THE SIMPLEST AND MOST PRACTICAL LESSON I KNOW IS...
“THE SIMPLEST AND MOST PRACTICAL LESSON I KNOW IS... BE GOOD TODAY, BUT BETTER TOMORROW. CATHERINE McAULEY
FOUNDER OF THE SISTERS OF MERCY
Who will you be tomorrow? At Mercyhurst University, we think the answer to this question starts with what you do today. This simple, practical idea—so wonderfully captured by Catherine McAuley— underlies all that we do and drives us to embrace opportunity within our gates and around the globe. In research, study, competition, service and every other dimension of the Laker Life, we strive to build a community that is exciting and challenging, engaging and practical, intimate yet limitless. You have an important decision ahead of you. And as much as we like to brag about Mercyhurst, it’s really about you. The things that make you special make Mercyhurst special, and these next four years are your opportunity to embrace these ideas and become the person you want to be. This is your time to grow, to discover something new, to ignite your passions and share them with the world. It’s your time to seize the day.
CARPE DIEM.
Welcome! The college search experience is an exciting time for you and your family, and I appreciate your consideration of Mercyhurst University. At Mercyhurst, we celebrate higher education as more than a brief transactional stage in your life. Ahead of you is an exciting period of intellectual growth, career preparation and new friends. The applied liberal arts tradition at the heart of a Mercyhurst education prepares our graduates to thrive as innovative leaders who are able to think and adapt in a changing world. What truly makes Mercyhurst stand out, however, is the encouraging atmosphere of generosity among your professors, advisers, peers and friends. To be sure, a Mercyhurst education is challenging and even uncomfortable at times—a transformative education always is—as we push you to re-examine your beliefs and assumptions, and engage with different points of view. But amidst these challenges, your Mercyhurst family will be there to offer you support and encouragement throughout your educational journey. I invite you to read on and discover more about Mercyhurst and what makes us unique. If our dreams and values resonate with your own, I sincerely hope you’ll consider joining the Mercyhurst family. Our admissions counselors and I look forward to the opportunity to get to know you in person. Carpe Diem,
Michael T. Victor, J.D., LL.D. President, Mercyhurst University
MERCY MISSION
“We strive to witness to mercy when we reverence the dignity of each person, create a spirit of hospitality, and pursue integrity of word and deed in our lives. Constitution of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas
PIONEERS IN JUSTICE AND SERVICE Mercyhurst University owes its existence to a remarkable group of determined, forwardthinking women: the Sisters of Mercy. Sensing the need for quality higher education for women in the early 20th century, the Sisters led the way in establishing a college on 75 acres of farmland overlooking Lake Erie. In the years leading up to Mercyhurst’s opening in 1926, the Sisters negotiated land deals, worked as laborers and painters, and even pursued graduate degrees from top American universities to form the first Mercyhurst faculty. More than 90 years later, the pioneering ideals of these remarkable women live on in the groundbreaking ideas and good works of our campus. Like the Sisters, we realize that determination and unconventional thinking are essential when bringing new ideas to fruition. We strive to live out the Mercy Mission of service and hospitality, embracing social justice and building an open-minded campus that welcomes people from all walks of life. We champion faith and reason as we explore new answers to age-old questions, engage each other in thought-provoking discussions and exercise leadership in service toward a just world.

CAMPUS
LIFE
Home is where the Hurst is. At Mercyhurst, students are the true architects of the Laker Life. What happens outside the classroom depends largely on your passions, ideals and perspectives. But don’t worry: there’s no shortage of opportunity. Our campus is alive with activity day and night, and our students are engaged in a vast array of experiences: planning events, heading up clubs, and volunteering locally and across the nation. At the heart of everything is the Sister Carolyn Herrmann Student Union, bringing together the academic, social, spiritual, cultural and recreational happenings on campus. As you walk under the Gothic arches and across the grassy quads and redbrick plazas, you’ll find spots on campus for everything from quiet study to a pickup game of Frisbee. Everywhere you go you’ll see the diversity of thought, backgrounds and interests inherent in the Laker lifestyle. It’s not uncommon to see musicians, varsity athletes, chemists and student government reps hanging out together, a profound example of the open-mindedness that permeates our student body.
SpringFest brings to campus artists like T-Pain, Daya, MKTO, Andy Grammer, Reel Big Fish, Plain White T’s and Cassio Monroe.

WELL BEYOND WELL-BEING
Located in suburban Erie, Pennsylvania, on a hill overlooking Lake Erie, our campus is known as one of the most beautiful in the region. However, it’s not the campus’ 75 scenic acres or English Gothic architecture that make Mercyhurst home (though they do help). Life as a Laker is about thriving physically, intellectually, socially and emotionally—and challenging one another to the highest levels of growth. Three freshman residence halls help support first-year students in the transition to university life while promoting academic and social growth. A new $25 million suite-style sophomore residence hall is slated to open in Fall 2018, further enhancing the residential college experience at Mercyhurst. Upperclassmen live in apartment- and townhouse-style residences at the east end of campus. Heading off to college can be a difficult adjustment at first. That’s why on-campus health and wellness services, available through the Cohen Student Health Center and the Counseling Center, and academic support services are available free of charge to all Mercyhurst students. Knowing assistance is here if you need it allows you to focus on why you came to Mercyhurst in the first place.
Coming Fall 2018
PERFORMING ARTS, CREATIVE INSPIRATION Creative and artistic expressions are essential dimensions of life at Mercyhurst. Whether it’s visual art, theatre, dance, music or film, there are opportunities for first-timers and seasoned veterans to engage with the arts in nearly every discipline. On-campus venues include the magnificent 824-seat Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center, the intimate Taylor Little Theatre and Walker Recital Hall—all home to student-produced theatre, music, dance and opera performances. To augment the intense curricula of our performance arts programs, Mercyhurst frequently hosts residencies and master classes with renowned guests such as Emanuel Ax, Chita Rivera and Elizabeth Ashley. The Mercyhurst Institute for Arts & Culture organizes on-campus programming featuring world-class touring acts and visiting artists, and will welcome eight celebrated performers to Mercyhurst for the 2017-18 MIAC Live season (free student tickets, anyone?).

FEEL THE LAKE EFFECT Mercyhurst enjoys a close relationship with Erie, Pennsylvania, a place with small-town personality and big-city opportunities. Erie’s biggest and most beautiful attraction is the 13-mile sandy shoreline along Presque Isle State Park—voted the Best Freshwater Beach in the Nation by USA Today—perfect for swimming, biking, kayaking or just relaxing in the sun. There’s plenty to do in the surrounding Erie area, too: visit the Erie Zoo or the region’s museums, take in a show at the Erie Playhouse or Warner Theatre, dine at one of Erie’s first-rate restaurants, shop the latest trends at the Millcreek Mall, cheer on the local minor league teams, or hit the slopes at nearby ski resorts. It’s no wonder Erie was named one of USA Today’s 25 Best Small College Towns. Erie’s vibrant spirit and abundance of culture will enrich your college experience—especially with city buses and the campus shuttle transporting you to almost anywhere in town for free!
