COUNTY WICKLOW ARTS CENTRE

Welcome to Mermaid’s summer season and another great programme of performances, concerts, exhibitions and outdoor events for you to enjoy. This summer we welcome the artist Denis Buckley to Bray for a five-week residency and exhibition in Mermaid’s gallery space. Denis marks the beginning of his residency with a performance on Bloomsday through Bray. During his residency he’ll also be out on the streets and on the seafront in his portable confessional with questions for the people of Bray. Sound intriguing? Watch out for this very engaging artist. We are delighted to partner Bray Summerfest, Ireland’s favourite summer beach festival, for a colourful and festive July with highlights that include the joyous rhythms of Sharon Shannon (in association with Bray Tourism), the frolicking oldtime tunes of The Tennessee Mafia Jug Band and the hot and spicy Gypsy Jazz of Django à la Créole. But it just keeps getting better. In September we bring you an exceptionally strong line-up of theatre shows with the month culminating in an evening with our musicians in residence, legendary Roger Doyle alongside the ubiquitous Niwel Tsumbu. And lastly one to put in your diary without delay – Culture Night on Friday 23 September – an evening of free entertainment to test drive something new. Mermaid teams up Fishamble – The New Play Company, Cois Céim Dance and Crash Ensemble to bring you the best in Irish theatre, dance and music. Here’s to a wonderful summer! Jig! (PG)

Mon 4 Jul @ 8pm

This intriguing and well made documentary offers insights in abundance into the ultra-competitive world of Irish Dancing. The world these people immerse themselves in from such a young age is truly Irish; like GAA, the rewards are never financial but the goal for everyone involved - to compete and excel at the 40th Irish Dancing World Championships in Glasgow. The film chronicles the training, discipline and sacrifice involved with competing at such a high level. Initially looking at two pre-teen girls from different parts of the world - one from America, the other from Derry - it quickly broadens its scope to Irish Dancers in Russia, the UK and Holland. You don’t need to have an interest in Irish Dancing to enjoy a good Jig! Dir: Sue Bourne, 2010 e8/e6.50 Conc.

Oranges and Sunshine is a deeply moving study of emotionally scarred adults who were illegally deported as children to Australia from Britain in the 1940s and 50s. Margaret discovers Charlotte is one of thousands of British youngsters who were unlawfully removed from children’s homes and ‘unfit’ (i.e. unwed) mothers and sent to Australia ‘for their own good’. The heartbreaking stories Margaret hears drive her to bring the shameful secret to the world’s attention in the late 80s. This standout debut by Jim Loach, son of director Ken Loach, makes a strong claim for art-house berths everywhere. Dir: Jim Loach, 2010 e8/e6.50 Conc.

You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger (12A)

Mon 18 & Sat 23 JUL @ 8pm

Woody Allen is in a virulent mood and it suits him. This inspired piece of misanthropy is a dissection of two unhappily married couples; Alfie (Anthony Hopkins) and Helena (Gemma Jones), and their daughter Sally (Naomi Watts) and husband Roy (Josh Brolin). Their passions, ambitions, and anxieties lead them into trouble and out of their minds. Alfie has taken up with a call girl; his wife is drowning her sorrows in psychic malarkey; their daughter, Sally, is smitten with her boss; and her unkempt husband, Roy (Brolin), is tempted by a new alluring neighbour. Why does the film feel so essential? Perhaps because of that tall, dark stranger lurking just outside the frame! Dir: Woody Allen, 2010 €8/€6.50 Conc.

The Tennessee Mafia Jug Band

Fri 22 Jul @ 8pm

From the pastoral hills, hollers, shopping malls and interstate highways of Goodlettsville Tennessee, comes the most entertaining ‘blast from the past’ since Lester Moran and the Cadillac Cowboys. They’re the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band — five guys and a scrubboard with roots like wisdom teeth. This frolicking fivesome brightens up the stage with rib-tickling old time tunes. Even better, they have an utter lack of self-consciousness (and some might say any sense of decorum). The Tennessee Mafia Jug Band not only know the music, they wear the costumes, tell corny jokes and even do slapstick gags that throw their audiences into hysterics. The Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec (12A)

Sat 30 Jul @ 8pm

Luc Besson has taken one of his favourite boyhood stories – a French comic graphic novel by Jacques Tardi – and turned it into a rollicking, mad, incidentfilled film that delights, thrills and charms. The heroine Adele is everybody’s dream of a go-getting female: She’s a journalist, smart, adventurous, quickwitted, no-nonsense and sharp tongued and she makes Indiana Jones look like a lazy wimp. Set at the end of 1911 in a Paris still clinging to the Belle Époque, Adele sets off on a fantastic adventure battling would-be lovers, nutty scientists, pre-historic monsters – helping police solve mysterious murders in Paris, digging in Pharaoh’s tombs and even cursing at awkward camels. Cave of Forgotten Dreams (G)

Werner Herzog has spent a lifetime fascinated by extreme individuals, inhospitable landscapes and what constitutes the essence of the human experience. All these concerns are present in Cave of Forgotten Dreams, a fascinating documentary essay in which Herzog is given unique access to the cave art discovered at Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc in France in 1994. Crystals sparkle and it feels like you could reach out and touch the stalactites or brush your hand across a painting. A contemporary form of artistic expression captures an ancient form of artistic expression and allows the audience to share Herzog’s sense of awe and wonder. Chronicle of a Summer

