WELCOME
As we enter 2016 we in Mermaid have struggled a little thinking about how, as a cultural centre, we will approach this important commemorative year. The act of commemoration raises complex issues mainly because people’s memories, particularly of conflict, are shaped according to their political, social and cultural outlook. Therefore it’s hard to include all voices and viewpoints, all sides and outlooks of such an important part of our history. When we learn about history it’s learned as a set narrative, a process that reinforces the mistaken idea that the past can be distilled into a single, standardised collective story. This is almost like saying everyone remembers events the same way. However we all know history is anything but agreeable and it’s most definitely not a collection of set facts but more a collection of society’s and historians’ conflicting opinions and analysis. In Mermaid we believe in remembering our past and learning from it.We know our past is completely interconnected with our present and understand in order to progress it really should influence our future. What 2016 means to us, and how we have approached our programme, is to consider the diversity of opinions but particularly focus on the people that have made and still continue to make Ireland what it is today. We believe we should be proud of who we are and where we come from while at all times embracing the diversity of our past, present and future. We are people. We are a community. We are citizens and it is our differences that make us strong. Niamh O’Donnell (Artistic Director) & the Mermaid team

MADE IN MERMAID Made in Mermaid is an initiative where we support artists in the creation of work and in 2016 we’re focusing on new writing and are proud to announce three new theatre writers’ commissions.
Shaun Dunne, a co-commission with Rough Magic Theatre Company. Shaun is writing a new piece called The Visibility Exercise, about a young woman who is working as a nurse in an abortion clinic in London. Shaun is interested in exploring the complexities of activism and the weight that comes with blending the personal and the political. He wants to look at the difficulties of representing critical issues in a public forum- and the strain it can cause on both the advocate and the people around them.
Kate Heffernan, a co-commission with Laois County
Council. Kate’s new piece Montague is about the hotel where Kate’s parents celebrated their wedding reception. It was connected to the IRA abduction of Tiede Herrema, was a popular spot on the Country and Irish touring circuit, and is now a Direct Provision Centre. Kate is less interested in telling these real stories than in taking a sideways glance at this layered history, to see what might emerge from the clash between the past and present.
Philip St John, a Wicklow writer who just presented
Temptress in Mermaid and The New Theatre, has been commissioned by Mermaid Arts Centre to write a new work. Philip’s new piece Carraigrock is a darkly comic epic that follows the adventurous life of a woman from a big house between the 1840s and 1920s.The play depicts the price she pays for her attempts to cast off the shackles of class, gender roles and family expectations.

MERMAID SPACE ///Artists’ residencies Our residency programme, Mermaid Space, is where we offer as many supports as possible to artists to help them make work in Wicklow. This is a way for us to keep artists at our core, because keeping them at our centre, at our heart, helps keep us as a space relevant. Our Dance Artists in residence, Nick Bryson, Karen Gleeson and Aisling O’Coineen have started their 8 month residency and will present three exciting and thoughtful dance works in an evening called Shared Remedies as part of the First Fortnight Festival (a festival set up to challenge Mental Health Stigma through the creative arts) with guest dance artists Rebecca Warner, Áine Stapleton and Damian Punch (see page 17). Matthew Ralli and Philip St John will work for a week in Mermaid in early January on the development of a new work (see Made in Mermaid page 5) called Carraigrock and in January (and also in March) we will also have dance artist Sibeal Davitt work in residence in Mermaid in a first time residency collaboration with the Dublin Dance Festival. The festival have been awarded a Witness History Public Art Commission called EMBODIED and Sibeal is one of six dance artists who will make a ‘dance proclamation’ to be presented in the GPO in 2016.
6
Sound artist Sven Anderson will be in residence in Bray (funded by a Strategic Projects Award from Wicklow County Council). Sven will work in an old shop in Bray for two months where he’ll initiate a daily working routine that involves local outreach, community listening and recording activities, discussions, writing and many other things based on meetings both planned and accidental with local people, schools and communities. Sven’s goal is to promote an awareness of the relevance of sound and soundscape to our sense of place. Keep an eye on our website and emails to see what Sven is doing! And finally Lian Bell and Mermaid have selected 14 artists to support as part of Gap Day (funded by an Arts Council Theatre Development Award). This pilot project was an open submission; we’ve selected freelancers from around the country and bought them space and time for creative thinking on new work. Through this programme we are trying to give a meaningful offer of care for an artist’s creative well-being ; we hope to present some of their ideas and work in development in our summer season.

MERMAID GALLERY Works by Nature and Man Dominic Stevens Architect Dominic Stevens looks at the landscape of Wicklow which is agricultural on the one hand and picturesque on the other. There are almost no landscapes in Europe that are purely natural, all are the result of a relationship between the land and the people, their daily labours, rituals and beliefs.Wicklow is no exception.Wicklow is a creation of the ideas and the industry of man. Working through video and installation and looking at theories concerning cultural landscapes, the sublime and picturesque, Dominic presents attitudes and ideas gleaned from his research with rural communities in Wicklow. Funded by Wicklow County Arts Office as a Strategic Project Initiative. The exhibition has also been supported by Apex Solutions, a Greystones family-run business specialising in renovations and insulation.
Exhibition runs until THU 28 January | 10am – 6pm FREE 11
MERMAID GALLERY There Are Little Kingdoms Adrian Duncan, Sabina MacMahon, Eamon O’Kane and Kathy Tynan curated by Emma Dwyer There Are Little Kingdoms features the work of four Irish artists – who each tell us their own story. From King James II enjoying a meal under a sycamore tree at the house of John Keyes and later burning everything in the area but that house, to the submerged forest of Bray beach, the logs from Finland which have turned our soil Scandinavian and the motivational wheelie bins of Dublin 8. Every tree, house, town and mountain has a story. Whether it’s the absurd, historical, fictional or anchored in unbelievable fact. Meaning can be slippy and a slight change in the way we look at something can completely change how we see it. What these four artists have in common is a sideways glance at the world and their place in it.
Opening THU 11 February at 6pm | Exhibition runs FRI 12 February – SAT 19 March | 10am – 6pm FREE 12
MERMAID GALLERY YOUR PHOTOS, YOUR MEMORIES, OUR HISTORY In partnership with the Gallery of Photography As part of Mermaid Arts Centre 1916 commemorative programme we will exhibit selected works from The Photo Album of Ireland. Our photo albums give an insight into our private and public histories. Photographs from family albums or private collections often reveal details about how people lived and worked, the architecture, fashion, customs and daily life that official records don’t always capture. As generations pass our knowledge about this valuable social history is often lost. This exhibition will present two Wicklow families photo albums as well as other family albums from around the country. The images exhibited will cover the period from the invention of photography in 1839 up until the advent of digital photography in the late 1980s early 1990s. We will have an open call to the people of Wicklow to come along on two days to have their albums scanned and added to the national archive.
Opening THU 31 March at 6pm | Exhibition runs FRI 1 April – SAT 14 May | 10am – 6pm FREE 13

But the Führer left the meeting earlier than planned, with the explosion detonating 13 minutes later.
