› from the editor “Innovative” and “attractive” were the buzzwords when Mercedes-Benz unveiled the SLK 20 years ago at the Turin Motor Show. The premiere of this compact, twoseater sports car caused a sensation. For the first time, Mercedes was offering a small roadster positioned below the SL. At the same time, the vehicle set new standards in pioneering engineering and technology. The folding sheet-metal roof drew particular attention from specialists and the general public alike. This Vario roof combined the advantages of a robust hard top with the flexibility of a classic fabric top. The innovative solution was one of the strengths which saw the SLK pave the way for an entire market segment focusing on open-top driving all year round with a sporty touch. Mercedes had already provided a foretaste of the roadster two years previously, with an SLK study. Designers Bruno Sacco and Peter Pfeiffer were presented with an award for their visionary design. A more advanced SLK study featuring the Vario roof duly followed at the Paris Motor Show in October 1994. The SLK appealed with great success to a new, lifestyleoriented category of customers. Sales of the across the three generations of SLK total more than 670,000, with the R170 which was built between 1996 and 2004 accounting for over 311,000 units alone. Following the introduction of a new nomenclature, the R172 has now been redesignated the SLC, underscoring the roadster’s closeness to the Mercedes C-Class in terms of engineering.

Low mileage Evo An incredible 1990 Mercedes 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II, with just 885 miles on the clock appeared at Silverstone Auctions’ Salon Privé sale at Blenheim. This particular car, number 452 of 502 cars made by Mercedes, was supplied new to the UK by Lancaster in 1990, one of only four cars officially sold new in the UK. Testament to its originality and low mileage, amazingly the dealer sticker still resides on the back window in pristine condition. The car was purchased by a collector and stored at the supplying main dealer for approximately 10 years, covering virtually no road miles in this time.
Nick’s G-Class escapade Nick Grimshaw narrowly avoided injury following a car accident close to his North London home. The 32-year old BBC Radio DJ upended his £80,000 Mercedes G-Class after swerving to avoid a cat. Pictures taken at the scene show the vehicle on its side in the middle of a residential street in Stoke Newington. A representative for Nick said : ‘Nick is absolutely fine - he was driving at no more than 15 mph and he swerved to avoid a cat’. The cat escaped injury also.

Octopussy revisited MBO member Steve Barratt’s classic 6.3 SEL was used for filming on the BBC One Show with Gyles Brandreth. The filming was about the stunts used in the original 1983 James Bond Octopussy film with Roger Moore. Gyles Brandreth dressed up in the same style of costume used by Roger Moore, and even wore a wig. The original train scenes in Octopussy were filmed on the Nene Valley railway all those years ago. They even used the same carriages. It’s a great place to film being not too far from London and is quite unique as it has a wider platform to suit wider European trains and coaches which they have there.

All through the night The start of this year’s Spa 24-hour race caused mixed emotions for Mercedes-AMG. Their GT3 cars set the six fastest times but a stewards’ decision led to five minutes of the race and the first six positions on the starting grid being lost. Undaunted by this, the teams immediately set in place a different strategy that led to impressive progress. Their decision to come into the pits for the stop and go penalties at an early stage paid off: shortly after serving the penalty, the field was slowed down by a yellow flag situation, which kept the loss of time limited.

Collector Bill Evans commissioned the reconstruction of a ‘Blitzen Benz’, or ‘Lightning Benz’. The car was originally developed under the aegis of Victor Héméry, a successful French racing driver who had been under contract to Benz & Cie. in Mannheim since 1907.

displacement of 21.5 litres, a top speed of 125mph and a streamlined body - all this as far back as 1909: the Lightning Benz, known internally as the Benz 200 hp, is one of the most fascinating creations to emanate from the early days of Mercedes-Benz. Carl Benz himself was in fact against the project. He was of the opinion that motor racing did not add anything of value to the production of regular cars. Julius Ganss, a board member at Benz & Cie., had very different ideas. He felt that there was one thing above all to be gained from
the proposed record-breaking car: publicity. For it would be faster than any other roadgoing or airborne vehicle of its time, including motorboats and trains. The technical basis was provided by the Benz 150 hp racing car of 1908. There was just one objective: a maximum speed of more than 200 km/h. By widening the bore to 185 mm, the displacement of the four-cylinder racing engine was increased from 15.1 to a monumental 21.5 litres. This is a figure that remains a record to this day: No racing or record-attempt car from
Mercedes has ever had a larger displacement. The engine developed an output of up to 147 kW (200 hp) at 1600 rpm. The huge four-cylinder in-line unit weighed 407 kilograms; the entire vehicle 1450 kilograms. An intermediate shaft and chain drive transferred this tremendous power to the rear axle via a four-speed transmission. For its first outings of 1909, the engine was still set within the body of the Benz Grand Prix car of 1908. The new 200 hp car made its first appearance on 17 October 1909 in a sprint race in Brussels, which it promptly won. The declared

