpeccted, something from the known to the new to know.

ABOUT THE PROJECT Minimalist Chroma is the combination of clean
lines and the monochromatic palettes of greys and blues warmed up with brass tones.
The owner was looking for a place where with no
items on display beside her collection of potteries from around the world. A place less crowded, one in which architecture and form were appreciated.

Thank You!
This book is a celebration to friendship, years of work, and dreams; and my gratitude knows no bounds. I would like to dedicate this portfolio to my family who have always believed in me; to the Iglesias family for their unconditional support; to my instructors at the Academy of Art University for sharing their knowledge and guide me through the design journey; and to my AAU ninjas for their friendship, hours of laughs, and for being a very important piece of my college experience. To my nieces, Victoria, Guadalupe, and Emma, I hope this book inspires you to follow your dreams, I love you girls!
