Mercer University is one of America’s oldest and most distinctive institutions of higher learning, offering rigorous programs that span the undergraduate liberal arts to doctoral-level degrees. Founded by early 19th century Baptists, Mercer — while no longer formally affiliated with the Baptist denomination — remains committed to an educational environment that embraces the historic Baptist principles of intellectual and religious freedom, while affirming values that arise from a Judeo-Christian understanding of the world. Campuses • Macon — Home to the College of Liberal Arts, School of Medicine, School of Engineering, Stetson School of Business and Economics, Tift College of Education and Townsend School of Music, along with programs for working adults through the College of Continuing and Professional Studies. The Walter F. George School of Law is located one mile away on Coleman Hill overlooking downtown. Macon is a city of 90,000 residents that serves as the educational, medical, cultural and commercial hub of Central Georgia.

College of Liberal Arts (Macon) The oldest of the University’s academic units, the College of Liberal Arts remains the cornerstone of Mercer’s academic programs. The College offers an array of baccalaureate programs in the humanities, fine arts, sciences and social sciences. It places emphases on teaching, individual instruction, and study solidly grounded in the liberal arts and maintains high academic standards, rigor, and a regard for the development of the character of the students. A popular offering of the College is the Great Books Program, which provides students a unique opportunity to study the classic writers and thinkers of the Western world. Walter F. George School of Law (Macon) Founded in 1873, the Mercer University Walter F. George School of Law is one of the oldest law schools in the United States and the first one in the state of Georgia accredited by the American Bar Association. Mercer Law School’s educational philosophy is based on a broadly shared commitment to prepare students for the high-quality, general practice of law in a day-to-day learning environment that is both strongly supportive and consistently professional. Its innovative Woodruff Curriculum – which focuses on ethics and 4

practical skills amid small class sizes – earned the Gambrell Professionalism Award from the ABA for its “depth of excellence.” With an enrollment of about 420 students, taught by some of the sharpest legal minds in the country, Mercer Law School has been listed among the nation’s top law schools and is nationally recognized for its exceptional programs in legal writing, moot court, public interest, and ethics and professionalism. College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (Atlanta) For more than a century, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences has maintained a tradition of excellence and a national reputation for producing outstanding leaders in the healthcare profession. In addition to the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, the College also offers the Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Master of Medical Sciences (Physician Assistant) degrees, and will begin offering the Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in Fall 2010. The College’s Center for Drug Delivery Research provides graduate students opportunities to conduct innovative research in formulation/solid dosage forms, microsphere/ nanotechnology, vaccine delivery and transdermal delivery. School of Medicine (Macon, Atlanta, Savannah) The School of Medicine was established in 1982 to educate physicians www.mercer.edu

and health professionals to meet the primary care and health care needs of rural and medically underserved areas of Georgia. The Mercer School of Medicine utilizes a problem-based medical education program that provides early patient care experiences. Such an academic environment fosters the early development of clinical problem-solving and instills in each student an awareness of the place of the basic medical sciences in medical practice. In fall 2007, the School of Medicine began working with Piedmont Healthcare to offer its Master of Family Therapy degree program in Atlanta. In August 2008, Mercer expanded its existing two-year clinical program at Memorial University Medical Center into a full four-year campus of the Mercer School of Medicine. Mercer’s medical school involvement in Savannah began in 1996 when the University established a clinical relationship with Memorial Health, which provided instruction for third- and fourth-year students. The expanded four-year program in Savannah employs the same curriculum and teaching methods as the Macon campus. Degrees offered: Doctor of Medicine, Master of Family Therapy, Master of Public Health and Master of Science in Anesthesia.
Eugene W. Stetson School of Business & Economics
(Macon, Atlanta, Savannah, Douglas County Center, Henry County Center) Mercer’s Stetson School of Business and Economics offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Macon and Atlanta, graduate degrees in Savannah and Henry County, and an undergraduate degree in Douglas County. The innovative MAPS undergraduate curriculum in Macon allows students to identify their interest and, with their adviser, develop a program of study that incorporates and balances a strong 6