aim, however, was to exceed the 200 kmh mark. To this end, it was Victor Héméry who took the wheel on 8 November 1909, on the high-speed Brooklands circuit in England. To the infernal thunder of the four-cylinder engine, he achieved a speed of 202.648 km/h over a kilometre. The halfmile was covered at a fulminating 205.666 km/h, in both cases with a flying start. The magical barrier of 200 km/h for a car with an internal combustion engine had been breached. Next in line was the conquest of America, for in 1906 a certain Fred Marriott had managed 205 km/h on Daytona Beach, driving a steam-powered Stanley Steamer. In January 1910 the recordbreaking Benz was sent across the Big Pond. Its destination was New York, where Benz importer Jesse Froehlich operated his business. Its arrival soon became known to event impresario Ernie Moross Wind, and he negotiated a deal: he handed his 150 hp Grand Prix car over to Froehlich, counted out a further 6000 dollars onto the table and received the record-breaking Benz in exchange. And because the name really does say it all in this case, he began by christening the car the ‘Lightning Benz’. The German name ‘Blitzen-Benz’, which sounded even more combative to American ears, was not used until a little later. An imperial eagle was also painted onto the bonnet. But it was as yet without this embellishment that the Benz appeared on Daytona Beach for its recordbreaking attempt on 16/17 March. The driver this

time was the daredevil Barney Oldfield, who set a new record of 211.4 km/h. The record was not recognized, however, because the attempt did not comply with the regulations valid at the time. It was not until 1911 that Moross was able to try his luck again, albeit this time with the former Buick works driver Bob Burman behind the wheel of the Blitzen-Benz. On 23 April Burman raced across the sands of Daytona
The German name ‘Blitzen-Benz’, which sounded even more combative to American ears, was not used until a little later. An imperial eagle was also painted onto the bonnet. Beach to achieve an average speed of 228.1 km/h over a flying mile, with 226.7 km/h for the flying kilometre. This was a new land speed record that was to remain unbroken until 1919. Following this, the famous car toured America as a show attraction. In 1913 the legendary record-breaking car was retired from service. Its history can continue to be traced up to 1923, when it was disassembled and its parts were used for another racing car project.
A total of six Benz 200 hp cars were built, some of them with the Blitzen-Benz body and some with different bodywork. Three of them remain: number 6 with an extended chassis and touring coachwork is owned by an American collector. The example in the Mercedes-Benz Museum was reconstructed in 1935 from parts then still in existence, and was restored in 2004. And then there is the car owned by Bill Evans, a Californian hotel magnate and automobile collector. Without any regard for expense, he decided to commission the reconstruction of a further Blitzen Benz. For this project, the Mercedes-Benz Museum made its own car available to him as a model. Evans was also able to use the parts from the Benz 200 hp with the serial number 3, once known as ‘Lean Joseph’, that were still in the possession of Mercedes-Benz Classic, for example the original engine with the number 9141. Then his enthusiasm takes hold: “The enormous torque is what pushes your body back into the seat. At low rpms your eyeballs actually shake inside your sockets when you drive, because the car vibrates so much.” “Everybody knows what the ‘Blitzen-Benz’ is, but nobody’s ever really seen it. So that’s why I wanted to bring it back to life” is the way Bill Evans explains his motivation. “Even as a kid, I was fascinated by this car. Its reconstruction represents a lifelong dream come true,” the collector continues.

