WELCOME “In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” Albert Camus 2018 is belting along. This is my favourite time of year, not only do I feel a lift in my spirits I also get out to walk Brays promenade each morning. Walking helps me think about things that are not just about the day to day trenches of life. This morning on my, not so brisk walk, I considered a didactic parable-ish story told by David Foster Wallace (Author). The story goes, two young fish swimming along together are passed by an older fish going in the opposite direction – he says as he passed ‘morning boys, how’s the water?’ the two-young fish smiled and kept swimming, 5 minutes later one turned and asked, ‘What’s Water?’. The point is merely that sometimes our most obvious and important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about. When I was growing up I never realised just how repetitive, mundane and at times tedious the day in day out of adult life can be. Although what this kind of living can give us is the realisation that the value of living and learning has less to do with knowledge but more to do with awareness. Awareness of the importance of people and things that are around us all the time. To quote Simone Weil (Philosopher), ‘attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.’ I believe in our souls. Not souls in a religious way, as I’m a non-believer. Not soul as a pop-culture commodity either. I mean soul simply as shorthand for the core of us from which our beliefs, values and our actions radiate. I don’t believe in atheism – everyone worships. Some worship money and things (most feel they will never have enough) some worship beauty (most I suspect feel ugly) some worship intellect (and don’t feel good enough). Our culture promotes these beliefs with the promise of rewards of wealth, comfort and personal freedom. But there are lots of different kinds of freedom – for me the most precious is freedom of thought, attention and awareness. These freedoms mean we can truly care about other people in a myriad of non-sexy, mundane ways. This is the only alternate I know to the rat race. Singer and poet Patti Smith wrote ‘seek out what magnifies your spirit’, it’s a beautiful phrase and a beautiful notion. In your life who are the people, ideas, and books that magnify your spirit? I suggest you find, hold and visit them often. Perhaps you will find some in our Summer Season and visit us? Niamh O’Donnell & The Mermaid Team.

MERMAID SPACE Artists and audiences are at the heart of Mermaid Arts Centre. We believe in the importance of artists making work in Wicklow and our residency programme is how we make this happen. We are most interested in work that relates or is relevant to our audience’s everyday lives. Last year Mermaid Arts Centre started a new relationship with artist Nickie Hayden. Nickie applied to Arts & Disability Ireland and was awarded an Arts and Disability Connect Award (funded by The Arts Council). This scheme offers artists the opportunity to connect with other practitioners or venues to make a change in their practice in terms of scope and scale by engaging in mentoring or training. I supported Nickie as she began to expand her practice to incorporate working collaboratively with people who have invisible disabilities through the Dyslexia Association of Ireland. Reflecting on personal experiences of pain, abuse, bereavement and a lifelong struggle with literacy, Nickie has always recognised the role painting has played in expressing her emotions. However, for the past year she has taken part in a programme for Adult Dyslexics, and found the intense experience of working through language particularly cathartic. Nickie brought together paintings, sculptures and written word as well as participatory elements in the making of a new body of work. In this work Nickie explored the everyday difficulties and historic traumas experienced by people who have been affected by dyslexia and the trauma caused by abuses of power. The exhibition Settling the Past was a huge success and ran in The Lab, Dublin from 20th January to 4th March, 2018.

MERMAID SPACE Zoe Riordan is a theatre writer, director and musician. She’s an artist who is probably best described as a cross disciplinary practitioner /maker as her talents are expansive. She first came to my attention when she was part of Rough Magic Theatre Company’s Seeds Programme in 2014 and since I’ve watched her repertoire and reputation grow. My favourites of her work are The Well Rested Terrorist (Peacock Theatre, Tiger Dublin Fringe Festival 2014) and Recovery, which premiered in LIVE COLLISION International Festival at Project Arts Centre in 2017. I greatly admire Zoe as her creative motivation is truly honest and deeply felt. In June, Zoe will be in Mermaid to experiment and play on a new work, a one women show, called Everything I Do. Composer and performer Caimin Gilmore will make and rehearse new works in Mermaid. Caimin is a songwriter for Sun Collective. As a Double Bassist, he plays regularly with Crash Ensemble, the RTE Concert Orchestra, Lisa Hannigan, and was recently awarded the Arts Council of Ireland Emerging Artists Bursary. Caimin will be in Mermaid to rehearse for three days in August with Sun Collective before embarking on an Irish Tour with their recently released debut album; the band includes Dan Bodwell on double bass, Dominic Mullan on drums, Shane Sugrue and Kevin Corcoran on pianos and vocals, Kate Ellis on cello, Una O’Kane on violin and Lisa Dowdall on viola. We also hope to present them in our autumn season so watch our web-site for further details.

MERMAID SPACE AND last but most definitely not least we have Eoghan Carrick a freelance director, lighting designer and dramaturg. Eoghan has been Associate Director with Corn Exchange Theatre Company since 2015 and recently directed: Nora (Dublin Theatre Festival, 2017), This Lime Tree Bower (Project Arts Centre/Irish Tour, 2016) and The Boyz of Harcourt Street (Smock Alley Theatre, 2016). We have Eoghan working in Mermaid because I am a fan of his work and his outlook. I believe Eoghan has an innate and rare ability to bring and to make clear his vision, his own personal view of each play and story he directs. Eoghan is working with collaborators Nessa Mathews (Actor and Writer) Molly O’Cathain (Set and Costume Designer) and Dylan Tonge Jones (Musician, Composer and Actor). They’re making a new work called Infinity. Stardate: 2077.55. A lone astronaut will journey through the cosmos on a one way mission to a signal of unknown origin. Leaving behind a dying earth, she must traverse time and space, isolation and uncertainty, in her quest to find hope and new life. This will be a highly theatrical and design rich show that mixes science fiction and documentary material. Through its exploration of fact, fiction and the spaces in between, it will investigate issues of mental health, the stories we tell and the stories behind them.

In June and July the Theatre Lovett team will be in our theatre space developing FRNKNSTN, A modern mutation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Written by Michael West and directed by Muireann Ahern, this daring adaptation of Shelley’s classic re-imagines Victor Frankenstein as a gene-splicing molecular biologist who creates human life from his own DNA with catastrophic results. Actor Louis Lovett will play both man and monster. Meet The Creature During this time, Theatre Lovett will be inviting some young people into the theatre. Working around the theme of Frankenstein, creation and one-person performance these workshops will offer a fascinating insight into the development stages of a theatre production. FIONA KELLY
Opening THURSDAY 19 July | 6pm Free | Exhibition runs FRIDAY 20 July − SATURDAY 18 August | 10am − 6pm Fiona Kelly’s current practice is driven by a contemplation of what has been lost and the transience of things. Her visual outputs have been informed by the common material - dust. She uses dust both materially and theoretically, as a means to explore mans’ interaction with the built environment and the Natural world. Akin to the architectural movement of Bricolage, where the Bricoleur rebuilds using the debris of previous events; Kelly has foraged and utilised materials in a state of rejection to construct fables for the present. Fiona Kelly holds a MA from the Crawford College of Art & Design and was awarded a 1:1 for her research thesis and accompanying exhibition The Distillation of Dust (2015). Her work has been exhibited in Ireland and internationally, most recently in The Great Heap, (Solo) The Luan Gallery & Leitrim Sculpture Centre; Sustainable Futures, Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh; The Dispersed Gallery, Middlesbrough, U.K; Geological Cake,The Burren College of Art & 126 Galway; I Went to the Woods, GLUCKSMAN, Cork; There are Thousands of Taps Dripping, (Solo) Ratamo Galleria, Jyväskylä, Finland. www.fionakelly.co 12
