This project brief is about the design of a public pool along Brisbane’s North Quay riverbank. Due to the location of the site, this project challenges the composition between the overlay of dominant vehicular infrastructure from the expressway and the topographical level change on the site along the Brisbane river. This creates problems such as a low-lit space and isolation. However, it has the potential for developments as it is in Brisbane’s CBD. Thus, designing a public pool may be challenging but it offers many social benefits especially for the locals. This pool will consist of a 8 lanes of 50m x 2.5m main pool, warm-down pool, staff rooms, changing rooms, a cafe, lift and ramps. Furthermore, it will have to accommodate the Centenary Bikeway, which is the principal cycling route into Brisbane’s CBD. My design concept comprises of the differences in the degree of transparency and styles of layering through the selections of materials and structure. This shows the spatial differences, the light qualities and whether the functions of each space are concealed or revealed but as a whole, the building elements blend into the one and remove all those interruptions from the differences. To accommodate the Centenary Bikeway and pedestrian walkway, this project introduces the use of organic “tube-like” design and bright colours to differentiate the different circulation paths. This design also helps to attract people from the main road to the pool and it complements the curves of the expressway.

August - November 2016 History and Memory; Based on Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House.

The idea was to engage the architectural canons derived from Lloyd especially the ornament from Hollyhock House; Symmetrical elements that placed into asymmetrical form, layering elements to differentiate the spatial qualities and unified through the endless line works. The Underground museum has spaces such as cafĂŠ, shop, exhibition spaces, office etc. Those spaces are split to three different levels based on their spatial qualities, whereby the ground level is where most of the public spaces are, the basement 1 is the private spaces, such as the toilet and office, followed by the lowest level, which is the exhibition space. Through these spaces, it is unified by the roof form and the central stairs, which is the main circulation. The roof form is highlighted through the planning of the layout and the indents on the floor. The space within the stairs are defined by the central lightwell and the sudden protrusion of landing to allow the visitors to glance through the exhibition space before leaving. Furthermore, to emphasize on the infiniteness from my phases, the line works of the roof form are extruding all the way through the site. It creates an indent on the floor, that is lit during the night. The museum is made of glass, concrete and insulated tensioned membrane with steel structure to complement its aesthetics and spatial experiences. Be it in museum or outside of the whole form, the architectural canons can be seen throughout.

Aboriginal culture; Located at 65 Station Road, Logan city

This project focuses on providing a holistic cultural maternity care centre for the Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders. It is in the city, that has a rich history of Indigenous Australia. Hence, this maternity care centre is structured around cultural and social practices of the Indigenous. This will include a range of rooms and spatial types such as big waiting area for the families, birthing suites, maternity rooms, consulting rooms, counseling rooms, staff offices, cafe, shops and carpark. My concept is the use of big internal courtyards to allow natural lighting and greenery for the mums, the use of distinct volumes in the form to indicate the different spatial experiences and the bright colours used in the aluminum facade panels as a cultural representation. The centre has two entrances, which are relatively lower in ceiling height as compared to the main courtyard. The main courtyard is not only for natural lighting, it represents a landmark for families and mums to circulate around the centre. The basement one is the carpark, whereby we were required to follow the dimensions from the Australian Standard. As for the ground level, the cafe, shops, reception and rooms for pre/post-natal are located, followed by the second level, where the waiting room for the mums’ families, birthing suites, maternity rooms, staff offices are located. Due to privacy purposes for the second level, hanging plants were placed along the corridors. The waiting rooms have an internal courtyard for the mums and families with cooking amenities and it outlooks to the city of Logan.

Urban transformation of the old city of Seoul; Located in Gwangjang Market, Seoul

Gwangjang marktet is the oldest market in Seoul that specialises in Hanbok (traditional Korean dress), silk, fabric and Korean street food. The market is divided into three stories; first story accommodates clothing, bedding, fabrics, silks and food, second story is dominated by Hanbok shops, and third story operates as offices. In this project, we had to analysis the aerial views of the Gwangjang market and its surroundings between 1970s and present and note down the changes, then we had to do site analysis to account the problems faced by the merchants and provide solutions to improve on the market. Some of problems that were surfaced were lack of crowd on the second level due to the inaccessibility and isolation, and there were not proper amenities and facilities for the merchants even though they spent many hours in a day in the market. Therefore, my concept is to improve on the circulation to the second level and improve on the ammenities and facilities for the merchants. These were explained through a series of photo collages. I changed the roof system to a series of traditional pattern aluminum panels to allow more ventilation and natural lighting into the market. To increase accessibility into the second and third levels, I included a stairway and footpaths in between the rows of shops, and changed the wall to a window wall system. At the third level, I designed living units with amenities for the merchants to improve their lifestyle.