business curriculum with individual career aspirations. The School holds the highest level of accreditation for business education by the prestigious AACSB International — the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. School of Engineering (Macon)
Innovative and academically challenging engineering and engineeringrelated programs provide students with a comprehensive education, featuring a solid foundation in mathematics and sciences, a range of courses in engineering specialties and a strong emphasis on superior communication skills. The School of Engineering marked its 20th anniversary in 2005 by breaking ground for a new Science and Engineering building, which opened in fall 2007. In U.S. News & World Report, the School of Engineering tied in ranking 38th nationally among engineering schools that offer the bachelor’s or master’s degree as the highest obtainable degree and fourth among engineering schools in the Southeast. Tift College of Education (Macon, Atlanta, Savannah and Centers) The Tift College of Education prepares more teachers than any other private college or university in Georgia. It offers baccalaureate and graduate degrees and has programs on the Macon, Atlanta and Savannah campuses as well as in the University’s Regional Academic Centers. Guided by the conceptual framework of the “Transforming Practitioner,” the College is dedicated to preparing effective teachers and educational leaders who are willing to grow and to change throughout their careers, while also seeking to transform the lives of all students. Among the College’s great strengths are its dedicated faculty and its ongoing commitment to its students. James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology (Atlanta) Established in 1996, McAfee School of Theology brings Jesse Mercer’s founding vision of providing students with a classical and theological education full circle as it prepares students for the ministry. McAfee shares Jesse Mercer’s concern that churches have pastor-leaders who understand scripture and can clearly articulate their Christian beliefs. The School offers master’s and doctoral degrees, along with a growing number of ministerial concentrations. The innovative and fully integrated curriculum is taught by 8

nationally recognized scholars who are committed Christians. Along with a broad network of partner churches, McAfee is affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Georgia Baptist College of Nursing (Atlanta) Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, the oldest nursing program in Georgia, is strongly grounded in its heritage of educating students who are nationally recognized for the provision of superior nursing care. All undergraduate nursing students are members of the National Student Nurses Association, thus providing them with superior leadership and professional development opportunities. Outstanding faculty and staff are dedicated to advancing the institution’s vision of being known as a center for academic excellence that fosters the development of nurses committed to practice in evolving global environments. The acclaimed Piedmont Nursing Scholars program was established to attract highly qualified students to enroll at Mercer to study nursing and to receive clinical experience at Piedmont Healthcare. College of Continuing and Professional Studies (Macon, Atlanta, Centers) The College of Continuing and Professional Studies is committed to meeting the educational goals of working adults. The College offers cross-disciplinary undergraduate and graduate degree programs and provides professional contract training for non-profit organizations and public agencies in metro Atlanta and beyond. The mission of the College is to offer academic programs and lifelong learning opportunities to working adults who seek leadership roles in their communities and beyond, professional transition and advancement, and lives that have meaning and purpose. In pursuing this goal, the College provides working adults with distinctive multidisciplinary programs that integrate theory and practice, liberal learning and professional education, and knowledge and experience in distinctive ways. The College also contributes to the quality of education provided to students enrolled in other academic units by offering general education and elective courses at the Regional Academic Centers and on the Macon and Atlanta campuses. Townsend School of Music (Macon) Townsend School of Music is nationally recognized for its outstanding faculty, award-winning students, wide variety of performance ensembles and state-of-the-art facilities. Townsend offers a thorough and challenging curriculum, providing a conservatory-quality music education within a rich, yet rigorous, university environment. Students benefit from small class sizes and individual attention from artist faculty who perform regularly on campus and in major musical events throughout the United States and abroad. Specialized music programs include the Townsend-McAfee Institute for Graduate Church Music Studies and the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings. Division of Library Services The primary mission of Mercer University libraries is to serve as a learning-centered gateway of information resources through strong collections and innovative, technology-rich patron services to support the educational needs of the University community. The four Mercer libraries and three Regional Academic Center libraries offer a wide variety of print, non-print and electronic resources, including Web-based library catalogs and remotely accessible full-text databases. Mercer is a full participant in GALILEO, the awardwinning statewide library network that brings a wide variety of full-text resources, e-books and indexes to the researcher’s desktop. Tift College Scholars Mercer University has partnered with the Tift College Alumnae Association to preserve the legacy of Tift College, a Baptist women’s college in Forsyth, Georgia, that merged with Mercer more than 20 years ago, through the Tift College Scholars Association. The program honors a select group of young women at Mercer with scholarships and inclusion in one of the University’s most distinguished scholastic organizations. A committee of Tift College alumnae interviews and selects the scholars from applicants who meet the University’s high academic standards. A Tift Scholar is known for her intellect, spirituality, commitment and dedication to her school, family, church and community. Upon graduation, the senior Tift Scholars are awarded a bronze medallion, signifying their selection and participation in the program. Tift Scholars are an important part of the enduring legacy that began at Tift College almost 160 years ago and continues today at Mercer.
International Programs The Office of International Programs manages the International Student and Scholar Services Program (F-1 Visa and J-1 Visa Advising), the Study Abroad Program, the English Language Institute (ELI), and all other forms of student and faculty exchange programs. Through the Office of International Programs, Mercer students have study abroad and service-learning opportunities in more 12

