Welcome to MTBS
Congratulations on gaining a place at Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School I am delighted that you will be joining us
I can well remember my own emotions when I joined the school: a mixture of excitement, enthusiasm and a little nervousness I can also remember how kind and friendly everyone was, helping me fit in, answering my questions and pointing me in the right direction when I appeared a little lost I am certain that you will find that there are many people, both older pupils and staff, who are only too keen to help you settle quickly into life at Merchant Taylors'
We all want you to do well at school but, above all, we want you to be content and to make the most of all the opportunities that are available to you Boys who are busy and who throw themselves whole-heartedly into all aspects of school life are often those who are most happy
I am really looking forward to getting to know you and your parents over the course of the year
Have a good summer and I will see you in September

So, what is Merchants?
Merchants is not just a school; it is a family environment where so many students can flourish with the amazing opportunities given
Merchant Taylors is a place for every student to feel heard, included, and somewhere that pupils can go to make everlasting relationships Merchant Taylors provides a structured environment for learning and socialisation which can help pupils to develop skills and knowledge that will benefit them throughout their lives It also provides opportunities for pupils to explore their interests and passions and to develop friendships and connections which will last a lifetime
Merchants can also provide a sense of purpose for so many students and help pupils set high goals which can be achieved and attained by using a sense of responsibility
In School, every day is a new chance to try something new, and you should try to grasp every opportunity that arises by throwing yourself into School life This will allow you to make lots of friends and to learn new things about yourself and new hobbies that you may enjoy doing
When you start here in September, try to immerse yourself in lots of exciting new opportunities, this will allow you to meet many different people, who could become lifelong friends No matter if you already know anyone or not, it is always a good idea to take advantage of opportunities you are being given to meet new people and try to make lots of new connections Moving to secondary school is a big change for anyone, especially those moving from a different school You may feel scared about what is to come, but don’t worry, this is natural As the head boy team, we were all once in your position and felt the way you are now feeling However, we are here to remind you that although this may be daunting it is also exciting and you have many things ahead to look forward to
As we were once where you are now we can offer some useful advice to help you make this step Firstly, Merchants has a lot to offer and as we mentioned earlier, we encourage you to take every new opportunity that comes your way to ensure you have the best time possible whilst here Throw yourself into every experience even if you have to venture outside your comfort zone Merchants will be a welcoming environment with a friendly face around the corner, don’t be afraid to reach out to someone if you need help or reassurance, this is perfectly normal and nothing to shy away from
You will meet many amazing new people and make friends for life and it is important to remember not to compare yourself to others, everyone ’ s experience is different Finally, your first day is one of many so don’t be disheartened if your new school life is not immediately perfect Take it day by day and remind yourself this new experience is a journey
Something to look forward to about Merchants
is that it will allow you to demonstrate who you are as a person and reach your full potential You will be able to discover what inspires you and the things you are passionate about During your time here, you will develop as an individual and discover more about yourself We encourage you to push yourself in all aspects of school life as well as take a break when you need it and look after your mental health
You’re lucky to be at the very beginning of your story here, you have endless possibilities awaiting you We are very jealous as we have loved our time here and made lasting memories, it has flown by so make the most of every moment
We hope you have an amazing time at Merchants and we can’t wait to meet you and offer any advice you may need
Head Boy Team Merchant Taylors' Boys' School
A Special Welcome from our Current Year 7 Pupils
Hi, my name is Max and I'm here to talk about joining MTBS You may be feeling a bit nervous or even a bit excited for the coming September, but there is no need to feel scared, everyone has felt what you are feeling right now Whether it be fear or if you feel anxious, you will always have someone else who has felt that way and has made it through that feeling For example, when I joined, I was very anxious about it and was quite scared in the morning, but after I had found my friends and had talked to them, I felt ready to see how the week went Everyone in the School has gone through that and they know how it feels, so don’t be afraid to speak up For the first few weeks so many people gave me, or others, a fist pump or a high five and said well done, I don’t think I could walk through the English hallway without getting one Everyone has done this, and you can talk to anyone to ask how they did it, you will always get great advice
Once you are all together, you will be sorted into your houses by our one and only sorting hat! It will tell everyone what house they are in The houses are Stevens (Purple), Waring (Green), Harrison (Yellow) and Armour (Red) I’m in Waring, the current sports day champions, so if you ’ re put in Waring, have fun knowing you ’ ve been put in the best house All the others are good as well, but Waring is, of course, in my opinion at least, the best!
You will then go round with your Form Tutor and look around the School for a bit and you will be given a timetable and you must listen hard in the tour But if you get lost, you can ask a teacher where to find your classrooms
The subjects you will have are Classics/Latin, PSHE, Maths, TENDO, English, Science, History, Geography, DT, Music, French, Spanish, Computer Science, Drama, PE, Games, RS and Art
You will have many school trips We have been on a zoo trip, a residential and a museum trip The residential was for 2 nights, and we took part in many fun events The zoo trip was to Chester Zoo, and we saw all the animals and took part in a special classroom event The museum trip was for what we have studied in TENDO with cultural history of Liverpool
There are many opportunities here for you ranging from after school clubs to lunchtime clubs to even learning an instrument, there is something for everyone to do and find fun You will be given a task on Firefly with the clubs for the term and there will be a sheet in the library in case you forget
Some advice we were given at the start of the year was to say yes to everything that was presented to you because it will only benefit to you in the end You should definitely aim to try as many new things as you possibly can
I’m advising you to try and get on with everyone in your Form because you will be with them for the entire year, and it will be good to make new friends and it will improve your happiness and yourself as a person
I hope you have a great Summer and I'll look forward to seeing you and all the new Year 7s in September
Max HalsallWelcome Merchant Taylors'
Hi! My name is Osman, and hope you are excited to join our school, Merchant Taylors MTBS is not like any other school, however you will still make friends, learn, and have fun!
Girls School
You will have had an opportunity to tour the school on Induction Day like I did last year, so you know where to go and who your form tutor is You and the new year 12s will only be in on that Induction day so you don’t need to worry about anyone bothering you After this, the school year will start where you will start your adventure will MTBS
When I first started Merchant Taylors, and for two weeks or so, admittedly I got lost Most of the classes were still new to me and I was a bit nervous about starting Senior School However, my teachers and my new friends I had just made were all very nice to me, and made me feel welcome
You’ll be put into forms on that day into one of the four houses we have at Merchant Taylors, which are Armour, Harrison, Stevens, and Waring I I was put into Waring – the best house! From then you will stay within these houses throughout your time in MTBS, where you will make friends and compete in house competitions to be the best house! If you get into Waring, you should be honoured!
Usually, you will have five lessons a day, with transitions or breaks in between Lessons are sixtyfive minutes long, and transitions are often around ten minutes long, but it mostly depends on the teacher, whether if they’re late or early In transition time, you have a chance to fill your water bottle, go to the toilets and head to your next lesson Like me, you most likely will get lost, but teachers and older boys will be happy to help you If you ' re late for the first few weeks, there is nothing to worry about, as every new school year, it happens, and the teachers will understand
Break and Lunchtimes have a range of activities you can do, whether it is playing chess in the library, talking to friends, or just exploring the school
The school has lots of trips and events happening throughout the year These include drama productions, sports events such as rugby fixtures in Autumn, football and hockey fixtures in spring, and cricket fixtures in the summer, and trips either nationally or internationally, like going to the Lake District, or going to Madrid like many of the students did when I was in Year 7 There are sports teams for the sport lovers, and sometimes there will be training camps either in or out of the school, at lunch or afterschool There are also competitions that don't include sports, such as the chess congress I participated in last year
For the first few weeks, teachers will let you settle into their class, and won’t set much homework for you, usually one piece of homework per week That might sound a lot, considering you have a teacher for each subject, however some teachers won’t even set homework at all! You will get a timetable which has the classroom, subject and the name of the teacher, but beware! You have a week A timetable and a week B timetable; you don’t want to bring the wrong books for the day or go to a class you aren’t supposed to be in In MTBS, we use many online resources, one of them being Firefly
I know you will love it here and I hope that you are looking forward to starting your journey at MTBS

