BLISS BRIDAL

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE BRIDAL BUSINESS?

stores and with that offer customizations in addition to basic tailoring. We also have a gift shop in each location featuring gifts for the bride, customizable Mrs. jackets and event attire for showers, rehearsal dinners and bachelorette parties.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE ANY SPECIAL ACCESSORIES OR COMPLEMENTARY ITEMS BRIDES CAN FIND TO COMPLETE THEIR BRIDAL ENSEMBLE AT BLISS?

We carry and extensive selection of veils, belts, jackets, gloves, jewelry- everything that will give a bride that finishing touch. We can also help a bride who may have her gown already complete her lookthey can always book an appointment to bring their gown in to accessorize with us.

HOW DO YOU STAY ABREAST OF EMERGING BRIDAL FASHION DESIGNERS AND INTEGRATE THEIR WORK INTO YOUR BOUTIQUE'S SELECTION?

I opened my store in Fairhope, AL after the experience of shopping for a gown. I found that the options in my area at the time were either a high-end, luxury boutique or a lower-price, self help store. I decided it didn’t have to be one or the other. Brides deserved to love their experience, be proud of where they said yes and still get an affordable quality gown.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS?

14 years as of Valentine’s Day 2025

CAN YOU HIGHLIGHT SOME EXCLUSIVE DESIGNER LABELS OR UNIQUE COLLECTIONS AVAILABLE ONLY AT BLISS BRIDAL? We carry Justin Alexander and are one of their carefully selected Diamond Partners. We work closely with the brand to ensure our brides are first in line for new releases as well as delivery dates for their gown. In addition, we carry a Diamond collection available only at Diamond Partner boutiques.

HOW DO YOU CATER TO VARIOUS BUDGETS WHILE MAINTAINING THE LUXURIOUS AND UPSCALE FEEL OF THE BOUTIQUE? What makes Bliss feel like such a luxury is our kindness, warmth and genuine care for helping our bride find their perfect gown. These things aren’t expensive to deliver, there’s no extra cost to be nice to someone. I search to find stylists that feel a higher calling and true responsibility to do what we do.

DO YOU OFFER BRIDES ANY ADDITIONAL SERVICES OR PACKAGES, SUCH AS CUSTOM FITTINGS, ALTERATIONS, OR PERSONALIZED CONSULTATIONS?

We have in-house alterations in all of our with KATIE

Social media is such a powerful tool now. Where years ago designers collections, and new styling ideas weren’t as easy to access, in today’s world with Instagram and TikTok, a new concept can be found with a quick search or pops up naturally on my news feed. Of course I continue to attend markets and read the industry publication about what’s happening in bridal, but the wealth of ideas my stylists and I see on social media keeps our appointments fresh and on trend.

WHAT CONSIDERATIONS DO YOU TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN SELECTING A RANGE OF SIZES TO ENSURE INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY IN YOUR OFFERINGS? Our samples range from 6 to 26, and our designers size charts span 0-32. We make sure each silhouette and style is available to try on in a range of sizes.

HOW DO YOU ENSURE A SEAMLESS AND ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE FOR BRIDES, FROM THEIR INITIAL APPOINTMENT TO THE FINAL FITTING? Every step is about taking the pressure off the bride, and us carrying the load of worry. We walk them through every step, stay transparent with their process and make sure we check every task needed to walk them down the aisle- we literally have a checklist for every brides order to know that nothing was missed.

CAN YOU SHARE ANY UPCOMING EVENTS OR PROMOTIONS THAT BRIDES-TO-BE CAN LOOK FORWARD TO AT BLISS BRIDAL?

We will host our Anniversary event Feb 14th and 15th celebrating 14 Years of Bliss! All gowns and accessories will be 10% off for the celebration and we will have lots of vendors and special designers hosting trunk shows.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

Wes and I met during our freshman year of college at The University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). We had shared a class together.

TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL:

Wes and I made a timeline together that we wanted to get engaged/ married once we were twenty-five. On my 25th birthday, Wes proposed to me. I always wanted a private proposal, so we went on a walk down to a lake, and he asked me there. Afterwards, mine and his family surprised us with an engagement party. Then, he surprised me with a weekend in Gatlinburg to celebrate.

DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING DRESS:

My wedding dress had a fitted silhouette and a scalloped lace train extended beyond the lining. It featured removable tulle and lace ructhed sleeves which matched the top portion of the dress. It had a plunge neckline with a sheer bodice with exposed boning.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT FROM THE BIG DAY?

Our favorite moment was our first look. We had not seen each other since rehearsal dinner the night before, and we both had a lot of nerves. Whenever we both saw each other, we immediately started bawling. It was a mix of relief,

nervousness, and excitement and we are both so glad neither of us held back and that we decided to do a first look before the ceremony.

FAVORITE WEDDING DETAILS:

Our favorite wedding details was how we incorporated our cats into our reception. We included them in our bar sign by making custom drinks named after them, along with watercolor pictures of them. We also featured them on our koozies and on the groom cake. In addition to this, I also loved how my bridesmaids dresses turned out. Every bridesmaid had on the same color, but different fabrics and textures. My maid of honor, however, had a completely different floral dress that tied everything together perfectly.

WHERE DID YOU GO ON YOUR HONEYMOON?

For our honeymoon, we went to Cap Cana, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. We stayed at Sanctuary Cap Cana which we could not recommend enough. We had a private dinner on the beach, a guided snorkel boat tour, and so many more amazing things.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE NOW AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Now we are living in Meridian, Mississippi in our first home enjoying married life and being closer to our friends and families.

HOW DID YOU TWO MEET?

We met at a birthday party in college! Our friend groups ran in the same circles, but we didn't meet until the beginning of our junior year. We instantly hit it off and began dating a month or so later. We have been together (and inseparable) ever since!

TELL US ABOUT THE PROPOSAL.

From the beginning, I told Drew that I didn't want anything too elaborate. Just something that was meaningful and special for just the two of us to enjoy. He did just that! He lied and told me that he was having to water his grandmother's plants for her while she was away on vacation and that we needed to stop by before his birthday dinner (yes - he proposed on his own birthday) and water the plants. He asked me to help and took me into the backyard where he had set up a very intimate, romantic spot with candles, rose petals, and a book that he created that showcased our relationship up until that point. He got on one knee and I said yes!

DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING DRESS.

Before I went shopping for my dress, I saw another bride wearing almost the exact dress that I ended up buying and thinking "wow, I love that neckline." I just remember seeing her picture and loving how timeless and classy she looked - which is exactly the vibe I wanted to try and achieve for my own wedding. As soon as I saw the dress hanging in the store, I had a feeling it would be the winner. And it was an immediate yes - and I'm a pretty indecisive person. The dress feels very elegant and so unique - with the high neckline and deep cut to the pleating on the ballgown. I loved everything about my dress!

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT FROM THE BIG DAY

I think my favorite thing(s) about my wedding are all of the little,

insignificant memories that were made throughout the day. Someone gave me the advice to take time for myself and not feel rushed or overwhelmed and I think doing that helped create some of my favorite memories to look back on.

I just remember being with family and friends while getting ready and spending time with just Drew minutes before the ceremony. I would also say our trolley ride to our reception is something I will also never forget. Being with all of our best friends right after our ceremony was just the best feeling because of all of the energy and love that we felt in those moments.

DESCRIBE THE WEDDING CAKE AND THE GROOM’S CAKE?

For our wedding cake, I wanted to go with something very classic! It was a wedding cake flavored with blue and white icing to match our overall color scheme. The groom cake wasn't a traditional groom cake - we decided to go with a king cake because our wedding fell the Saturday before Mardis Gras! We couldn't think of anything to do for his groom's cake, so we thought that would be something fun and unique!

WHERE DID YOU GO ON YOUR HONEYMOON?

We went to the Maldives on our honeymoon and had the most magical time! We went to the spa, ate a ton of great foods, snorkeled, and just relaxed.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE NOW AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

We now live in Birmingham, AL! Drew is from Birmingham, so we both moved in 2022 after we graduated college. I am a Marketing Coordinator for a Southeastern based law firm (Burr & Forman) and Drew is a Project Management Specialist for Mercedes-Benz U.S. International.

