WELCOME
At the dawn of 2015 (don’t the years come round so fast) and as we launch our new season we, the Mermaid team, are filled with great anticipation and hope. The new year is a time when we all look back, consider our successes and achievements, think about what we are thankful for and most importantly what we would or could have done better. We carry the lessons of the past with us and look confidently forward secure in the knowledge that we can do anything with the support of our artists, audiences and friends. Mermaid as you can see has a new look, a makeover of sorts, and as we hatch our plans for 2015 we are making a few new year’s resolutions. Mermaid plans to be more open minded and each season in the new year we will have an open day. A day where everyone is invited to come BEHIND THE SCENES where you can meet artists making new work (come along to our first open day in January – page 17). We plan also to be more supportive in continuing to develop MERMAID SPACE our performance residencies in our summer season. With these ambitions in mind, what is most important is we want to be happier and to try to make you feel the same by ensuring we have positive, engaging work which will not only entertain but inspire, thrill and if we’re lucky influence our lives. We are not foolhardy, we know every year presents challenges but we are confident we will at all times keep our audiences and artists at our heart. Solidarity and connectivity is our mantra. Our community, our imagination and our creativity are our secret weapons against adversity. We hope at least one of YOUR new year’s resolutions is to participate, to come and join us and to share with us as often as you can – to put it bluntly – COME SEE US MORE OFTEN! Niamh O’Donnell (Artistic Director) & The Mermaid Team
MERMAID SPACE ///Artists’ residencies Artists and audiences are at the heart of Mermaid Arts Centre. We believe in the importance of self-expression and the importance of making new work in Wicklow. Our residency programme is how we make this happen. We are most interested in work that relates to our everyday lives. Our dance artists in residence (supported by The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and Wicklow County Council Arts Office); Nick Bryson (of Legitimate Bodies), Karen Gleeson and Aisling O’Coineen are already creating new work individually, together and with groups. We are in the throes of planning two workshops on the 9th January (page 9) as well as preparing an exciting night of dance on 14th January 2014 called A Shadow That Leans (page 13), which is presented as part of First Forthnight Festival (a festival challenging mental health prejudice through the creative arts). Over the coming months Aisling, Karen and Nick will also work with students in the Bray Institute of Further Education on pieces to celebrate International Dance Day on 29th April 2015. We are taking to the streets and we plan on surprising you – so keep your eyes peeled and join in!
Mermaid are also pleased to introduce The Company. An ensemble of three theatre makers; Jose Miguel Jimenez, Rob McDermott, and Nyree Yergainharsian. They have been invited to work in Mermaid for a week (with the designer Stephen Dodd) to research and develop a new piece about Nyree’s sister, Sona. Sona is 30, has a full time job, is recently married and is designing her perfect home. She has two dogs and is pregnant. She makes five year plans every five years and they all work out. In 2012 Sona was diagnosed with stage 2A Nodular Sclerosing Hodgkins Lymphoma, a rare cancer of the blood that took active residence in her for almost two years and quietly has her body for the rest of her life. This is what The Company want to consider. Jose, Rob and Nyree are artists who make work about the everyday. They look at how we interact, how we live and learn. In their work they have a great ability to focus on an issue, as well as to focus an audience. In a gentle but clear way they show us the complexity but also realities of situations. They do not give answers but present a layering of issues in a human, thoughtful and sensitive manner. I believe their work speaks of the human condition in a meaningful way. The Company have been making work for over six years and have presented multiple shows in Dublin Theatre Festival, Tiger Dublin Fringe, Project Arts Centre and The Peacock. They have also toured shows to LA, Romania, Portugal, Belgium and Germany and now they come to Mermaid – we are delighted Wicklow will be part of the making of their new piece.

Me, Myself & Mum Charismatic writer, director, and star Guillaume Gallienne recalls his upper-class upbringing and his sexually confused youth in this flamboyant farce. Guillaume has always been a gentle boy preferring flamenco dancing to rugby and consequently from an early age is presumed to be gay by his domineering mother and macho father. This is a charming and at times perverse comedy (with Guilliame also playing the role of his mother in convincing drag) as we revisit some of Guilliame’s formative coming of age experiences. Manuscripts Don’t Burn Director Mohammad Rasoulof’s heartwrenching film was made entirely under the repressive Iranian state’s radar. It was smuggled to Cannes Film Festival in 2013 and the end credits decline to list the names of any of the film’s cast and crew in order to ensure their safety. Based on real events, it tracks two government hit men driving around Tehran, fretting about their children and money problems, and rounding up dissident intellectuals to kill. This is a tense thriller that explores with wisdom and sorrow the best and worst in human nature. A Girl is a Half- formed Thing Hot on the heels of its critically acclaimed run at the Dublin Theatre Festival 2014, Corn Exchange and Mermaid Arts Centre are delighted to present A Girl is a Half-formed Thing. Annie Ryan’s courageous and startling adaptation of Eimear McBride’s award winning novel A Girl is a Half-formed Thing follows the inner narrative of a girl from the womb to 20 with vivid intensity and originality.
