COUNTY WICKLOW ARTS CENTRE

RESIDENCIES In 2010 Mermaid supported the development of the music ensemble Tarab and the theatre company Wonderland Productions. With county and nationwide tours as Mermaid’s resident ensemble and theatre company, Tarab and Wonderland actively carried the artistic torch for Mermaid across county Wicklow and beyond. Music In 2011, County Wicklow-based musicians, composer Roger Doyle and Congolese guitarist Niwel Tsumbu, join forces for the first time for a yearlong Mermaid residency which will culminate in a number of performances and events throughout the year, each with invited guests. The first performance on Saturday 26 March will see the duo performing alongside Bray percussionist Robbie Harris and saxophonist Michael Buckley. Visual Arts In summer 2010 Mermaid’s gallery space was transformed through the Unbuilding project supported by the Arts Council and Wicklow County Council. The architectural intervention received such considerable attention from the arts sector and general public, that we have decided to retain the structure for a year, presenting a dynamic visual arts programme of exhibitions designed specifically for the space, artist’s talks, reading groups, screenings, research, live events and performances. To assist with the development of such an ambitious visual arts programme, Mermaid’s Director, Nora Hickey and Gallery Manager, Eilis Lavelle are joined on a curatorial panel by invited curators, Cliodhna Shaffrey and Rosie Lynch, artist James Merrigan and County Wicklow Art Officer, Jenny Sherwin.

Long-term couple Nic (Annette Bening) and Jules (Julianne Moore) are the parents of teenagers Joni and Laser, both conceived with the help of an anonymous sperm donor. Before Joni leaves home to start college, her brother persuades her to help him contact their biological father, and so Paul (Mark Ruffalo) enters the family’s life. Crossing the Shannon

FRI 14 Jan @ 8pm

In times past, many fine musicians crossed the Shannon to board the emigrant boat, fuelling the vibrant Irish music scenes in London and Birmingham where John Blake (guitar, flute, bouzouki) and John McEvoy (fiddle) learned their craft. This concert is a musical homecoming, re-crossing the Shannon to explore the wild dance music, slow airs and haunting songs of the West that likewise inspired the artists who complete this group, Muireann Nic Amhlaoidh (vocals) and John Wynne (flute). ‘It’s hard to beat the classic combination of flute and fiddle and no better men than John Wynne and John McEvoy to show us why.’ Hot Press Magazine €16/€14 Conc.

CLUB The Maid

mon 17 Jan @ 8pm

After 23 years of service to the Valdes family, Raquel is comfortably ensconced in a vague existence between maid and her illusion that she is a family member. They hire more help, and, feeling usurped, Raquel begins to sabotage each new employee by resorting to childish antics, clinging to her ambiguous place within the family. In his painful, yet satisfying, comedic drama, Sebastian Silva questions, without bias, a dusty remnant of class division– the common, Latin American, aristocratic tradition of serfdom. The Pipe [15A]

mon 31 Jan @ 8pm

What do people do when the law prevents them from protecting themselves? That’s the question at the heart of The Pipe, a stirring, character-rich documentary from Risteard O Domhnaill about Shell vs. Rossport, Ireland, where the oil company decided to run a gas line, and the community decided otherwise. The recent BP gulf disaster will add currency and urgency to this charismatic David-Goliath tale. The film is beautifully composed and valiantly photographed with a clear point. Shell will move on but the wounds left behind on a small community like Rossport - where neighbour essentially fought neighbour - will take generations to heal, if at all. Mary and Max

Max Jerry Horovitz wants a friend. Mary Daisy Dinkle wants the same. Only problem is, Max lives in New York, while Mary, an eight-year-old girl, lives in Australia. Mary randomly points to a name in the New York City phone book in hopes of gaining an answer to where babies come from in America. So begins the extraordinary correspondence between Mary and Max. Brilliantly animated by Oscar-winning director Adam Elliot and brought to life by the bravura voice work of Toni Collette and Philip Seymour Hoffman, Mary and Max is a bittersweet tale of a friendship between oddballs at their wits’ end with the world, but at peace with each other. Brendan Grace