S-CLASS With the 450 SEL 6.9 in Germany
B
ehind the hill rises Hohenzollern Castle. In the valley below are the villages of Hechingen and Bisingen, which, in the dramatic morning light, look a little like hamlets from the Middle Ages. It is truly fairytale scenery. The idea is a tour through the countryside and towns of Germany’s poets and thinkers in a car that, at the time it was created, represented radical progress. A car which inspires longing for a time gone by that was, if not better, surely less complex. The metallic blue 450 SEL 6.9 stands on a hill, powerful in presence, classic in appearance. The most statuesque version of the 116 series measures more than five metres in length. Launched in 1972, it was the first Mercedes to bear the S-Class designation.
The door closes with a rich thunk. This top model of the S-Class range already comes with air conditioning, as well as an amazing level control that can be used to raise or lower the entire car. The proverbial luxury-class-feeling is augmented by velour-upholstered seats, dials in varnished cherry wood, and a headliner made from light, perforated leather. The smell inside has notes of fuel, and sparks associations with a well-kept ship’s cabin. The engine springs to life without hesitation. Eight cylinders with a displacement 6.9 litres; it is a cathedral of steel under the bonnet, able to deliver virtually any power requirement on demand. To put it in figures – 550 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm. “The air is cool and it darkens ... and
calmly flows the Rhine; the mountain peaks are sparkling ... in the sunny evening shine”, goes the ‘The Lorelei’, one of the best known poems from German Romanticism. It is almost impossible to escape the magic of the rocks on which the maiden is supposed to have combed her golden hair, while distracting boatmen from the dangerous current with her song, here at the narrowest and deepest part of the Rhine. The romanticism of a trip through Germany in a classic S-Class is a journey back in time. A winding road in Germany’s heartland. A little heavier on the pedal, the 6.9 lifts off and presses the driver gently into the soft seat. The set-up, however, is extremely grippy. The road cruiser carves its way smoothly through the tight bends, accelerating effortlessly out of the corners. The