than 20 countries around the world, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Morocco, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. The Office of International Programs is located on both the Macon and Atlanta campuses.
Mercer On Mission Mercer On Mission offers transformational experiences to Mercer students through participation in high-impact international service-learning opportunities. In 2009 Mercer On Mission sent seven faculty-led teams of students to Brazil, Greece, Guatemala, Kenya, Liberia, Thailand and Vietnam. In 2010 our teams will go to Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Moldova, Mozambique, South Africa and Vietnam. The five-week summer program — designed for undergraduate students — includes two weeks of study on the Macon campus and three weeks abroad.
ROTC The Mercer University ROTC unit was activated in 1947. Today, the program commissions officers into one of 15 basic U.S. Army branches and into the active Army, U.S. Army Reserve and the Army National Guard. With military science instruction and associated activities, ROTC courses are open to all students as electives and without obligation. The courses aim to develop leadership and managerial potential, provide an understanding of the requirements and organization for national security and instill a strong sense of personal integrity and individual responsibility. www.mercer.edu

The Grand Opera House The Grand Opera House, a performing arts center of Mercer University, is a historic, 1,000-seat theatre located in downtown Macon. The Grand brings live, professional performing arts and entertainment to Central Georgia. In addition to its Broadway Series of nationally-touring productions and its GrandKids Arts Education Series for thousands of elementary, middle and high school students each year, The Grand hosts a variety of special events. The Executive Forum Established in 1979, The Executive Forum is Georgia’s premier business enrichment program. An outreach program of the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics and the Office of University Advancement, the Forum is a resource for working professionals in Macon and Atlanta. Mercer Engineering Research Center (MERC) Mercer Engineering Research Center (MERC), an operating unit of Mercer 14

University, employs more than 170 engineers, scientists, logisticians, and support staff collectively possessing a broad range of expertise in scientific and engineering disciplines. The Center provides engineering, scientific investigation, logistics and management support, and educational services to a broad range of government and commercial customers. The diversity of expertise of MERC’s staff and its integrated product team approach increases efficiency and cost effectiveness while creating a unique environment for research, development, design, and analysis. Since its inception in 1987, MERC has exceeded $267 million in contract awards. MERC also offers internship opportunities for Mercer students who work closely with MERC engineers and scientists in a broad range of areas supplying support in the execution of client contracts. This hands-on experience allows Mercer students to add depth to their education while gaining a better understanding of expertise provided to customers and clients in solving real-world problems.
Mercer University Press Celebrating its 30th year, Mercer University Press has published more than 1,200 books since its establishment in 1979. It publishes approximately 35-40 scholarly books each year, generally in the areas of religion, philosophy, SouthU N I V E R S I T Y P R E S S ern history and culture, regional studies and literature. The Press holds membership in the Association of American University Presses.