The BEST way, to enjoy THE BIG DAY! - Hire a Wedding

Planner!

General Manager-Supertalk Meridian, with professional consulting by An- Howard Hill, Uptown Event Co.

Once you get engaged, brides get straight to work planning their dream wedding. A lot of details go into planning a wedding that often get overlooked or create extra stress. Many brides think that they can do all of the planning for their wedding, but many brides realize the value of having someone to handle all of the wedding planning details. An Howard Hill, owner of Uptown Event Co., explains the wedding planning process.

The Wedding Plan Consultation

When you first meet with your wedding planner, you need to share your vision of your special day and your budget. Your wedding planner will then make recommendations that fit into your budget. The wedding planner will make appointments with recommended vendors and venues.

Start the Planning Process – Selecting a Venues and Vendors

The planner then handles all the logistics of the contracts, payments and creative design when needed alongside the bride every step of the way. Contract negotiation is also a part of the wedding planner's services. A large part of "the details" is designing a vision for setup, florals, and over all vibe of the

event. All the while mapping out a detailed plan to ensure wedding day runs smoothly.

The Details

After the venues have been confirmed, the wedding planner starts working on all of the details to make the bride’s dream come to life. The wedding planner creates a layout of the venues and consults with the bride about food and beverage options, music, seating, décor, photography, hotel accommodations, transportation, guest count management, wedding party attire, florals and so much more. A large part of "the details" is designing a vision for setup, florals, and over all vibe of the event. All the while mapping out a detailed plan to ensure wedding day runs smoothly.

Time Management

The wedding planner creates a timeline for the wedding weekend, to inform everyone when and where they are going to be and holds all parties accountable.

Jean’s brings fun to wedding fare

It takes a small army to organize the perfect wedding, and all armies, large and small, need to eat. Jean’s Restaurant in downtown Meridian offers to take care of just that with its catering and venue services.

Elic Purvis, owner and operator of Jean’s restaurant, said the restaurant focuses mostly on hosting rehearsal dinners at its 22nd Avenue location but also offers a wide variety of catering options, including custom menus to meet the tastes and budgets of the brides to be. From buffet style chicken to individual plates of steak and lobster, menus are crafted to be unique for each event.

“We have people that want fried chicken, but most of them don’t for an event like that,” he said. “So we mostly focus really on curating our clients’ menus with our clients to make sure that no two events are exactly the same.”

bringing a few bites of home to the table can help make a good impression right from the start.

One example, Purvis said, is a wedding several years ago where the groom’s family was from Iowa. Paying homage to his Midwest roots, the menu included morel canapés, highlighting Iowa native morel mushrooms, and a dish including Maytag Blue Cheese, the state blue cheese.

The food served at a wedding can also reflect the roots of the bride’s and groom’s families, their background or where they grew up. With family on both sides coming to town for the event,

“We really like when our clients have an idea of what they want to serve their guests, so that way we can have fun with it on our end too,” he said.

Jean’s also works closely with other local catering businesses such as Pretty Presentations and Carolyn’s Creations, Purvis said. The companies work together and pooling resources when needed to make sure a wedding or other special day goes smoothly.

For soon-to-be brides, the task of planning a wedding can seem insurmountable, but things will come together quickly once the process gets started. The most important things, Purvis said, are setting a budget and making a list of who is doing what.

Photos courtesy of Elic Purvis

"You’re going to be working with a lot of different people trying to tell you what to do and how to do your big day and all these kinds of things, which is great,” he said. “But the key things that you need to remember are, ‘How much money am I going to be able to spend on this,’ and ‘Who is doing what for me.’

“Whether it’s the priest, whether it’s the caterer, whether it’s the hairdresser that’s doing your hair and makeup the day of, all of those things need to be put into play pretty soon because, in our industry, things book up very quickly and very heavily.”

When budgeting, the two most expensive items for weddings are typically the venue for the reception and the wedding dress, Purvis said, with costs for catering often included in the venue cost. Knowing an hourly rental rate for the venue will then allow brides to figure out a range for catering. Budgeting per person for rehearsals isn’t much of a problem, he said, but it’s harder to give a head count for receptions.

