E M O C L E W D L E I F N A T TO S Stanfield Merchant Taylors’ is a co-educational school for girls and boys aged 4 to 11. Our school is a happy, caring place where eager young minds are encouraged to have a sense of joy, curiosity and confidence. Our highly qualified academic and support staff, unrivalled facilities and an unswerving commitment to opportunity and achievement combine to create a first-rate primary education for every child in our care. Children are nurtured and stimulated along their own personal journey of discovery and they develop as independent learners. They are also surrounded by peers who understand how to look after one another and whose vibrant, caring personalities make our school such a lovely place to be.

U O Y D DI ? W O N K Merchant Taylors’ has had a primary school at Stanfield for more than 75 years. The site was formerly home to a horse stables, after which the school is named to this day.

This is a happy environment where each child is encouraged to shine in their own individual and not be afraid to make and learn from mistakes. Together, we share an incredible pride in our school and we would be thrilled if you and your child were to join us. Miss E Lynan, Headmistress

AN EXCELLENT EDUCATION There is nothing quite as wonderful as a child’s expression when he or she grasps a new concept for the first time, or experiences that moment of awe and wonder. By nurturing their creativity and encouraging independent thinking, we aim to educate the whole child, underpinned by excellent academic attainment and dedicated pastoral care. From day one, children are encouraged to develop their individual talents and have a love of life. We want pupils to have a passion for independent learning which goes far beyond the classroom, so we offer them opportunities within our bespoke curriculum for creative thinking, individual learning and adventure. As an independent school, we follow parts of the national curriculum but also enjoy the freedom to develop our own schemes of work appropriate to the needs of our pupils.

We blend traditional teaching methods with an innovative approach that is designed to challenge and inspire young minds. Boys and girls are often at different stages of learning and development, so we make sure that we are able to take care of each child’s specific needs and interests. It is important for children to enjoy the right balance between work and play – they should be stretched but never stressed. A close understanding of each pupil allows us to create an atmosphere of fun where they can develop a high level of self-esteem.

In 2019, our Junior Boys’ School became part of Stanfield to provide co-educational learning from age 4 to 11. Boys currently in Year 4, 5 and 6 are taught at the former Junior Boys’ site until September 2023.

ONLINE LEARNING

We believe that learning should never stop. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been able to minimise any disruption to our children’s education, even during lockdown periods.

This provision is underpinned by direct IT and technical support for parents and pupils to ensure they are able to access lessons and resources from home.

Using a variety of online platforms, our pupils have been able to enjoy thousands of live lessons with their own teachers and our staff have been able to provide one-to-one support for those children who needed it.

We are proud of our remote learning capability and it gives us great confidence that we are well-equipped to help pupils handle any future challenges we may face, together.

LEARNING SUPPORT Our specialist learning support team is highly experienced in helping girls and boys with a variety of special educational needs at primary school level. We recognise pupils of all abilities may experience obstacles to learning and our aim is to treat each child as an individual and support their needs. We believe in a pupil-centred approach and liaise closely with your child and yourselves to ensure a bespoke learning environment. Support is given to pupils from Reception through to Year Six with particular learning needs, such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and social and communication needs, as well as children who just need a little extra support to facilitate their learning in a particular area.

This is delivered in a range of ways, including specially-designed individual lessons, small group work, support in the classroom and specialist advice and support for class teachers. Our team are also experienced at using educational assessment to learn more about a child’s individual learning profile to make teaching and learning more effective. We are committed to identifying and meeting the individual learning needs of every child from an early age so that they can make effective progress and experience success in their school journey. For our Gifted & Talented pupils we provide many opportunities across the school to stretch and challenge, creating a flexible thinking environment and promoting enrichment and their curiosity to learn.

UNLIMITED OPPORTUNITIES We try to open doors for all our pupils, coaxing even the most reluctant child to have a go at something new. It is good to gently push forward boundaries within a safe and secure environment; this is how we grow as individuals. Our extensive extra-curricular and enrichment programme includes:

Music

Specialist lessons and peripatetic instrumental teaching, where children explore their own creativity from an early age and take part in regular concerts.

Performing Arts

A particular strength of our school, with several high-calibre productions throughout the year.

Clubs

Including chess, Mandarin and Ukulele, take place across the year, so there is something for everyone.

Trips

Academic day trips, visits to theatres and museums, residential breaks and ski trips for older pupils.

Visitors

Organised termly for each year group to help us deliver a rounded curriculum.

Themed activity days

Enrich our curriculum and allow the whole school to get involved.

Competitive sports

Children are encouraged to take part from a young age and our junior teams regularly reach national finals in rugby, football, swimming and biathlon.

Sports and activities

Tennis, badminton, basketball, golf, crosscountry, as well as groups such as Eco Warriors and Podcasters.

UNRIVALLED FACILITIES We offer state-of-the-art teaching rooms, an outstanding unit for our Reception pupils, a specialist Art and Science room and a Music studio. A £500,000 redevelopment is currently underway that will completely reimagine our large playground area. From Spring this year, it will feature a MUGA (multi-use games area), an experimental learning zone, a new active play area, an imaginative play space, redesigned wildlife garden and pond and a sensory play zone. In addition to our spacious hall, children use shared facilities including the magnificent Sports Centre and playing fields at the Boys’ School, the extensive sports ground at Hall Road and the AstroTurf at the local Northern Club.

Sharing facilities with our senior school colleagues means we can offer opportunities not available at many primary schools, including science laboratories for exciting projects, the ‘Green Room’ for filming or the kiln for pottery. We also share teaching expertise across the curriculum, which builds familiarity to support a smoother transition for children at Year 6.

OUR NEW PLAYGROUND TAKING SHAPE

CARING, CONFIDENT CHILDREN We want to develop compassionate, caring young people who have the life skills to take their place successfully and responsibly in society. Our school is a happy, hardworking environment where girls and boys are carefully nurtured to achieve their potential. Pupils share a real sense of caring and we pride ourselves on being there to give each other an encouraging smile or a sympathetic ear at all times. ‘Caring for the Individual Time’ is available for those children who need a little more support and suitable challenge is built into the curriculum to keep lively young minds active and alert. As children progress, they gain the confidence to push their boundaries and respond positively to the pace of learning set by their teachers. Excellent resources support well-planned teaching, delivered with imagination, and allow for a wide range of learning styles. The children have written our school rules and cheerful good manners and consideration for others are the norm here. A flourishing house system

encourages good discipline and work habits in pupils of all ages. Weekly house assemblies provide leadership opportunities for older children, who present younger students with merit badges and other awards. Our school council is a platform for children to develop social skills, gain self-confidence and express their views, while class forums ensure every pupil’s opinion is heard, enabling them to learn the skills to become active citizens. Fundraising is a part of school life and encourages children to think about others less fortunate than themselves. They also participate actively in a range of environmental projects through our Eco Council and we are proud of our Green Flag status. This child-centred approach means many opportunities are available for children to work together to achieve success, both individually and as part of a team.