three speed automatic transmission attained top marks at the time, and still fits well to the powerful engine. Presently, the engine sharpens its tone with a burst of speed on the short straight. But even then, the unflustered feeling of gliding calmly through space remains undisturbed. When you maintain a constant horizontal level when driving through bends of various radii, it becomes clear just how radically advanced this classic actually was for its time. And then we have almost reached Dessau, the penultimate point of the journey. It is a place that fits very well with the spirit of the creator of accomplished cars: the historic Bauhaus, where art and craft once came together. “The ultimate goal of all visual artistic activity is construction,” wrote Walter Gropius in his manifesto. A similar spirit that must also have
driven the makers of the S-Class in the 70s. The journey through time is speeding up. This is where you really have the chance to drive - on the autobahn. The V8 has dry-sump lubrication,
like a race car, and propels the saloon car so fast that it took until 1977 to dare send it to the USA, which was not exactly speed-friendly at the time.
Later, the S-Class was voted the world’s best car more than once on the international stage. We reach the bridge across the Werratal, where the landscape transforms into a moorland of hills and valleys. Franconia’s deciduous woodlands give way gradually to the coniferous forests of the east. An almost forgotten and yet incredibly modern car feeling accompanies us via Dessau to Berlin, to the capital city, where you can let the recent past roll by in the slow flow of city traffic. Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenburg Gate - the SEL 450 6.9 glides along quieter than a maglev train. We pass the university founded by Wilhelm von Humboldt, whose brother Alexander, the naturalist and world explorer was driven by a visionary spirit. A spirit that has influenced the feel of this journey at least as much as the romantic glimpse in the rear view mirror.
MEXICO’S GREAT ROAD RACE A hundred classic cars on a blinder over seven days, and 2000 miles of public roads that’s what they do every year in Mexico, on La Carrera Panamericana.
F
rom palms to prairies, it’s a flat-out blast, a world-class endurance event with a fearsome, car-killer reputation. As the Panamericana retinue heads north, on special stages and transit sections, it gathers a momentum all its own, and every night is party night in the cities along the way. The original Carrera lasted just five years, from 1950 to 1954, when it was banned by an unsympathetic political regime, ostensibly because of fatalities. In 1953 and 1954, La Carrera was a round of the World Sports Car Championship, alongside Le Mans and the Targa Florio. While established events like these were staged on closed-off public roads in the days before purpose-built race tracks, the Panamericana was in the tradition of the great inter-city races, staged when the car was in its infancy. Paris to Vienna (1902), though, and Paris to Madrid (1903), at less than 800 miles each, could not compare with the length of La Carrera, at over 2000 miles, and even the Mille Miglia was only half the distance. This was a trek of daunting proportions to European drivers accustomed to a few hundred miles at best, but less awesome for South and North Americans used to a transcontinental scale. Formula 1’s top names, from Ascari and
Behra, to Fangio and De Portago, raced works sports cars against American stock cars, for personal glory and manufacturers’ kudos. Porsche still uses the word Carrera (meaning ‘race’) for its sporting derivatives, after its class win in 1953. The Mercedes-Benz factory team was victorious in 1952. The modem event is run like a rally with closedoff stages, but otherwise the formula is similar. There’s a driver and a co-driver, and even the look of the cars hasn’t changed much, since most are ‘50s and ‘60s models. The organizers however, are using the newly-instituted unlimited class as the springboard for an event for modem cars. Mexico is and ever was a paradoxical place. Rich, sophisticated city dwellers as much at home in Paris and New York live alongside shanty town poor, while a rural population is made up of prosperous farmers and penniless peons, with all the variations in between. While most Mexican cities boast a wealth of fine, Spanish colonial buildings, centred on colonnaded piazzas, the suburbs are made up of cheek-by-jowl shacks, with food shops, stalls, hawkers and light industry spilling out onto the pavement - usually unpaved. Evidence of preconquest Indian buildings is all around, provided you know where to look - like Chicomoztoc, 35
miles south-east of Zacatecas, consisting of free-standing columns and ziggurats built by Aztecs around 1170AD. Further south below Oaxaca are much older Mayan monuments. Apart from the first race in 1950 which ran north to south, the Carrera has always gone from south to north, though nowadays instead of finishing at Cuidad Juarez it veers north east at Leon, towards Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo. In some ways, things remain much the same. There may be broad, sweeping freeways and toll roads through many parts of Mexico now, but the country roads haven’t altered radically; they still have white bollards down the sides and the edges are graded into the gutter. There are guard rails on most of the mountain passes, with yellow arrows showing which way the bend goes, but that doesn’t make them much less daunting and, on the notorious Mil Cumbres (a thousand peaks) near Morelia, there aren’t any barriers at all. My curiosity was aroused when I saw a couple of Mobil Oil videos of the 1953 and 1954 races, huge stock cars, barrelling across dusty plains, crowds thronging the route. I bided my time until 2006, when, at last, I was on my way to Mexico. La Carrera Panamerican ‘The World’s Greatest Road Race’ by Johnny Tipler is published by Veloce @ £45.

ront-mid-engine concept with transaxle, twin-turbo V-8 engine rated at 430 kW/585 hp, extensively modified suspension, new aerodynamics and intelligent lightweight construction add up to a highly dynamic driving experience. Even from afar, the exclusive ‘AMG green hell magno’ paintwork hints at the sports car’s origin - most of its development time was spent in the ‘Green Hell’ of the Nürburgring racetrack. The new front fascia with active elements, large rear aerofoil and rear fascia with double diffuser enhance aerodynamic efficiency and grip. use firmly in mind. Figures such as 3.6 seconds from zero to 62mph and a top speed just shy of 200 mph combined with outstanding driving dynamics, translate into hot laps on the racetrack. Sharpened racetrack performance comes courtesy of lightweight construction incorporating aluminium and carbon, reinforcements in the body shell, uprated twinturbo V-8 engine, and a suspension with active rear-wheel steering and uniball joints. The engine’s position in conjunction with the vehicle’s low centre of gravity translates into agile handling and high cornering speeds. Engineers and designers worked intensively during development. All elements contribute to the enhanced driving dynamics. A special
engineering feat is the completely new active aerodynamics profile, which is concealed almost invisibly in the underbody in front of the engine. At speed in RACE mode, this carbon component automatically moves downward by about 40 millimetres and changes the airflow considerably. This process results in what is known as the Ventura effect, which additionally ‘sucks’ the car onto the road and reduces front-axle lift. The driver can feel this in the steering: the AMG GT R is precise to steer when cornering at high speed and exhibits great directional stability. In addition, the drag coefficient is improved. All of the aerodynamic measures combined increase the surface contact at top speed by 155 kilograms compared with the AMG GT.

