NEW FRONTIERS
In mid-March, I was brainstorming the ins and outs of this issue. As Editor, it is my responsibility to present the theme, and not just any theme, but one that rings loud and clear through every title, story, and photograph. This is the final issue of NuView for the year, and I knew we had to end with a bang. I was sitting at my desk, my graduation application peeking out from under the pile of notebooks and my trusty Merchandising Inc. President binder. In that moment, I was hit with a sense of “oh my god I'm graduating in two months. What next?” And there it was. We've all come a long way from wherever we started. For me, that's 17 years. For Merchandising Inc., the beginning is 27 years ago. We could all sit here and share stories about the past around a bonfire as the aroma of S'mores hits us, or we could face these “New Frontiers” head on. I'm curious about what's next for me, for you, for Merchandising Inc. Aren't you? Enjoy the issue. It's only onward and upward from here. - Subrina Hossain

27 Things Every College Student Should Know By Subrina Hossain I’ve spent 81% of my life in school. I’ve hit roadblocks, jumped over hurdles, soaked pillowcases with tears, embraced the helping hands of friends, and have come out at the end of these past 17 years with so much knowledge to share. The way you treat people is your reputation. Grades count, but soft skills like communication, professionalism, networking, and determination make all the difference. If you want something, go for it. Never step on others for personal gain. Success is possible without being destructively competitive. Your strengths are your differentiators. Utilize them to your advantage. Refuse to punish yourself for making mistakes. Learn from them and keep moving forward. The things you are good at aren’t just coincidences. More often than not, they are your calling. Everyone has a sob story. Rather than whining, use yours to fuel your fire. Make your mark. Leave something behind so great and influential that it inspires and motivates others long after you’re gone. From someone who always had something to do, somewhere to be, and slept an average of only five hours each night, know that it is okay and totally necessary to take breaks. Mine were spent at the gym. Exercise kept me healthy and also doubled as a stress reliever. If you’re not totally in love with your life, change it, improve it, and work towards building the life you desire. Count to ten before speaking when you are upset. Defeat shouldn’t discourage you. I’ve been rejected from internships and jobs, and yes, that sucked. After ten minutes of wallowing, I told myself, “There’s something better waiting.” And there was, every single time. As my dad used to say, there will always be someone better than me at something, but that’s okay because there are things only I rock at. Be wild and have fun. Life is too precious to be serious all the time. Only you can control how you feel in any given situation. You are endlessly creating yourself. Strive to become someone whom you would want to meet in the future. Life happens. Good friends and coffee helps. Don’t expect someone to “complete” you. Two wholes make a great relationship. Great accomplishments never come from comfort zones. I used to be the girl who sat silently in the corner, and now I can speak confidently to a room of hundreds. I made the choice to stand up and put myself in the front of the room. No one told me to. So remember, before you can become confidence, you must first be courageous. Don’t look back; it takes away from the now. Always say please and thank you, and throw kindness around like confetti. Courtesy is never in excess. Try not to take things personally and don’t make assumptions. If you really want to know, ask. Dress how you would want to be addressed. Practice humility over hubris. You only get one chance at a first impression. Make yours a great one. Your dreams are big enough only if they scare you. If you’re comfortable, you’re doing it wrong.

LETTING GO TO FORM A NEW FOUNDATION By Maia Wilson 2013 UNT Alumni, Charity and her husband, Andrew Heimbaugh built a house from the ground up and noted each phase of the process from the challenges, to the new furniture, to learning the steps of house ownership. To follow the rules of a normal American Lifestyle, first would come marriage, then would come buying a house, but Charity and Andrew decided to be a little bit more creative and built their house from scratch. The two met the very first day of their freshman year at UNT, both graduated in music, and have now been married for 2 ½ years. The Heimbaughs decided to take the next step and move from a rental house to their own permanent house in Denton, Texas. When I asked Charity why they decided to a house, she gleamed at the chance to answer my question. “Oh gosh! Space! We love having people over, like huge groups and it’s so open.” Also, they could have a pet, mentioning this she looks out at the yard for her little Chihuahua named Oliver, who they just recently got. They moved in at the end of March and their house was impressively decorated the next week when I interviewed her. They were able to customize their own house in their “dream neighborhood” by being involved in the long building process (7 and a half months total), which allowed them to choose their floor plan. “We spent one night staying up ‘til 4 am looking online at the floor plan options,” Charity said. Through each building stage, there were many challenges like the finish date constantly being pushed back because of the weather. And the real risk was finding people to take their rent for their old apartment; Charity stated, “once I let go though, everything just fell into place.” She then suggested I name the title of this article “No Control” (I think the one I chose is pretty close!). Once the house was all finished and ready to be decorated Charity found joy in embracing their “Modern Chic” style by using Pinterest as their inspiration (they would browse the site on their projector screen and Andrew would pick what he liked and didn’t like). “I sold everything we owned on Craigslist and then bargained for everything you see here [points to living room space] from Craigslist and Ikea. And while choosing décor that would coincide with their house they learned about their different opinions on decorating, for instance “Andrew doesn’t like stripes” and “he hates color” (hence, the neutrals in the room). Patience and persistence got them this house and though it may not be the typical starter home to some people, Charity states “we have jobs here and we both have futures here”, so their lives as homeowners have begun.