University Athletics Mercer University is the only private NCAA Division I institution in Georgia and competes in the Atlantic Sun Conference, of which Mercer was a founding member. In the 2008-2009 academic year, 64 percent of all student-athletes earned conference allacademic honors. The grade-point-average for all studentathletes for the year was 3.164. Mercer’s 14 intercollegiate teams include men’s baseball, basketball, cross-country, golf, soccer, tennis and air rifle, and women’s basketball, www.mercer.edu

cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Men’s lacrosse will be added in 2010-2011 and women’s lacrosse in 2011-2012. Other members of the Atlantic Sun Conference are Belmont, Campbell, East Tennessee State, Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Stetson, North Florida and South Carolina Upstate.
University Center The 230,000-square-foot University Center, known as the UC, serves as the focal point of activity for students, faculty and staff on the Macon campus. The $40-million facility offers a full schedule of activities from intramural sports to social gatherings, as well as a place to get a quick lunch or catch up on e-mails. A major feature of the building is a 3,200-seat arena, home to the Mercer Bears basketball and volleyball teams. Offering far more than athletic events, the UC houses the Bear Rock Café, food court, fitness center, varsity athletic team rooms, athletic offices, recreation programs, the Griffin B. Bell Board Room, Presidents Dining Room and Heritage Hall. Health and wellness are also major programs housed in the University Center. In addition to hosting the campus Wellness Program, the UC offers fitness classes for all

levels. Students combine fitness and fun with cardio kickboxing, ballroom dancing, yoga, aerobics, weight training and martial arts. An indoor track overlooks three intramural courts, and the well-equipped fitness center overlooks the indoor lap pool, where students can enjoy a swim or take a kayak roll workshop. While the UC is first and foremost a student building, Mercer also holds events that are of interest to Macon and Central Georgia. With a stateof-the art sound system, the UC arena also serves as an entertainment and event venue with a seating capacity, adding arena floor seating, of more than 3,600.
Alumni Approximately 65,000 Mercer alumni, including graduates of Tift College, live in all 50 states and in more than 70 countries. The Mercer University Alumni Association, governed by a National Board of Directors and an Alumni Board of Directors for each school or college, seeks to promote the commitment of alumni to the University. The Association sponsors events each year, including Homecoming on the Macon campus and “Mercer Connections� in cities where alumni live, and maintains a secure Online Alumni Directory at no charge to Mercer and Tift alumni.
Educational Partnerships Warner Robins Air Logistics Center The Warner Robins Air Logistics Center is the largest entity housed at Robins Air Force. In 1983, the WRALC and Mercer began discussions about the critical need www.mercer.edu

for engineers at the WRALC. As a result, the University established the School of Engineering in 1985 and Mercer Engineering Research Center in 1987. The educational partnership was formally renewed in 2004. The relationship continues to grow with the addition of Mercer’s Science and Engineering Building, which opened fall 2007. Today, Mercer is the WRALC’s largest source of engineers. Center for Health & Learning Piedmont Healthcare and Mercer University have formed a partnership that houses a number of joint initiatives, including nursing, pharmacy, research and other medical and allied health education programs, as part of the Center for Health and Learning. One of the first initiatives of the Center was the establishment of the Piedmont Nursing Scholars at Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, a move designed to address the critical shortage of nurses in Georgia. In fall 2007, the School of Medicine also began working with Piedmont to offer its Master of Family Therapy degree program in Atlanta. It is the first accredited master’s-level family therapy degree offered in the Atlanta area. Mercer’s third health sciences unit, the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, also collaborates with Piedmont on a Physician Assistant program that enrolled its first students in January 2008.