Sat 27 Aug @ 8PM

Paris. The summer of 1960. While war rages in Algeria and pre-independence Congo seethes with violence, ethnographic filmmaker Jean Rouch and sociologist Edgar Morin send two women out into the streets of the city to interview passersby. From a simple starting question - Are you happy, sir? – Chronicle of a Summer delves deeper and deeper into the lives of its characters. They include Marceline, a Holocaust survivor; Angelo, who works gruelling shifts in a Renault factory; Landry, a student from the Ivory Coast; and Marilou, a young, beautiful and deeply depressed Italian immigrant. As the film progresses, the light opening scenes give way to intimate revelations and hotly contested political arguments. Talking to survivors and making wonderful use of both archival footage and reconstruction, Congo – An Irish Affair pieces together the story of people asked to achieve an impossible goal. It is a searing indictment of the UN and of European attitudes to Africa but equally shows the hopelessness of the situation as armed factions with mutually exclusive desires slip ever closer to war. Congo – An Irish Affair is a positively charged, historical documentary and is a tragic yet timely reminder that the overused epithet ‘Never Again’ is destined to make liars of us all. Mammuth

Serge (Gérard Depardieu) is an abattoir worker who retires only to find that he doesn’t have a pension and needs to track down paperwork from his former employers. Hitting the road on his Mammuth bike, he has a series of variously humiliating and inspiring encounters. There are reunions, eerie appearances and outrageous gags but above all, the screen is filled - and then some - by Depardieu, casting vanity, long hair and often clothes to the winds. Reconnecting with the spirit of Bertrand Blier’s Les Valseuses, Depardieu clearly hits it off a treat with the directors, whose anarchic cheek and upyours radicalism are, despite a new-found lyricism, here in full force. Some will come to this film full of knowledge of Bausch. For others, it will be as fresh and novel as Wenders’ approach of turning dance into cinema. Both will find it entrancing and truly inspiring. This mysterious, submersive and captivating film is a tribute to German dance pioneer Pina Bausch, who died in 2009. There is a magical quality as solo dancers or pairs of dancers perform pieces to express their memories of Bausch. There is little of Bausch herself apart from a few cleverly inserted snippets of footage of her dancing or sitting behind her desk in the rehearsal room. But we do get performances including ‘Le Sacre du Printemps’, ‘Kontakthof’ and ‘Café Muller’. Dir: Wim Wenders, 2011 €8/€6.50 Conc. Duration: 103 mins

CLUB Life, Above All

Mon 26 Sep @ 8pm

A commanding performance from screen newcomer Khomotso Manyaka lights up Life, Above All, a moving adaptation of Allan Stratton’s bestselling 2004 novel Chanda’s Secrets. A classic coming of age story is given added dramatic weight by placing it in a South Africa where so many children are obliged to assume adult responsibilities as the AIDS pandemic leaves hundreds of thousands of orphans in its wake. Chanda is twelve and innocent. She lives in the small township near Johannesburg. It appears to be a supportive, tight-knit community where people look out for each other. Following the death of her newly born baby sister, Chanda must figure out that her township is really a place where maintaining the appearance of happy normality is more important than acknowledging the truth of a disease that is rife in the country. A Knowable Whole Jennifer Brady

Thu 28 Jul - Thu 1 Sept

A Knowable Whole is an exhibition of new video work and photographs by artist Jennifer Brady and is accompanied by a screening of the seminal film Chronicle of a Summer by Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin, (1961) on Saturday 27 August at 8pm. Brady develops her ongoing investigation into the figure of truth within the documentary form with her new video work 119 Howth Road. The work focuses on the failed development of a luxury apartment complex in Dublin in recent years. This site and its history is used as a departure point from which to explore notions of illusion in relation to financial speculation, filmic construction and documentary filmmaking practices. Jennifer Brady lives and works in Dublin. Having completed an M.A in Visual Arts Practices at IADT (First Class Honors) in 2010, she is currently working on a commission for Mayo County Council’s Landmark public art programme and was recently awarded an Arts Council Visual Arts Bursary Award. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally, most recently in 126 artist-run gallery, Galway, The LAB, Dublin and Draiocht, Blanchardstown. Julie Merriman & Marcel Broodthaers

Thu 8 Sept - Thu 1 Nov

This exhibition brings together drawings by the Irish artist Julie Merriman and an installation by Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers (1924-76). Julie Merriman’s work is centred in her exploration of drawing as a form of communication. Working from archival material she investigates the drawing of specialist fields including historic and contemporary architecture, engineering, science, cartography and mathematics to understand how drawing works as a technology to impart specific information. Marcel Broodthaers’ slide projection Bateau Tableau, (1973) is based on the anonymous 19th century painting bought by Broodthaers in a curiosity shop. Using a camera, the artist subjected the painting to a teasing analysis, shifting the focus from details to the overall image, mirroring the viewer’s own act of perception while looking at a work of art. Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976) was a Belgian poet, photographer, filmmaker and influential conceptual artist. His work is included in many museum collections around the world including Tate, London and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Julie Merriman (b. 1963) graduated with an MA in Visual Art Practices from IADT in 2009. Merriman has participated in numerous exhibitions, residencies and symposiums in Ireland and the UK.
