Of Gods & Men [15A]
Mon 4 Apr @ 8pm
French director Xavier Beauvois’ stunningly passionate and deeply moving film is based in a Cistercian monastery in Algeria and focuses on a spartan order devoted to contemplation and prayer. Their community has developed a happy relationship with the local Muslim villagers, based partly on the free outpatient clinic they provide. They have a quiet, supportive respect for each other’s traditions. But dark forces are gathering: intolerant jihadist forces have already murdered Croatian construction workers, and are rumoured to have the Catholic monks in their sights as the ultimate prize. The monks must now decide - should they stay or should they go? Is going cowardice? Is staying arrogance? Is martyrdom their destiny? Dir: Xavier Beauvois 2009 €8/€6.50 Conc.

But when the loan goes bad is there anything to stop the infamous Shylock from claiming his ‘pound of flesh’? Get a great insight into The Merchant of Venice - a classic Shakespearean tale of love and hate with a moral all too familiar – ‘all that glistens is not gold’. e15/e12 Conc.

Black Swan [16]
Mon 18 & Sat 23 Apr @ 8pm
Two chances to catch this Oscar winning performance by Natalie Portman. Black Swan quietly follows a ballerina called Nina as she trains for the main part in the infamous ballet piece, Swan Lake. As a prima ballerina, you play both the White Swan, who has to dance with precision, perfection and innocence - and the Black Swan, who is wild, free and unpredictable. Her training is complicated by obsessive mother Erica and her competition, a new dancer Lily. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side she uncovers a recklessness that threatens to destroy her. Vladimir & Classical Twist
Wed 20 Apr @ 8pm
Vladimir Jablokov arrived in Ireland from Slovakia in 2004 with a sleeping bag and a fishing rod. When finding work proved difficult he began busking on Grafton Street, where he was to meet his future wife. By twist and turn and no little skill he worked his way from street musician to performing at some of Ireland’s most prestigious venues including Cork Opera House, Aras an Uachtarain and The National Concert Hall, where he received a 15-minute standing ovation while performing with Irish soprano Celine Byrne. Currently his main musical focus is his five piece ensemble that plays a hybrid of classics, jazz and pop he likes to call ‘Classical Twist’. From Bach to Bowie, and from Mozart to Johnny Mercer, they put a fresh, contemporary spin on some of the greatest melodies ever written. €18/€16 Conc.

Blue Valentine [16]
Mon 25 Apr @ 8pm
A heartbreaking and unsentimental relationship drama, Blue Valentine annihilates the myth of cinematic love. In depicting the crumbling marriage of Dean and Cindy, director Derek Cianfrance flatly rejects the redemptive qualities of romance, and delves unsparingly into the reality of two lives that are slowly and painfully ossifying. But that isn’t the whole story, because this painful break-up is contrasted in beautifully assembled cross-cuts with the early days of the relationship. It’s a rare balancing act that Cianfrance has pulled off, with moments of utter joy brutally offset by a vivid sense of anger and betrayal. Dir: Derek Cianfrance €8/€6.50 Conc.

Biutiful [15]
Mon 9 May @ 8pm
Javier Bardem’s searing performance gives an intimate and haunting character study of a man in free fall. Biutiful is rooted to Barcelona and its less picturesque suburbs where doomed hero, Uxbal, is struggling to cope with two children and the knowledge that he’s soon to succumb to cancer. Desperate to leave his children and errant bipolar ex-wife with means, the increasingly stooped protagonist’s frantic wheeling and dealing inadvertently leads to a terrible tragedy. It’s a stunning, bravura performance; even in death Bardem has enough intensity to carry the picture. Dir: Alejandro González Iñárritu 2010. CLUB Norwegian Wood
mon 6 jun @ 8pm
Tran Ann Hung’s breathtaking adaptation of the bestselling Haruki Murakami novel Norwegian Wood is likely to stand as one of the most elegant and moving love stories of the year. Told with the most delicate of touches it will not disappoint the countless devotees of the book or incurable romantics alike. The tale unfolds in late 1960s Tokyo where rebellion is in the air and student Watanabe (Ken’ichi Matsuyama) is drawn to Naoko (Rinko Kikuchi). The intimacy between them is tinged by a profound sadness over a shared tragedy in their past and is threatened when Watanabe meets the beguiling, flirtatious Midori (Kiko Mizuhara). Torn between two women, he is caught between the ties of the past and the promise of the future.Dir: Tran Anh Hung 2010 €8/€6.50 Conc.