Sat 19 & Sun 20 Mar @ 8pm

It’s a funny old world when seen through the eyes of Brendan Grace. The greatest family comedian of our generation returns with his latest show that features some brand new material and some ‘old favourites’ from his vast repertoire over the last 38 years in comedy. Brendan’s material owes more to the best of the traditional stand-up-comics than it does to modern alternative humour and his show is very much a show for all the family. There is a sincerity about his act that endears you to him, and his off-stage persona is very much a ‘man of the people’ as he makes himself available after each show for a photo and a ‘meet and greet’. Don’t miss this master of hilarity at work. e30/€28 Conc.

Nevertheless a 3,000 mile trip to the World Cup in South Africa is planned, a journey that - if successful - will take them through seven countries and assorted dangers en route. It’s easy to understand why comparisons have been made with Slumdog Millionaire, in that Africa United has an uplifting story and isn’t afraid of depicting hardship. Dir: Debs Gardner-Paterson 2010. Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest [16]

Mon 28 March @ 8pm

Europe’s most famous punk hacker-cum-avenging angel, Lisbeth Salander, is put on trial in The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, based on the closing installment of the spiky Millennium trilogy by late writer Stieg Larsson. Alfredson weaves several short flashbacks to ‘Fire’ into the opening scenes of ‘Hornet’s Nest’ and immediately picks up where he left off. Because she’s still a possible suspect in a multiple-murder case and a shootout, Lisbeth is confined to her hospital room. But she’s aided from the outside by Millennium journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist), who still believes in her innocence. Like the other two segments, there is a near-constant sense of tension as the trilogy reaches its conclusion. Dir: Daniel Alfredson 2009. €8/€6.50 Conc.

Tues 29 Mar @ 8pm

A parable of the Celtic Tiger, The Quare Land examines motivation, greed and money in a humorous, caustic and incisive way. The Quare Land is set in a house in Cavan where Hugh Pugh is about to take his first bath in four years. His bathing is disturbed by Rob McNulty, a developer wanting to buy a field. Hugh conducts negotiations from his bathtub and the quick fire banter between the two characters escalates into an epic finale as both try to reason each other into submission. Starring Des Keogh and Frank O’Sullivan. ‘The Quare Land will readily remind viewers of John B. Keane. And with its rhythmic use of dialogue, its crudity, its joy in pushing against taboos,’ Irish Theatre Magazine €18/€16 Conc

The Swimming Naked Prophecy

Until Sat 12 Feb

As the legendary investor Warren Buffett said: ‘Only when the tide goes out do you discover who has been swimming naked.’ Buffett’s celebrated metaphorical citation offers a humorous mental image of the serious repercussions of careless speculation, one befitting Ireland’s current economic situation with bank bailouts, disappearing billions and severe fiscal crisis. The Swimming Naked Prophecy is a group exhibition initiated by Mermaid Arts Centre and featuring new work specifically made for the exhibition by twenty five contemporary Irish-based artists. The exhibition offers a range of responses by the invited artists to Ireland’s current social, economic and political circumstances, the recent economic crash and the current mood in Ireland. Artists include: Aideen Barry / Stephen Brandes / Alan Butler / Mark Clare / Felicity Clear / Róisín Coyle / Culturstruction (Jo Anne Butler + Tara Kennedy) / Jennifer Cunningham / Clodagh Emoe / Fiona Hallinan / Seán Hillen / Jesse Jones / John Jones / Vera Klute / Sam Keogh / David Lilburn / Sean Lynch / Brian Maguire / Bea McMahon / Tom Molloy / Teresa Nanigian / Sorcha O’Brien / Dominic Thorpe / Saskia Vermeulen The exhibition will run for 8 weeks in Mermaid Arts Centre before touring to Riverbank Arts Centre, Co.