The Best Advice I Ever Got by Katie Couric Along with stories from Katie herself, this must read includes advice on how leaders like Maya Angelou and Michael J. Fox made mistakes, then ended up on top. It’s motivational and makes you want to push yourself to the limit. Bossypants by Tina Fey Tina Fey’s Not-so-memoir memoir is full of hilarious stories from her life and how she’s successful because of her “bossiness.” Just read the back cover and you’ll want to dive right in. #GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso CEO and founder of the online apparel store Nasty Gal, Sophia writes shocking statements that’ll make you want to start changing your mindset immediately. The Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell How do successful people get to where they are? It’s more about where they came from. This well-written book will tell you all about the factors that lead to your success no matter what career path you choose. It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want to Be by Paul Arden This one’s for the talented, yet timid. Packed with wisdom on advertising yourself, problem solving like a boss, being creative and gracefully making mistakes.
BOWLING FOR SOUP By Maia Wilson
Originally from Witchita Falls, Texas, pop-punk band members Jaret Reddick, Chris Burney, Eric Chandler, and Gary Wiseman moved to Denton in 1996 because it was “where everything was happening.” Their band name came from their interest of stand-up comedy, which was originally a joke “that never changed 21 years later.” During my interview with the lead singer, Jaret Reddick, he described the band’s passion and goal when writing their music and creating their music videos to make each other, as well as their fans, laugh after a long, hard day (I guess this is where the standup comedy comes from). You probably recognize them from their most popular songs: “1985,” that played all the time on the radio in 2004, “Girl all the bad guys want,” which he says defines them as a band, and the Disney TV show Phineas and Ferb theme song, “Best day ever.”
The Texas-lovers (They all have Texas tattoos!) perform music that brings a fresh spin on everyday life. For example, when I asked Reddick about the meaning behind their song “I’m gay,” he explained, this was at a time “when music was angry” and in the song when it says “Let’s start a movement”, they wanted to be the separation from “the mad-at-dad movement”. [People] don’t use gay as happy anymore, this title brought up attention and changes what people think the song is about.” The band’s “keep it simple mantra” allows them to “stay current and be smart about what’s going on in the world.” What’s in the near future for them? Their US tour starting in June (They are performing in Dallas on June 6th!!), also their new album with songs of their first ten years called “Songs People Actually Liked Vol 1” has recently been released. The last thing Reddick mentioned was to “be smart about things in life, put priorities in order and [don’t] be afraid to take risks.”

JUAN CASTANEDA HIPSTER GEEK IRON MAN FAN 3D TIE PRINTER By Erin Hall How did you come up with the idea? What inspired you to start making the ties? I started a little over a year ago. I bought the machine as a toy and it just started as a hobby. I have to wear a tie for my day job and the process of tying a tie takes skill and time, which I don’t have a lot of. I’ve always loved bow ties, I’m a hipster geek like that, and so I started printing the ties as a better alternative. The ties just slip onto a button and don’t require any tying at all. I How do you make the ties? How does the process work? The machine is like a 1ft. x 1 ft. x 1 ft. microwave. Inside are a couple motors that move on an x and y-axis and deposit plastic layer by layer. I have two pieces of software, design software and printing software. First I envision what it will look like in real life, then it’s sent to the coding program and finally to the machine to be printed. What are the costs associated with this hobby? What does it take to make the ties? A pair of bow tie takes about 3 hours to make. The plastic that is used to make the ties comes on a spool that costs about $30. The machine ranges from $500-$10,000. What’s your favorite thing you’ve made so far? A full size replica of the ironman mask. Do you have any big ideas in the works? I’m working on making Star-Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy and all of the props for the costume. I want to make the whole suit of ironman to go with the mask. I’m also looking at making cufflinks. Is there anybody you aspire to be like? Tony Stark. He embodies what I aim for in life: an arrogant greatness.

The Trunk Club is an online personal styling site for men that ships customers a customized trunk full of merchandise and gives them the option of shipping back items they don’t want. I had the privilege of interviewing Birdie Bartholomew, the Sales Director of the Dallas Trunk Club.

