The Outside Within — THE ATELIER COLLECTION —

As elements clash, surfaces crack, and organic forms emerge, we reflect upon the subtle and grand gestures that nature creates.

The Outside Within — THE ATELIER COLLECTION —

The first art is nature. Using natural materials not only connects us to this original art, but also means that every piece is alive in the vitality of its yarns. Animated by light and shadow, each piece is an impression of a moment, made up of the irreplicable interactions between space, time, and self.

Through layered fibers that protrude and recede, we explore the history of where the land and art meet and seek to bridge the worlds outside and within.

Each of our skills as craftsmen, artists, and designers are woven together to create these one-of-a-kind works of living art. We draw our inspiration from the art and culture that link us to the long and rich history of textiles and art, allowing us to continue the ancient conversation in a contemporary way. Each expressive piece beckons participation and requires your experience to be complete.

Connecting people through space, process, and experience, these pieces are dynamic settings for conversation, and each work evolves as you do, echoing the voice of each interaction.

In a way, it’s like a constant meditation on your relationship with nature, being in and outside of it. It grounds you, it humbles you; because nature is the great, big, powerful thing.

Every moment you look out the window, you will see something different from second to second. There is always going to be this transience, but there is also going to be this energy constantly flowing from inside of you to outside of you, and outside of you to inside of you. It’s a conversation between your energy and nature’s. It’s all energy.

Even more challenging than refining our craft has been building a culture that nurtures discovery, curiosity, vulnerability, and openness. It is only when we are willing to take big risks and put a large part of ourselves in our work that the real art emerges. The art that moves people and creates an emotional experience. Creating this environment has required courage, discipline, and determination from everyone at Merida.

The primary setting for this photoshoot is the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), a lively museum and artists’ residency in the Berkshire mountains of western Massachusetts. Built in he history of MASS MoCA’s site spans centuries of social, economic, industrial, and architectural change, with the museum’s complex of 19th-century textile factory buildings serving as a microcosm of the industrialization and post-industrialization of New England and beyond.

Originally conceived as an institution for the static long-term display of contemporary visual art, MASS MoCA has evolved into a center that presents both changing exhibitions and performing arts events, seeking to nurture the creation of new works that chart fresh creative territory. Many of the works shown in the museum’s numerous galleries, stages, and courtyards are made on-site during extended fabrication and rehearsal residencies that bring hundreds of the world’s most innovative artists to North Adams.

Merida gives a special thanks the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art for their ongoing contributions to the art community as well as for their participation in presenting our latest collection. massmoca.org