TENDO
Our afternoon activity programme is known as TENDO, which means ‘to stretch and extend’
At Merchants’ we aim to develop you into welleducated, well-rounded and caring young men who will play a significant role in society We want to nurture you in a spirit of inquiry and curiosity which will see you explore various interests, whatever they might be The activity programme is something you will do throughout your whole time at Merchants’ and as you progress up the school you will be given different opportunities
We aim to offer activities from a wide range of
Extracurricular Opportunities
TENDO offers a dynamic range of activities which harness your strengths whilst also challenging you to develop new skills and talents that you may not know you have
In Years 7 and 8 you will follow a programme in a carousel over the course of the year giving you a broad experience of enrichment activities We want to foster curiosity and creativity through a broad programme of activities which you will rotate around Activities will include things such as Norse Mythology, Information Literacy, a Music Ensemble and Orienteering We don’t just confine ourselves to the School site either, the Museums of Liverpool activity will involve visits to some of our local venues
HARRISON House Competitions
STEVENS

The Houses at MTBS are:
Armour
Harrison
Stevens
Waring
We also run an Inter-House Quiz and there are likely to be other subject related events for you to enjoy The Houses also work together for charity events too
The House Cups and Shields are all highly prized and competitively fought for in challenging and fun competitions Be proud of your House and try to represent it in different competitions
You will get to know boys in other years who are in your House and they will cheer you on Have a look on the House noticeboards to see what is going on within your House
Typically, you should receive homework from no more than three subjects per night, each of these taking around twenty minutes to complete Not all homework is due in the next day Your teacher will always tell you what the homework is and when it is due in, and will publish this information on Firefly Homework is really important as it tells us what you have understood, gives you the opportunity to hone key skills and helps you prepare for upcoming lessons We would advise, when possible, to do homework on the night that it is set so that you have time to see a teacher if you are stuck Sometimes you will be set work which you will need to complete over a number of days/ weeks so it's important to stay organised, and not leave things until the last moment
The Year 7 curriculum is all about you being a curious, creative and confident learner You should always aim to explore interesting questions and ideas There will be assessments in certain subjects at specific times of the year, and summer exams, but this is nothing to worry about Each subject has their own set of marking criteria and your teacher will explain to you how your work is graded and how you know what progress you are making
In order to keep you organised, fully informed and give you access to learning materials from each of your teachers, Merchant Taylors’ School uses 'Firefly' This takes over the role that homework diaries or planners used to have Firefly is a website that will act as an organiser telling you what lessons you have coming up It will also have resources to help you learn, such as videos, presentations and documents Firefly helps you in recording homework, keeping a schedule of what homework needs to be done, and by when It will even allow you to submit work to teachers from home
Organisation & Homework

Keep our school tidy and put all litter in the bins
Do not run inside the school building
Do not leave your School Bag or your PE bag in the corridor
Observe the silence rule going into and out of assembly
Make sure you stay organised: prepare everything you need the night before and make sure you take everything home with you at the end of the School day
