$5 MillioN stUdENt CENtER Gift (continued from page 1) “It’s a wonderful thing for me to be able to do this for the students, to give them a gift they will use and enjoy every day.” A true student center at Mercersburg is long overdue. Students need an inviting, stimulating place where everyone can meet and connect. The new center will give students a space outside their respective dorms and classrooms that is truly theirs, where they develop the social, interpersonal, and relational skills that will prepare them for college and for life. A new student center is a key initiative of the Mercersburg Plan. The Simon Student Center has been conceived and designed with the student, the student experience, and the positive outcomes for residential and academic life in mind. There, students will have opportunities to connect with other students and faculty, collaborate on projects, and take part in formal and informal experiences that are just as important as classroom time. The Simon Student Center will be deliberately constructed to include many different areas so every student can find his or her own level of Photo courtesy of The Indianapolis Star

The new plans will also move and expand the game room, meeting rooms, school store, and other spaces. “It has everything I would have wanted when I was 16,” says Simon. author James crutchfield were selected in 2009 to produce the books. Their team made nearly a dozen trips to Mercersburg over a 12-month period. hood believes the character and traditions of Mercersburg really shine through in the books’ photographs, culled from tens of thousands of images taken by him and his team. Though the photos of the gnarled cherry tree outside the chapel changing through the seasons are his personal favorites, he said that the obvious bond between coaches, faculty, and students is what stood out most during many hours of shooting. “i would watch these interactions on the sidelines of the football field or in the drama department or in a classroom, and you could see that the teachers and coaches didn’t just want their kids to do what was required; they wanted them to be inspired,” hood shares. it is a pleasure to be able to offer this stunning book set to all who care about this special place. To purchase your own boxed set of these books capturing unique Mercersburg experiences, please call 717-328-6146, visit www.mercersburgstore.com, or print and mail an order form from www.mercersburg.edu/photobook. Loyalty club chapel Window campaign Reaches its goal WE arE pLEasED To announcE ThaT the Loyalty club’s efforts to raise funds needed to restore Irvine Memorial chapel’s holy grail window have been a resounding success. a total of 120 donors—most of whom are Loyalty club members, having celebrated their 50th class reunion—contributed more than $81,000 to the campaign. (In fact, enough funds have been contributed so that another window restoration project will be planned.) a cherished part of Mercersburg history, the holy grail window depicts King arthur and the Knights of the roundtable and includes a small image of headmaster William Mann Irvine’s pet dog. restoration of the final three panels of the 32-squarefoot window will entail removing each panel from the stone, re-leading the window, cleaning each piece of glass, and reinstalling the glass in a frame within the stone. Donors who stepped forward to help preserve this window were honored at reunion Weekend in June. a book of gratitude listing their names is also on display in the chapel.

This generosity has provided much needed support for scholarships and new facilities and has enhanced student programs such as international field study. You, too, can create a lasting legacy. Our gift planners will work with you and, if desired, your financial advisers to help you meet your individual philanthropic goals while securing your family’s future and strengthening Mercersburg at the same time.