Rabbit Hole (15A)
mon 13 jun @ 8pm
Grief may be the topic under examination, but humour - incisive, observant and warm - is the tool with which it’s dissected in Rabbit Hole, a refreshingly positive-minded take on cinema’s ultimate downer: overcoming the death of a child. Eight months have passed since the accidental death of the Corbetts’ 4-year-old son, Danny, and the New York couple, Howie (Aaron Eckhart) and Becca (Nicole Kidman), still feel their lives dominated by the loss. Each has a different way of coping: Howie holds on to all that reminds him of Danny, while Becca wants to sell the house and move on. Just as the birth of a child can strengthen certain unstable relationships, a death threatens to permanently come between even the best-matched couple. Dir: John Cameron Mitchell 2010 e8/€6.50 Conc.

West is West (15A)
mon 20 & fri 24 jun @ 8pm
So good we’re screening it twice! East is East, writer Ayub Khan-Din’s semiautobiographical story of a mixed-race family in Salford in the early 70s won a BAFTA for Outstanding British Film. West is West takes up the story eight years on with youngest son Sajid the resident teenager in trouble. He’s playing truant to avoid the bullies at school and aggravating his father with his Anglicised ways. George decides that a trip to Pakistan will sort Sajid out and, in no time at all, father and son are on their route back. Though broadly played for laughs, the film, like its prequel, strikes some serious notes and the relationship between the two wives is tinged with poignancy. In the end lessons are learnt and harmony restored, albeit not quite in the way George had envisaged. Dir: Andy De Emmony 2009 €8/€6.50 Conc. Duration: 102mins

‘Ireland, says Bloom, I was born here. Ireland’
What is your country? Is being Irish easy to define? Is being Irish saying what one is not? Has national identity become purely administrator? Has reality finally won out over imagined Ireland? This summer Kerry-born London-based artist Denis Buckley will carry out a four-week investigation into perceptions of national identity. Denis will install a confessional booth in the Mermaid gallery and will be present around the town of Bray welcoming everyone into his exploration and discussion by asking them to share their experience of belonging. Throughout he will be filming and editing an original work shown to mark the engagement. To begin the process he asks:
What is your country? If you have any thoughts, ideas or stories relating to this question, please email the artist in confidence on denis@mermaidartscentre.ie or drop into Mermaid gallery.

The Good Hatchery (Carl Giffney + Ruth E. Lyons)
Lodestar is a collaborative work by The Good Hatchery artists Carl Giffney and Ruth E. Lyons. Inspired by maritime infrastructure and the landscape of industrial boglands that surround their studios in Co. Offaly, the artists have created a sculptural & video installation specifically for the gallery in Mermaid Arts Centre. Lodestar is an investigation into the magnetism of light, youth culture, Kish lighthouse, destiny and what the artists describe as the ultra-ordinary. The Good Hatchery is an experimental project based in rural Offaly and is run by both artists where they manage a curatorial programme of residencies, on site projects and exhibitions and have permanent studio space. Between Mon 21 March and Thu 31 March the gallery will be open to the public for The Good Hatchery’s installation of Lodestar. All are welcome to view the process of the exhibition installation and talk with the artists. After Dark Thu 12 May- Thu 16 Jun Caoimhe Kilfeather & Mark Swords This two-person exhibition brings together two divergent yet acclaimed practices. The pairing of Caoimhe Kilfeather and Mark Swords juxtaposes two different forms of object making, sculpture and two-dimensional works, where crossover territories may be found in a shared intrigue in materials, in an engagement with labour, construction and fabrication and in a pared back aesthetic that retains a tangible edge – what Caoimhe Kilfeather calls ‘a correlative sense of touch’ It is perhaps possible that within the pairing of two distinct practices and in the close proximity of their work within the gallery structure, that something unexpected and might unfold. Mark Swords graduated with an MA from NCAD in 2003. Swords is the resent winner of 2010 AIB Prize. He currently lives and works in County Wicklow. Caoimhe Kilfeather studied at NCAD (BA) and the Slade School of Fine Art, London (MA). Currently artist-in-residence at the Fire Station Artists Studios, Dublin and recipient of the 2011 Fred Conlon Award. Image courtesy of the artist Caoimhe Kilfeather

Take a bow! The arts really matter to us in Ireland; they are a big part of people’s lives, the country’s single most popular pursuit. Our artists interpret our past, define who we are today, and imagine our future. We can all take pride in the enormous reputation our artists have earned around the world. The arts play a vital role in our economy, and smart investment of taxpayers’ money in the arts is repaid many times over. The dividends come in the form of a high value, creative economy driven by a flexible, educated, innovative work force, and in a cultural tourism industry worth a2.4 billion directly a year. The Arts Council is the Irish Government agency for funding and developing the arts. Arts Council funding from the taxpayer, through the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport, for 2011 is a65.2 million, that’s around 80 cents a week for every household. So, at the end of your next inspirational encounter with the arts, don’t forget the role you played and take a bow yourself! Find out what’s on at
