This project was produced in the Winter 2009 class of Arch 413: Special Projects in Photography at the University of Washington, under the tutelage of John Stamets. I would like to thank John, whose knowledge and encouragement allowed for the creation of this book and the photographs within it. And as always, thank you to my friends and family, who show no limit to their support.

introduction Though ubiquitous in the landscape of the Pacific Northwest, these gems are often overlooked as mere additions to parking lots and gas stations. For this reason I set out to document their humble presence among our consumer culture. I dedicated the investigation to Snohomish County as it is an area often overshadowed by its southern neighbor, offering an alternative perspective to Seattle’s coffee culture. The project has just begun and I look forward to documenting more coffee stands of Snohomish County and the greater Pacific Northwest.

Scattered throughout the Pacific Northwest, drive-thru coffee stands colorfully illustrate the crossing of coffee and car culture unique to the region. From shacks to elaborately creative structures, the number of independently owned coffee stands that fill the landscape is rather remarkable, even more so the patronage they receive given the additional amount of coffee shops owned by large franchises such as Starbucks, Tully’s, Café Vita, etc. Stranger still are the bikini baristas, a recent phenomenon offering bared skin with your coffee.