Amazingly, despite higher engine output, extra width, chunkier tyres, larger rear aerofoil, raised cooling-air demand and increased downforce, the AMG GT R has a lower drag coefficient (Cd) than the AMG GT. The new coil-over suspension was designed specifically. As in professional motorsport, drivers can select their personal set-up and infinitely adjust the spring pre-load manually. This makes it possible to influence the dive and roll behaviour as well as the grip precisely. The coil-over suspension is combined with the AMG RIDE CONTROL continuously variable, adaptive damping system. The system is electronically controlled and automatically adapts the damping on each wheel to the current handling situation, speed and road conditions. Furthermore, the driver can adjust the adaptive damping characteristics at the touch of a button in the AMG DRIVE UNIT or by using the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes. Three modes are available: ‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport Plus’. The new supercar is even more sensitive to steering inputs thanks to standard-fit active rearwheel steering, which is being used for the first
time on a Mercedes-AMG model. The system offers an ideal combination of agility and stability handling characteristics that are normally in direct conflict. The active rear-wheel steering not only improves cornering, it also assists the driver in the event of sudden evasive manoeuvres and thus enhances safety, This makes the AMG GT R easier to control on the limit. The standard 3-stage ESP® with the settings ‘ESP ON’, ‘ESP SPORT Handling Mode’ and ‘ESP OFF’ works in unison with the limited-slip differential. In ESP OFF mode, another innovation allows the driver to exert more influence on the handling characteristics. The new AMG TRACTION CONTROL system also comes directly from motorsport. It allows drivers to pre select the slip on the driven rear axle in nine levels. Just like in the current AMG GT3, it isolates the grip on the driven wheels and does not affect the stabilisation provided by the ESP®. Control is via a special rotary switch located in the centre console below the ventilation outlets. Depending on the setting, the system permits more or less slip on the rear wheels very helpful in varying road conditions.

A mix of materials is used for the structure of the AMG GT R: various aluminium alloys for the chassis and body, steel for the boot lid and magnesium for the front deck. A host of further measures contributes to the weight reduction as part of a lightweight-performance strategy. The use of carbon fibre, the lightweight and high-strength material from motorsport, helps to achieve the ambitious goals. Carbon fibre is the material of choice for, among other things, the front wings, the roof and the torque tube between engine and transmission. Overall the new AMG GT R is 15 kilograms lighter than the AMG GT S, despite incorporating far more technical features. The AMG 4.0-litre V-8 engine features twin turbochargers, which are not mounted on the outside of the cylinder banks but rather inside the V configuration – experts call it a “hot inside V”. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission configured in a transaxle layout at the rear axle has likewise been extensively revised by the developers to make the transmission more suitable for the racetrack. Drivers can tailor the AMG GT R to their personal preferences using the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT controller.

ROAD TRIP NORTH Through Europe with the new Mercedes GLE and GLE Coupé.
A
fter the usual queue at Heathrow, I show my passport at the customs gate. “Where are you going sir?” the police officer asks. “I’m going to Cape North in Norway by crossing eight countries in less than ten days”, I reply. The officer doesn’t answer, just hands my passport back with a big smile. And I’m on my way: together with 20 international bloggers for a great road trip organized by Mercedes, driving in their new SUVs, the GLE and GLE Coupé, from Kitzbühel in Austria to Cape North in Norway. Initially I didn’t expect such off-road capabilities on our organized journey from a car that looks so elegant at first glance. Although the GLE has plenty to offer. Thanks to its AIR BODY CONTROL with adaptive damping and the allround level control incorporated in the system
and Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR), we can basically take any exit, road or what looks like a road without any concerns about damaging the car, or worse, getting stuck. However, I enjoyed the ride in the GLE 350 d 4MATIC the most. For me, this SUV combines maximum efficiency and agility and boasts a discreet elegance on the road. The GLE Coupé, meanwhile, is my second favourite, and we take it to the next stop: Leipzig. The industrial area is absolutely beautiful there; recently it has been converted into artist studios, restaurants and even an open-air cinema. In Poland, the next stop, it is the architecture which fascinates me once again. Restaurants are not just simple buildings, they’re castles, pyramids or day clubs with waitresses wearing
costumes. Having dinner at our destination in Poznan is a fantastic reward during our trip. In Riga the faces suddenly change and fewer people understand English. Additionally, we can no longer pay for petrol with euros. On this part of the journey I enjoy some time by myself, then after driving for an hour in sand, mud, rocks and between lots of trees I arrive at a deserted beach. Initially I’m not entirely sure if I can make it down to the water with the GLE Coupé. But I’m deeply thankful to the engineers for including the all-round level control incorporated in the system that gives the car an additional 50 mm of ground clearance. Next stop: Finland. After a while we are leaving the ferry which brought us safely from Tallinn to Finland. Crossing Finland is quite a