How does making a personal connection with male clients over the Internet vary in comparison to clients who are fitted in store from a stylist’s point of view? The major difference is the customer relationship that we build. We hold phone consultations and find out their hobbies, what their family life is like, and where they work to try to gain an understanding of the style that would fit them best. The Trunk Club stylists keep track of each client with files that include all of the email and phone correspondents, personal feedback, past purchases, and pictures that they have sent back to us. For a company that thrives through the e-commerce side of the industry, how do the 5 brick and mortar stores rate profitability wise in comparison to the online traffic? The brick and mortar stores are doing extremely well. Dallas was the first expansion from our home office in Chicago. We offer a whole new level of customer service. Men now have the opportunity to have face-to-face consultations with the same stylists they have been in correspondence with over the web or phone. We are also able to customize the clothes with our in-house tailor. I would estimate 70% of our business comes from the Trunk Club website and the other 30% is through our brick-and-mortar stores. Are there any plans to expand internationally? In the short term the answer would be no. We are still a young company. But because of our partnership with Nordstrom, there is a chance of expansion especially because they just opened up locations in Canada. How has the Trunk Club’s partnership with Nordstrom expanded the company’s recognition and overall traffic for the business? Our partnership with Nordstrom has immensely helped build our company recognition. Nordstrom brought in more revenue resources, offered us streamline tailoring and has aided in testing a women’s wear market for the Trunk Club. The Trunk Club’s primary target market is the executive businessman. Has there been any talk about a brand extension or licensing to a more moderate price-point for the average male consumer? We cater primarily to men in their mid to late thirties with a disposable income but lack the time to go out and dress themselves. Because of the success that we’ve had with this market, the Trunk Club is not looking to cater to a moderate price point. We have added inventory that is under $100 and it is possible to buy an entire outfit for $500. Our customers are paying for quality. How does the Trunk Club compete in terms of pricing of other high-end retailers or mass merchandisers with e-commerce sites such as Neiman Marcus or Barneys? The Trunk Club competes in terms of our personal relationships that we build with our customers. We are also specialized in menswear. A store like Neiman Marcus is going to have a wider selection of styles, but again our business model is about saving the precious commodity that time has become. We do all the work for them. According to Forbes, the Trunk Club buys wholesale and sells at their set retail price. What are some of the brands that you buy from and is there any talk of adding on new brands labels? We have over 100 different brands for our stylists to pull from. In our home store in Chicago we have an independent product team that helps produce merchandise that we sell. Some of the brands include: AG, Jeremy Argyle, Cole Haan, Ralph Lauren, Vince, Theory, and others.

Heat Map Technology
Now there is an automated voice to tell you “who’s the fairest of them all.” Magic Mirror is a state of the art device that allows you to try on over 50 different articles of clothing in less than a minute. The mirror will take your photo and even share it to your favorite social media website to get your friends’ insight before your final purchase. The mirror “genie” can even detect the color of the garment you are wearing and surprise you with a thoughtful greeting. As the garment recognition technology advances, the inquisition of personal stylists becoming obsolescent raises brows.
“Every move you make, every step you take, [retail analysts] will be watching you.” Scientific studies show that if a customer touches and picks up an item, they are more likely to buy it. This has spurred Prism Skylabs Inc. to create a monitor that responds to heat radiation. Retailers will no longer have to wonder what is and is not selling. The censored photographs show where the highest volumes of traffic in the store are located. This innovation will help visual merchandisers lay out the store in a way that will result in the highest productivity.

DAILY TECH ROUTINE Despite a begrudged relationship with mornings in general, Professor Zorola still makes time for a mixture of business and pleasure when it comes to her early morning tech routine. Her first to-do is to check the forecast on her weather app. Then she scans through her personal and work emails, making sure to reply promptly to emergency work-related emails. Facebook is next on her browsing list. Professor Zorola is not particularly keen on keeping up with specific bloggers or Instagrammers, but she does have a few favorite pages that she likes via Facebook such as MyFitFam, Maria Kang “No Excuses Mom,” and Luluaddict. She gets her daily fix on the business side of fashion news on websites such as WGSN and Style.com.

MAKE is a well-rounded beauty brand that sells all the cosmetic essentials. The thing that makes MAKE stand out in a sea of competitors is that they have teamed up with Mercado Global and Opportunity Threads to be able to give back to women in need. They give jobs to women in lower income communities in the U.S. and Guatemala who make their makeup bags with an indigenous theme. On top of that, 1/3 of the sales from all products on the website are given to We See Beauty Foundation which funds women-led cooperatives in the U.S. MAKE sees themselves as more than a beauty brand, they also express an interest in art and music.
