WELCOME At Mermaid Arts Centre we believe in the intrinsic value of art and its transformative effect on those who attend and particularly on those who participate. Cultural activities are collaborative and the bringing together of people to listen and reflect, to discuss and consider as well as to share, builds understanding and empathy and strengthens feelings of self-belief and togetherness. Each year Mermaid is proud to present a wide range of local arts. What we mean by local arts is the work of extremely talented and creative local people. Their work is multidisciplinary and hugely diverse, from groups teaching children and young people like; Bray Music Centre, Sheevawn Musical Youth Theatre, The Goode School of Dance, Junior Musicals Theatre School, Presentation College Bray and Loreto Secondary School Bray, Coláiste Chraobh Abhann, Action Arts, Bray School of Dance, Performers Theatre School Bray, to those training our future professional artists like the wonderful Bray Institute of Further Education drama, film and dance courses. We also support the work of groups who work in art therapy, building social cohesion like the incredible Bray Lakers. As well as the most spectacular amateur dramatic groups whose productions and commitment are spellbinding like Square One Theatre Group, Bray One Act, Bray Musical Society and Voices of Bray Community Choir. What all of these groups have in common (including the ones I haven’t mentioned – sorry) and why Mermaid is their natural home, is their belief in the importance of cultural activity and self-expression for everyone. All of the activities and events Mermaid presents are about shared experiences. When we share we build social bonds. People develop common and shared values which in turn leads to a stronger sense of community. All of these things cultivate the kind of citizens not just desired but needed for an inclusive pluralist society. A society and a community in which we are all proud to live. Join us on our shared journey. Niamh O’Donnell (Artistic Director) and the Mermaid team
MERMAID SPACE ///Artists’ residencies Our residency programme, Mermaid SPACE was established to ensure we as a centre are not just a space of presentation but also of creation. Residencies are divided into three types: research and development, creation, and production. We provide residencies for artists who respond to contemporary events and ideas. We are interested in artists whose approach to art questions ways of living. In the spring and summer of 2015, Mermaid will have nine artists in residence. Their work is issue based, social minded and provocative. It is important to us that you, as our audience, come to experience, listen and respond. Gemma Gallagher (Shadowbox Theatre) will be working for two weeks researching a new theatre work called Whistle-Blower. This project stems from an understanding of, and first-hand experience in, what it is to work in social care. Gemma wants to investigate the issues that arise when mounting pressures and changing motivations have a strong influence on social service providers and service provision. She aims to explore an instinctual response to a very particular collection of documentary footage concerned with the exposure of neglect and abuse within the social care sector and importantly, what that means to workers who are encouraged not to voice their concerns.
Nick Bryson, Karen Gleeson and Aisling O’Coineen will complete their year-long dance residency in Mermaid with a celebratory night of dance on Thursday 21 May called MESH (see pg 15). Do come to what will be an incredible selection of short solos and duets with a guest artist Celine Werkhoven (NL) joining us from the European dance network, Studiotrade. We have been honoured to have Aisling, Karen and Nick work with us for such an extended period of time. They have lifted our spirits and thrilled us and we hope to be able to raise the funds to have them back for another year. It is important for us to continue to support Wicklow dance artists to make and work in their own locality. You can help us support them by coming to see them perform! Gemma Collins, Grace Dyas and Lauren Larkin (THEATREclub) are working with us for two weeks in July on a piece called The Game. This piece looks at prostitution and the social issues arising from the sex trade. We have huge respect for these artists because their work gently challenges audience’s perceptions and beliefs. They do not lecture. They do not force any points of view or give definitive answers but they do insist we ask ourselves questions. They gently and sympathetically ask us to at least consider other points of view and positions. They may not fundamentally change your opinions but they will open your minds. Please come and see a work in progress and meet these wonderful artists on Saturday 18 July (see pg 38).

Her first solo exhibition at Mermaid Arts Centre, Imlíne will comprise of solid structured, richly coloured paintings in which she examines the language and process of painting. These visual statements hover between abstraction and representation. They vaguely represent or resemble landscape, various types of structures and natural phenomena. Thomas Hauert (sweet) (bitter) Thomas Hauert is a Brussels-based Swiss dancer and choreographer whose sophisticated, improvisation-based movement has a strong relation to music – either actual music or the musicality of movement itself. In this new solo, his dance interacts with the baroque song Si dolce è’l tormento. Hauert interprets this musical poem of impossible love as the expression of a conflict between the bliss of pursuing an ideal and the torment of knowing that this ideal will stay unreachable. A tension which is a universal motor of life. Watch this performance for free on Bray’s band stand. THU 28 May | 1.30pm & 4pm FREE | Band Stand, Bray Promenade

Ulysses – BloomsDay Lunch and Film In Ulysses, Joyce shows us how food is part of one’s daily life, future plans and fantasies. He tells us it not only reflects social class and individual temperament it also offers opportunities for interaction. During lunch, Bloom muses on the food choices of “crème de la crème”, contrasting them to “Hermit with a platter of pulse” and concludes that food, like dress, defines personality: “know me come eat with me” (chapter eight, Lestrygonians). So, if your own journey on the day will not carry you to a site where Bloomsday is being celebrated, consider replicating Bloom’s lunch here in Mermaid with Betelnut Café and dine on a delicious Gorgonzola cheese and mustard sandwich and a glass of burgundy in hand while watching a screening of Director’s Joseph Strick’s 1967 Ulysses. The film is an adaptation of Ulysses set in Dublin on June 16, 1904. Stephen Dedalus, who fancies himself as a poet, embarks on a day of wandering about the city during which he finds friendship and a father figure in Leopold Bloom, a middle-aged Jew. Meanwhile, Bloomsday, illuminated by a funeral and an evening of drinking and revelry that stirs paternal feelings toward Stephen, ends with a rapprochement with Molly, his earthy wife.

THEATREclub The Game Ever wonder what we actually mean when we say we have artists in residence? Do you know what a theatre maker or theatre artist is, or even what they do? BEHIND THE SCENES in a new initiative where one day each season we open our doors, put backstage on show and try to explain ourselves, not in a guilty kind of way, but where we explain why we do what we do, what’s important to us and how we work. We’ll start at 1pm and 5pm with two tours allowing access to all areas (dressing rooms, back stage and control room) with our Technical Manager Eoin Fegan. He’ll give an insight into how the arts centre operates. At 6pm we’ll introduce three great theatre makers, Gemma Collins, Grace Dyas and Lauren Larkin. These three are part of a group called THEATREclub. We’ve followed their work for five years and greatly admire their approach, perspective and outlook.Their work is alternate to the mainstream, it is social minded and provocative. It is issue based and they work in a collaborative way with communities, it’s not community engagement, it’s true community involvement. Gemma, Grace and Lauren will present a work in progress of a new piece called The Game. It is a piece of theatre which looks at prostitution and its impact on society and the women involved and the men who buy sex. They’re also looking at the context that leads up to that exchange working with survivors of prostitution and various agencies involved in frontline services. The topic might make you feel this will be depressing or disturbing but it won’t, because their approach is to gently challenge perceptions and beliefs. They will not force any point of view or definitive answers because what they want is for the viewer to be open minded and consider issues – or better – to reconsider and find meaning. Do come along and give us some feedback – your feelings and responses will help them make the work more powerful.