visual experience with hundreds of lakes just waiting for you to jump in. The drive is very smooth and we mainly use the DISTRONIC PLUS feature of the GLE to automatically keep a safe distance from the car in front of us at our desired speed. My other favourite feature is the DISTRONIC PLUS steering assist system which corrects your direction of travel when you drift out of lane. These many small hardworking aides help to maintain your concentration level and make the long days of driving less painful.

I’m surprised to see that hot dogs are a Finnish delicacy on the road. And they are good! Most of the team love stopping at petrol stations to try them with hundreds of different topping combinations. Everyone is so incredibly smiley and kind to us that we decide to fill up the car again when the tank is still half-full just to get another dose of happiness. We spend one night in Alta where we witness one last time the unique golden sky of Norway. In the early morning mist we head off once more to our final destination: Cape North.
This 3-hour stretch is one of the most beautiful rides of my life. Every minute is a feast for the eyes. We reach Cape North under a heavy fog that turns our arrival into a lunar experience. Touching the tip of the world never felt so real. More than 5,000 km and 65 hours of consecutive driving make this moment even more intense. Like an eternal souvenir, I will always remember my trip in the MercedesBenz GLE – a vehicle which, despite my best efforts to get it dirty, ultimately far outclassed my dynamic off-road skills with its elegance.

RHYS’190 E 2.6 AMG Back in 1994 when my dad used to work at a bank in Coventry, he and a colleague remember seeing an almost brand new Mercedes 190 E AMG, a factory order second-generation AMG-kitted 2.6 190 E in Blau Schwartz colour.

ears later I spotted an almost identical car in the city, and it turned out that the owner lived quite close to our house. Regularly spotting the car filling up at fuel stations etc., I began to think about what it would be like to own and drive such a beautiful car. So imagine my surprise and delight when it popped up on an internet website advertised for sale. I thought it was fate and was convinced the car was going to be mine. What I didn’t know from seeing it driving around town though, was that the car was a low-miler, with just over 80,000 miles on the clock. Also that the body kit it flaunted was an original Gen-2 AMG. It sat on a set of genuine pre-merger AMG Aero-1 alloy wheels, including the spare, which was residing in the boot shod in an original Pirelli P6000 tyre. When I showed the car to my father and his friend, the first thing they did was to regale me with their memories of the lovely AMG 190 E in the same colour and spec that used to sit outside their work, owned by the manager of the time. Well, it would have to have been, as the price list for the AMG goodies isn’t for the faint hearted. A little more digging and it transpires that this could in fact be that very same car, as at least three of its previous owners hailed from Coventry.
At the time that the car was manufactured, AMG offered the service of fitting styling packages (body kits, wheels etc.) directly from factory, the cars being shipped to AMG to have the work done. And the AMG stamps in the kit, seem to fit the time frame etc. to make it likely that this is one of those factory fitted AMG kitted 190Es. Currently, prices and availability of good examples of these 2.6 straight six variants are fast following the trends set by the Cosworth 16v 190s – that is upwards! So if you want to own one, now is probably the time, before all the good ones snapped up. My example is currently undergoing an extensive mechanical service; engine, suspension, brakes, steering and gearbox are all receiving attention as well as the installation of a complete Oxblood Red full leather interior. Also being fitted is a Sportline gear shift, Italviolanti steering wheel, In xar phone and sundry other goodies, which should sit nicely alongside the original Blaupunkt stereo and speakers. This car is jointly owned by my father and me.