“Coming up with a ballpark, rounded figure makes more sense for a reception than it does for a rehearsal dinner,” he said.

When lining up services, starting early is key, especially for those looking to have a spring wedding, which is the busy season. For catering from Jean’s, Purvis said, getting on the schedule six months to a year out is a good way to go. At the same time, he said, rushing into a wedding isn’t ideal either. It’s worth taking the time to make it the perfect day.

One way to make things easier is to hire an event planner to help with coordinating the numerous services, industries and professionals

…We mostly focus really on curating our clients’ menus with our clients to make sure that no two events are exactly the same.

involved in putting together the perfect wedding. Purvis said event planners are well worth the investment.

“Then from there, it’s just picking out what you’re going to wear,” he said.

For brides-to-be, Meridian is a great place to be planning a wedding. The Queen City offers an abundance of scenic, historic and intimate venues, skilled caterers and florists and planners to help put all the pieces together to bring the dream wedding to life.

“We have a great resource in Meridian as far as events go,” he said. “I mean, we’ve got great venues in town, we’ve got fantastic florists, and it’s really not hard to book your picture perfect wedding in Meridian so long as you’re making the right calls and you’re calling on the right people to help you with certain things.”

Whether it's for a local bride or a destination wedding, Meridian is the place to be.

Whether it’s a lavish, black-tie affair or a laid back gathering in the backyard, a couple’s wedding day is a momentous, and often costly, occasion. According to the online wedding planning resource Zola, the average cost of a wedding in 2023 was $33,000. That’s a significant sum for couples to spend, and it’s understandable if couples aren’t sure how to allocate funds for their big day. It’s important that couples recognize what’s most important to them when planning their weddings. Recognition of those priorities can help couples determine how to allocate their funds. Equally helpful can be how past couples have spent on their weddings. Utilizing data from its The Knot 2023 Real Weddings Study, the wedding experts at The Knot (theknot.com) have calculated general percentages of a wedding budget couples can devote to various components.

• Venue: 37%

• Catering: 28%

• Band: 12%

• Wedding rings: 9%

• Photography: 8%

• Flowers: 8%

• Alcohol: 8%

• Rehearsal dinner: 8%

• Videography: 7%

• Couples’ attire: 7%

• Rentals: 6%

• DJ: 5%

• Wedding party attire: 4%

• Guest entertainment: 3%

• Transportation: 3%

• Ceremony music: 3%

• Cake and desserts: 2%

• Stationery: 2%

• Officiant: 1%

• Favors and gifts: 1%

• Additional jewelry: 1%

Couples with a keen eye might notice these percentages add up to significantly more than 100 percent. That’s because the budgetary breakdown reflects personal preferences, individual couples’ budgets and what couples can expect to spend on certain components. For example, The Knot data indicates a couple that prefers a band for their reception instead of a DJ may need to allocate roughly twice as much of their budget to accommodate that preference. In addition, couples who do not intend to pay for wedding party members’ attire can find other ways to allocate those funds, which The Knot data indicates typically accounts for roughly 4 percent of a wedding budget.

Another variable to consider is family. According to The Knot data, couples allocated an average of 8 percent of their budgets to their rehearsal dinner. However, couples’ parents may offer to pay for that meal, which can leave more room in the budget for other expenses. In addition, The Knot reported that the percentage of couples asking a friend or family member to serve as their wedding officiant

rose from 37 percent in 2015 to 51 percent in 2020. Wedding officiants do not often eat up a significant portion of a couple’s wedding budget (1 percent), but this is another expense that modern couples may not need to account for.

Weddings can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Couples who determine how best to allocate their wedding budgets may find it far simpler to plan their big day.

WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF WEDDING ADVICE YOU GIVE TO EVERY COUPLE, NO MATTER WHAT KIND OF WEDDING THEY’RE PLANNING?

My advice to every couple, no matter what kind of wedding they are planning, focus on what truly matters to them as a couple. It’s so easy to get caught up in trends, expectations, and opinions, but your wedding should reflect your wishes, traditions, and values. Prioritize the aspects that matter the most – whether it’s the venue, food, music or location. Stay true to what makes you both happy. In the end, the moments and memories you create together will be far more important than the little details.
